Foldable phones are all the rage. 2023 has seen a slew of foldable phones released in the consumer space, and in the meantime, foldable phones are breaking new ground in terms of price and form factor. That's great, because it means there will be more competition, more designs, and more ideas that push the boundaries. In short, if you're curious, now is a great time to delve into foldable devices.
So I thought it was time to list your options and tell you which ones are good. If you are interested in buying a folding phone, then you have come to the right place.
1. Huawei Mate X5
Starting from the front, the Huawei Mate X5 comes with a 6.4-inch OLED LTPO external display with a resolution of 2504 x 1080 pixels, an aspect ratio of 20.9:9, a whopping 300Hz touch sampling rate, and made of Kunlun glass.
On the inside, the phone features a 7.85-inch foldable OLED LTPO display with a resolution of 2496 x 2224 pixels, an aspect ratio of 8:7.1, and a touch sampling rate of up to 240 Hz. both screens also support a refresh rate of 1 Hz-120 Hz, 10-bit color, P3 color gamut, and 1440 Hz high-frequency dimming. For security, it has a side fingerprint scanner.
There is no information about the chipset powering the Huawei Mate X5. It also appears to be powered by the Kirin 9000s, a chip also present inside Huawei's Mate 60 series of phones. It's also unclear if the phone supports 5G connectivity. It comes with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.
The Huawei Mate X5 has an 8 MP pixel camera on the front. Its rear camera setup includes a 50 MP-pixel main camera, a 13 MP-pixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 12 MP-pixel periscope telephoto camera with OIS support. Like the Mate 60 series, the device runs Harmony OS 4.0.
The Huawei Mate X5 comes with a 5060mAh battery and supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Other features available on the Mate X5 include dual SIM, NM card slot, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, dual-band GPS, NFC, 2D face unlock, USB-C, two-way satellite connectivity, and waterproofing with IPX8 rating. The phone measures 156.9 x 72.4 x 11.08 mm in folded form and 156.9 x 141.5 x 5.3 mm in unfolded form. The device weighs approximately 245 grams.
2. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5
Samsung developed the first book-style foldable phone on the market and has continued to improve its phone every year. Since then, it has improved the hinge, durability and software to a great extent.
However, Samsung has also become very comfortable in this space, so it's been sitting pretty for the past few years. Very little has changed between the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 -- in fact, the biggest change is that it finally folds flat.
That being the case, the phone's hardware has been around for several generations now, so it doesn't necessarily need to be radically changed. Coupled with software that has improved year after year, Samsung's folding flagship phone has been the best of its kind for several generations and the software continues to get better and better. Nonetheless, there is still one big flaw.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a screen protector that is almost unusable for the average person. It's very narrow and tall, although it opens up to an opulent inner screen that's perfect for two-handed use. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 isn't bad if you like to use your phone with one hand, but too many other manufacturers have shown us how to do it better.
Nevertheless, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is still the industry leader in foldable devices. Of course, the best foldable smartphones are also the most expensive.
3. Samsung Galaxy Flip 5
Samsung is also at the front of the pack when it comes to flip phones. Although Motorola was ahead of Samsung for a few months with the original Motorola Razr, Samsung continues to dominate. Everything about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 feels premium, including the phone's most striking addition - the 3.4-inch overlay screen that takes up most of the top half of the phone.
In addition to a number of optimized apps, the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5's cover screen can handle many of the widgets Samsung has built specifically for the screen. If you want to skip some of the software hurdles, you can open it up to most of the apps you have installed.
Aside from that limitation, the phone is very sturdy in both physical construction and metaphorical experience. The camera is great and the internal screen size is huge. If you like the form factor, it's also a very attractive offer for the price.
4. Xiaomi Mix Fold 3
If you're on a budget for a foldable phone, then consider Xiaomi. The phone maker has a long history of making high-quality hardware at a low cost and usually delivers on that promise. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is powerful and has an excellent camera setup.
Specifically, this set of cameras comes with a 50 MP main camera, a 10 MP 3.2x optical zoom lens, a 10 MP 5x optical periscope lens, and a 12 MP ultra-wide angle camera. All of these cameras return very good results and the appeal of a 5x optical zoom camera on a foldable device cannot be underestimated.
The phone is incredibly thin, measuring less than 11 millimeters thick when folded and 5.3 millimeters thick when unfolded, which is even more impressive considering it also packs a 4,800 mAh battery and supports 67W wired and 50W wireless charging. Even so, believe it or not, this isn't the thinnest foldable on this list.
5. Motorola razr 40 Ultra
Motorola is aggressively entering the foldable market with the Motorola razr 40 Ultra. This phone has the largest covered screen of any flip foldable phone and is also the thinnest phone in the style.
The protective screen takes up most of the top half of the phone and even surrounds the dual camera lenses. Motorola did double down on the cover screen and even built a set of apps and games specifically for it .
While Samsung conditionally allows you to run almost any app on the cover screen, Motorola built an app launcher into its cover screen interface and allows you to add almost any app you want to run on that screen, whether it was built for that purpose or not. It takes less battery to power half the screen than the entire screen.
There are two main reasons you might want to skip this phone: build quality and the camera. The build quality of this phone is decent, but it lacks the polish that Samsung puts into their phones. The Motorola razr 40 Ultra is a redesign of the previous generations of the Razr, which makes it feel like first-generation hardware.
These cameras are terrible and rely heavily on good lighting or the ability to edit photos after the fact. Even in daylight, describing the video quality as "good" is very generous.
6. Honor Magic V2
Next up is a very compelling book-style foldable phone in the form of the Honor Magic V2. It's a sequel to the Honor Magic Vs we saw earlier this year, but Honor has upped its gaming game considerably.
What makes the Honor Magic V2 such a compelling phone is how thin and light it is. When closed, the phone is just 9.9 mm thick and when you open it, the thickness shrinks to 4.8 mm. What's even more ridiculous is that the phone comes with a 5,000 mAh battery.
The Honor Magic V2 has a very comfortable 20:9 screen ratio, which, combined with the thickness of the phone when closed, makes it feel very much like a non-folding straight phone. Basically, there's no learning curve to using the phone when it's closed. When you open it, the phone feels very thin, but still very sturdy. This phone will be an easy favorite.
