Hello, hi! I’m Yuan Hehe, please follow me, more exciting content awaits you. Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold 2 leaks
Less than a year after Samsung released its first tri-fold smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, news about the second generation has already emerged. Recently, leakers revealed that Samsung is developing the Galaxy Z TriFold 2, which may launch in 2027, or even earlier.
What surprises me is the price. The starting price for the first-generation Galaxy Z TriFold in China was as high as 19,999 yuan, and according to current leaks, the second generation may still maintain a similar price point. If this is indeed the case, Samsung clearly has no intention of bringing tri-fold screens to the mass market so soon.
As for the upgrade direction, there are currently three main ones: thinner, lighter, and more durable. The first-generation TriFold weighs 309 grams and has a thickness of 12.9 mm when folded. Although it provides a large 10-inch screen when unfolded, its weight is hard to ignore for daily carry. If Samsung can significantly reduce the weight of the device, I think it would be more attractive than simply improving performance.
However, what I truly care about is durability. A tri-fold screen requires two sets of hinges working in tandem, making its internal structure far more complex than that of a standard foldable. As the device continues to get thinner, whether the hinge strength and the reliability of the flexible screen can still be guaranteed is the real problem Samsung needs to solve. Current leaks have not provided any specific improvement plans.
In addition to the TriFold 2, Samsung is also reportedly working on a rollable screen phone. Samsung has showcased similar rollable screen concepts multiple times over the past few years, but there are clearly still many issues to be resolved before they can be mass-produced and hit the market.
Currently, Samsung has not yet confirmed the launch plans for these two new devices. However, if the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 really continues to be priced at nearly 20,000 yuan, I think simply making it thinner and lighter is not enough. After all, at this price point, what consumers care about most is probably whether it can truly replace both a phone and a tablet, rather than just offering another folding method.
How will the tri-fold screen phone perform?
When mentioning tri-fold screens, the Huawei Mate XT is definitely unavoidable. In 2024, Huawei took the lead in launching the world’s first commercial tri-fold screen phone, more than a year ahead of Samsung. Yet, after Samsung finally brought out the Galaxy Z TriFold, it announced the discontinuation of sales just about three months after its launch. Now, with news of a second generation emerging, it is somewhat surprising.
Actually, the first-generation TriFold never seemed intended for mass-market sales from the very beginning. Samsung adopted a limited supply model, primarily to showcase the extent of their capabilities in developing a tri-fold screen. However, once true mass production begins, the complex hinge, flexible screen, and high manufacturing costs are all unavoidable challenges.
Especially with the current rise in component prices, it will likely be difficult for the second generation to continue controlling costs. Whether Samsung will continue with limited sales or attempt to scale up production remains uncertain for now. Nevertheless, if the price remains high, the TriFold 2 will probably still be a product targeted at a niche consumer base.
The first-generation Galaxy Z TriFold features a large 10-inch screen when unfolded, and a 6.5-inch outer screen when folded. Switching from a phone to a near-tablet display space is indeed very appealing, especially for users who frequently handle documents and multitask with multiple apps.
But I think what Samsung needs to prove most right now is not whether a tri-fold screen can be made, but whether this form factor can truly become a phone suitable for long-term use. The first generation has already demonstrated the technology; the second generation should definitely bring something different to the actual user experience.
