Apple MacBook Air (M2): Best Laptop Overall

The M1 MacBook Air was indeed a great laptop, but the new generation M2 version is even better. It features a new chassis design that differs from the iconic wedge-shaped look of the old model and becomes even more beautiful.

The screen is also bigger, boasting a 13.6-inch display area with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and the webcam has come a long way, moving from the grainy image quality of the M1's 720p camera to a 1080p HD resolution.

What really sets this new MacBook Air apart, however, is the M2 processor it comes with. This chip is not only faster, but also more efficient, resulting in longer battery life.

The MacBook Air (M2) performed well in our video playback tests, achieving up to 17 hours of battery life, which, as our reviewer noted, puts the vast majority of Windows laptops out of reach.

The only caveat, of course, is that it is slightly more expensive compared to its predecessor, which may put some people off. Other than that, however, it's a very pleasant experience and clearly the best laptop in its class.

Acer Swift 3: The best choice for a budget thin and light laptop

If you're looking for a thin and light laptop with a great screen and long-lasting battery at an affordable price, then the new Acer Swift 3 is definitely for you.

With a beautifully crafted aluminum chassis and weighing only 1.2 kg, it's so light and portable that it can easily fit into even the smallest backpack. Its 14-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 resolution screen is not only bright but also crisp and colorful.

Acer hasn't skimped on the internal specs either. While the Swift 3 uses an 11th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, which may not be the latest model, it's powerful enough to handle a wide range of tasks; there's also a generous 8GB of RAM and a fairly fast 512GB of SSD storage.

When it comes to connectivity, this laptop won't disappoint you either, coming with 2 USB-A, 1 Thunderbolt 4 USB-C, and 1 HDMI 2.1 port. The keyboard also comes with a nice backlighting feature for easy use in dimly lit environments. It also comes with a fingerprint reader for added biometric security to your device.

The Swift 3 is a remarkable thin and light laptop at an affordable price with its excellent battery life performance coupled with fast charging capabilities. The only point to note is that its RAM is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

Honor MagicBook 15: Best Cheap Laptops

Extra inches of display sometimes means a higher price, but the Honor MagicBook 15 bucks the trend by offering a large 15.6-inch display at a fraction of the cost of its competitors.

Thanks to the Honor MagicBook 15's 8GB of RAM and efficient AMD Ryzen 5 processor, everyday tasks can be handled with ease. It's a bit disappointing that there's no expandable model with faster processing speeds and more storage space, although the 512GB SSD is quite a bargain for the price you're paying here.

It's not the absolute fastest laptop on this list, but if you're looking for an efficient machine that can handle your day-to-day life without spending too much money, the Honor MagicBook 15 is for you. It scored brilliantly in our internal CPU, battery life, and color accuracy tests, which means it can also be a budget option for creative work.

The Honor MagicBook 15's design is also worthy of praise. The keyboard's 1.3mm drive point means typing is satisfying and quiet, while the sleek metal body with a matte finish seems much more elegant than the price suggests.

To connect peripherals, you get two USB-A ports (one 2.0 and one 3.2 Gen 1), a USB-C socket, 3.5mm headphone jack, and an HDMI out port. If you ask me, this is a solid option for those on a budget.

Huawei MateBook 16s: the best 16-inch laptops

Huawei's 2022 update to the Huawei MateBook 16 brings some interesting new features, notably the Core i7 and Core i9 versions of the 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs and an intelligent 1080p webcam.

The performance of the new 14-core Intel chips is very impressive, with the Huawei MateBook 16s scoring 366 in our 4K multimedia benchmarks, triple the score of the 11th-generation Core i7 processor.

The most important feature of the Huawei MateBook 16s is undoubtedly its 3:2 ratio 2,520 x 1,680 189dpi touchscreen glossy display.

It's bright, sharp, vivid, and color-accurate - everything a great laptop display should be. It refreshes at just 60Hz, but that's not the same as the panel on the MateBook 14s, which refreshes at 90Hz.

The webcam has a virtual background feature as well as a feature called "FollowCam" that allows you to keep your head in the center of the screen. With a great keyboard, Intel Evo certification and decent battery life, there's a lot to like about the Huawei MateBook 16s.

Huawei MateBook 14s: the best value premium ultraportable laptop

Huawei has always been committed to producing high-quality, high-value compact laptops, but this time it's outdone itself. The Huawei MateBook 14s is well-made, performs well, and, most importantly, Huawei has finally removed the webcam from the keyboard and placed it in a more logical spot at the top of the display.

