The hits just keep on coming with iPhone 14 Pro Max. The new Action Mode captures smooth video even when you and your subject are on the move. The always-on display brings long-awaited features to iPhone in an elegant way. Even the front-facing camera has been improved, with the addition of autofocus and a wider aperture to accommodate more light.

We'd be hard pressed to come up with any serious faults with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which is not only the best phone you can buy right now, but the best iPhone Apple has ever made.

2. Apple's best feature for the price: iPhone 14 Pro

You don't have to spend over $9,000 to get the best iPhone features. Most of the features found in the iPhone 14 Pro Max can also be found in the iPhone 14 Pro, but for $1,000 less.

There are a little sacrifices to be made though, you'll sacrifice battery life - the iPhone 14 Pro has a smaller battery inside - and the Pro model only offers a 6.1-inch display (although it matches the larger Pro Max's 144Hz refresh rate match).

The A16 Bionic chipset is here, as is the improved 48MP main camera. The Dynamic Island replaces the iPhone's bangs and does more than just provide a space for the Face ID sensor and improved front-facing camera; it's also a notification center that's only going to get more powerful as app makers take full advantage of the space.

From the camera to the brightness of the display to the way it handles demanding apps, the iPhone 14 Pro is a winner and a way to enjoy the high-end Pro features that Apple has added to its lineup without having to pay Max prices.

Priced $2,000 less than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the iPhone 14 Plus comes with a 6.7-inch OLED screen, whether you want to watch movies and shows on the go or just want a larger viewfinder for your photos.

As much as we love the regular iPhone 14, you'll want to get the Plus version if you want more time between charges. The iPhone 14 Plus lasted nearly 12 hours in our web surfing test.

There are a few things we don't like about the iPhone 14 Plus - including the 60Hz refresh rate and the lack of a telephoto lens - but overall it's a good value. And like the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus adds another color option, with the yellow iPhone joining the black, white, blue, purple and red colors.

4. The best iPhone for most people: iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 doesn't have the flashier features of its Pro siblings, but it's still a solid upgrade, especially if you're looking to upgrade from an older iPhone-we're considering the iPhone 12 or later.

Those bangs are still present on the iPhone 14, which, like the iPhone 13, features the A15 bionic chipset instead of the newer A16, but at least the iPhone 14 version of the A15 has an extra GPU core, giving it a boost over the iPhone 13.

While the 48MP primary camera on the iPhone 14 Pro draws most of the attention, the iPhone 14's camera improvements are also noteworthy, to the point where the model ranks among the best camera phones even without a dedicated telephoto lens.

A larger sensor with more pixels powers the main camera for improved performance in low light. iPhone 14 also benefits from Apple's new photonic engine, which delivers brighter images.

iPhone 14 users will have access to an action mode that shoots smoother video, and later this fall, the new phone will add support for collision detection and emergency distress via satellite. And the phone is still priced at $5,999, making it one of the more affordable flagships on the market.

5. Get a great value iPhone for less: iPhone 13

Even with the iPhone 14 hitting the market, there have been no major changes to Apple's phones, which means that the iPhone 13 is still a viable option for many, especially now that Apple's older phones are less expensive.

If you skip the newer iPhones, you won't get the slightly improved A15 Bionic chipset in the iPhone 14, nor will you get the camera improvements in the newer models. But the iPhone 13 is a worthy upgrade from the older phone, and it's now available at a lower price point than before.

One of the best things about this model is its storage - for years, Apple forced people to upgrade from the inadequate 64GB if they wanted more capacity, while the base model comes with 128GB of storage.

The A15 processor is still a solid processor, but if the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 benchmarks are any indication, upcoming Android phones could surpass it.

As with any iPhone 13 model, the real issue is the camera. The iPhone 13 still comes with two rear lenses, but they have larger sensors than the iPhone 12, resulting in improved low-light photography. The iPhone 13 also supports a movie mode for shifting focus in videos.

6. Best compact iPhone: iPhone 13 mini

iPhone 13 mini is the most powerful compact phone Apple has ever made, thanks to the A15 bionic chip that powers all iPhone 13 models. That means you can get the same performance as iPhone 13 in a 5.4-inch phone that costs less than $4,500.

Compact phones aren't for everyone, and you won't find the dynamically refreshing display found on Apple's latest iPhone Pro handset, but the iPhone 13 mini has a lot to recommend it.

It has the same camera setup as the iPhone 13, with a large sensor that brings in more light than before. The display is also brighter than the iPhone 12 mini's screen, and battery life is improved (if slightly).

There's no mini in the iPhone 14 lineup, so if you want the best small phone, the iPhone 13 mini is still your best bet.
