2022 marks a decade since Microsoft released its first Surface hardware. The first-generation computer was a tablet that ran streamlined software known as Windows RT, but did little to convince people to give up their traditional laptops.

But since then, the Surface line has skyrocketed. The original Surface evolved into the Surface Pro, with the addition of the affordable Surface Go replacement - both with keyboard covers.

Microsoft also makes regular laptops, including the thin and light Surface Laptop and a cheaper alternative in the Surface Laptop Go. But the detachable Surface Book has now been retired and replaced by the Surface Laptop Studio, a true 3-in-1. If you're using a Microsoft computer, you've come to the right place.

1. Surface Pro 9 - the best 2-in-1

The Surface Pro 9 scores lower than many of the other computers in this article, but that's due to the drawbacks of the ARM-based model. Most people should opt for the Intel version, which is a much better versatile.

Its attractive design and great display aren't an upgrade from Surface Pro 8, but they're still the best you'll find on any tablet - even without OLED. you can also expect a video calling experience, although the ARM version doesn't have the extra features available.

The battery life of this model is extremely long, but the performance drop is not worth it for most people. The 12th generation Intel processors guarantee stable performance levels and you can avoid any application compatibility issues with ARM.

However, it's still not perfect. Having only two USB-C ports is not enough. But for most people, this is the best 2-in-1 you can buy. For that reason, it deserves to be at the top of the list in this article.

2. Surface Laptop 5 - the best laptop

The Surface Laptop is no longer the breakthrough laptop it once was, but it's still a great option - provided you're happy with your Intel processor.

Microsoft has dropped the AMD option on the 13.5-inch and 15-inch models, and it gets expensive once you get beyond the cheapest configuration.

But if you're willing to spend the big bucks, this is a great option. Microsoft's signature thin and light body, one of the best keyboards in the industry and now very easy to use Windows 11 software are all available.

However, you will have to deal with this outdated design, which has not been updated since the debut of the Surface Laptop. For most people, it is still the best Microsoft laptop, but other companies in the Windows space offer more.

3. Surface Go 3 - the best budget 2-in-1

Surface Go 3 is one of Microsoft's more cautious 2021 updates, but it does get a useful performance boost. Despite being a 10th generation chip, the new Intel Core i3 processors make everyday use much smoother and more reliable.

Other than that, this is basically the Go 2 of 2020. the 10.5-inch LCD display remains a highlight, though the refresh rate remains at 60Hz. the rather thick bezel means it's starting to look dated, while the battery life is impressive.

However, it does retain premium build quality and has an excellent built-in stand. the combination of a 1080p webcam and dual microphones also delivers a great video calling experience.

Combining an i3 model with a Type Cover and mouse makes the complete Go 3 experience relatively expensive. the performance of the Pentium Gold is still an unknown quantity, but that's where you'll find value for money.

Either way, it's still a powerful but ultra-portable Windows tablet that runs a full version of Windows 11 right out of the box.

4. Surface Laptop Studio - best for advanced users

Microsoft took a risk by abandoning the popular Surface Book design for a very different form factor, but the Surface Laptop Studio gets a lot of things right.

The gorgeous 120Hz display sits inside some slim bezels, but there's still room for a great webcam and an infrared sensor for Windows Hello face unlock.

The screen's refresh rate is adaptive, which means it can be dynamically adjusted to help extend excellent battery life. On more expensive models, you can also get consistent performance from 11th generation Intel chips and RTX 3050 Ti GPUs.

But whether you buy this laptop will come down to the 3-in-1 feature. The device works just as well as a traditional laptop, with the display pulled forward or laid flat, but that's your only option.

Many people may prefer a convertible laptop or tablet with a detachable keyboard, especially given the high asking price and limited port options of the Laptop Studio. But in some creative industries or work scenarios, this design really can't be beat.

5. Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 - Best Budget Laptop

The second-generation Surface Laptop Go 2 is a modest upgrade from the first generation, but that makes a big difference to the overall experience. The 12.4-inch screen is too small for most people.

But that means the Laptop Go 2 is a strikingly compact computer that weighs just 1.16 kilograms. Aside from the lack of backlighting, the keyboard is great, especially when used in conjunction with the reliable fingerprint sensor built into the power button.

However, the Laptop Go 2 tends to overheat and charges slower than many of its competitors. If you can get beyond those things, it's certainly worth considering.

6. Surface Pro 8 - the best value for money

The Surface Pro 8 is no longer the latest model, but it's still a great 2-in-1 that's often on sale.

Microsoft has finally updated the design here, with a 13-inch display almost identical to the previous 12.3-inch device. The screen itself is now 120Hz, which means a great viewing experience with an ultra-smooth refresh rate.

The performance of the 11th generation Intel chips is impressive, while both cameras are sturdy and the speakers are excellent. However, the lack of ports means you may need to connect adapters or hubs.

Also worth mentioning are the accessories that turn the Pro 8 into a replacement for many laptops. the Signature Keyboard and Slim Pen 2 stylus are the best ever, but also quite expensive.

Given the continued limitations of Windows 11 as a pure tablet, you'll need to pay extra for accessories. But since the Pro 8 itself is already much more expensive than its predecessor, this isn't something everyone can justify.

7. Surface Laptop 4 - still a great laptop

The Surface Laptop 4 is a minor upgrade from its predecessor, but there are still some reasons to buy it over the Surface Laptop 3.

The most important thing here is the processor - you can now choose between Intel's latest and powerful AMD Ryzen chips in both 13.5-inch and 15-inch models. These chips have significantly improved power efficiency and display - battery life is very stable, even when playing 4K video.

Many of the reasons why Laptop 3 is so great still apply. These displays offer an engaging viewing experience with continued support for touch and pen input. There's also a sturdy keyboard and a lightweight, premium design.

However, it's not perfect. This tried-and-true design can be refreshed, and the noisy fan will kick in often during daily use. It can also become expensive, especially if you need it.

However, if you're using Microsoft hardware, the Laptop 4 now offers the best pure laptop experience. However, with the introduction of Surface Laptop 5, that could change soon.

8. Surface Book 3 - the most versatile computer

While the Book 3 is only a minimal upgrade from its predecessor, it's a solid final iteration of this unique form factor - the Surface Laptop Studio has now replaced it in Microsoft's lineup.

A gorgeous display, great keyboard and reliable port options set the stage for a great laptop experience.

However, performance is severely uneven. book 3 copes well in most situations, but is a serious disappointment when it comes to gaming performance.

This isn't usually a big deal, but Microsoft has specifically touted its suitability for gaming. That's far from the only drawback, the most prominent being the thick bezels, mediocre speakers and lack of a fingerprint scanner.

If a fully detachable laptop screen appeals to you, then this is the one for you. It works well with Windows 11 and remains relatively future-proof.

9. Surface Laptop Go - still a great PC

The strength of its successor means the original Surface Laptop Go isn't a product we'd recommend to most people. However, you'll need to pay much more than the starting price for a model worth buying. Battery life is also an issue, with the device struggling to complete a full workday on a single charge.

Despite this, there's a lot to like about the Surface Laptop Go. The Dolby Audio speakers and dual studio microphones also deliver a great audio experience.

However, there are many laptops that also perform well in these areas, but many of them are more affordable or offer a better all-around experience.