Not only that, the display has been upgraded to 90Hz, and with the Intel Core i7-11370H CPU, it's a strong competitor to the M1 Apple MacBook Air.

For the price, the Huawei MateBook 14s with 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM is an excellent laptop.

Microsoft Surface Pro 9: The Best Windows 2-in-1 Laptop

The Surface Pro 9 is a major upgrade from the Surface Pro 8, and it offers new and improved CPU options, with Microsoft giving users a choice between the 12th Gen U-series Intel Core i5, Core i7, or Microsoft SQ3 chips.

This internal upgrade makes the Surface Pro 9 a worthy successor to the already stellar Surface Pro 8 and the new champion of Windows 2-in-1 laptops.

When I tested it, the screen was excellent, with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, crisp 2,880 x 1,920 resolution, and good gamut coverage and color accuracy.

I recommend getting the Surface Pro Signature Edition Keyboard (sold separately): it provides an excellent typing experience while being less obtrusive, and is the perfect keyboard cover to pair with the Surface Pro 9.

Elsewhere, the quality of the webcam and microphone is impressive, perfect for anyone looking to do a lot of video conferencing, and the laptop is thin (879 grams) and attractive, thanks in large part to the slim black bezel and simple matte aluminum rear panel.

Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch (M1 Pro): Big Battery Life

Apple's M1 processor keeps getting stronger in the 2021 MacBook Pro line of laptops, and the 16-inch is simply the best all-around portable I've ever reviewed.

It comes with a blazing-fast Apple M1 Pro processor, 16GB to 64GB of RAM, and SSDs from 512GB to 8TB.

However, its 16.2-inch, 120Hz ProMotion mini-LED display was the real star of the show. With a peak brightness of 1,600cd/m², black response levels almost as good as an OLED screen, and a wide range of professional-grade color calibrations to choose from, it's the best screen we've seen on a laptop.

Not only that, but Apple also brought back the HDMI port and SD card slot in this version, and removed the Touch Bar, replacing it with a full-sized row of function keys and a lovely big Escape key.

But the expensive starting price means that this powerful product is not for everyone. However, if you're a creative professional who needs great computing power on the move, then there's no better laptop than this.

Dell XPS 17: Best Laptops with Big Screens

If you value the extra stretch or keyboard space of a super king-sized display, then the Dell XPS 17 is the laptop for you, as it can accommodate a spacious 17-inch 16:10 laptop display in a form factor that's barely larger or heavier than many 15.6- and 16.1-inch laptops.

The InfinityEdge display occupies the footprint of the XPS 17's impressive 93%, making this trick possible and visually compelling. At 2.3 kilograms, the XPS 17 isn't as ultra-light as the 1.35-kg LG gram 17, but it's still very portable.

You can buy the XPS 17 with a Full HD display, but what you really want is the 3,840 x 2,400 touchscreen model because it's bright, colorful, color-accurate, and has a higher pixel density than the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

As usual with Dell, you can choose from various levels of RAM from 16GB to 64GB and storage from 512GB to 2TB, but you can easily upgrade the RAM and add a second SSD after purchase.

While the latest XPS 17 is no different from the already sleek 2021 model from the outside, the new Alder Lake Core i7 and Core i9 processors inside make a world of difference in performance thanks to the Nvidia RTX 3050 or RTX 3060 GPUs cranked down to a lower 60W TGP) the XPS 17 excels.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4: Fast, ultra-portable and beautifully designed

The latest Surface Laptop isn't going to win any innovation awards - it's essentially the same laptop as its predecessor with updated internals - but it's still a great laptop that pushes the boundaries of our favorite laptop, the M1 MacBook Air, in many ways.

In fact, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 beats Apple's offering in terms of its display and its results in my 4K media benchmarks.

Available in a variety of configurations with AMD and Intel processors, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is beautifully designed and functional. It's lightweight, the keyboard has three levels of backlighting and is a pleasure to type on, and the trackpad is great.

The 13.5-inch touchscreen covers more than 95% of the sRGB color gamut with excellent accuracy, the 3:2 aspect ratio is more practical than most competitors, and the display is bright enough to be used in most lighting conditions.

Battery life lags behind many of the others on this list, and graphics performance isn't as good as it could be, but as a day-to-day work machine, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is a very attractive option.
