I test a variety of laptops every year and many of them are very good. But you can't buy them all. So to help you make your buying decision, here I am, choosing the 10 best laptops for the Best Laptops of 2023 page.

I have a variety of options for you. These aren't necessarily the best laptops ever, but in my opinion they are the best laptops you can buy right now.

1. Apple MacBook Air (M2): Best Laptop of 2023

The latest MacBook Air is powered by the Apple M2 processor, and the base model includes 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, an 8-core CPU, and an 8-core GPU. the model with 512GB of storage is the one we'd recommend to most people to get more out of your laptop.

The Air has lost the wedge-shaped design it's had for years, but retains many of the other great features of years past, including MagSafe charging, Touch ID, and a scissor-switch keyboard, and adds a new 1080p webcam and two new color options.

The internal M2 processor isn't as fast or powerful as the M1 Pro or M1 Max in the larger MacBook Pro models, but it's still very fast. In my tests, it was able to handle heavy office software with little heat or slowdown. Given how thin and light this computer is, it offers a combination of power and portability that you'll be hard-pressed to find in many other laptops.

2. MacBook Pro (14-inch and 16-inch): The Best Macbook for Creators

It can be confusing to see 2021 MacBook Pro models (with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips) and 2023 MacBook Pro models (with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips) on this list.

The 2023 models are more powerful laptops, but due to their higher price, they are also more niche laptops that I would recommend primarily to professionals. I think the 2021 models are now much less expensive and are a better buy for a more mainstream audience. That's why they rank high on this list.

In my benchmarks, which tested a variety of creative tasks including encoding, playback, and export times, the MacBook Pro 16 performed better than any laptop we've used.

In my tests, the 16-inch configuration with the M1 Pro processor lasted 16 hours of use, making it the longest-lasting laptop I've ever reviewed.

Elsewhere, we have basically no complaints about the 2021 MacBook Pro. It has a gorgeous display that's as bright as 1,000 nits when playing HDR content. It combines it with some of the best speakers ever heard on a laptop. These Pro models can output to multiple external displays, while the Air is limited to just one.

If you're looking for a machine that can handle demanding workloads and also serve as a great multimedia device after hours, you'll probably be pleased with the features of the M1 Pro and M1 Max. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is a great laptop in so many ways, with a great display, a great keyboard, fast specs, and several useful ports.

If you're a creative professional who isn't quite willing to take on the price of the MacBook Pro 16-inch, or if you're looking for something more compact, then the 14-inch MacBook Pro may be a better fit for you. The laptop is smaller, lighter, and cheaper than its 16-inch counterpart, but comes with the same powerful processor options and the same great screen.

3. Asus Asus X Dual Screen Pro 2023: the best dual-screen laptop

I can actually recommend purchasing a dual-screen laptop. In the past, the dual-screen form factor has given the impression of being fancy, hard to look at, and hard to use. But in the Asus Spirit X Dual Screen Pro 2023, Asus has made the screen significantly more angular than before, with a higher resolution and anti-glare etching to make it really useful.

Using ASUS' ScreenXpert software, ASUS Asus Asus X Dual Screen Pro 2023 users essentially have a small, crisp secondary OLED display on their keyboard pad. The second screen can also be turned into a giant touchpad, which is useful because the actual touchpad the laptop comes with is very small.

The laptop also features high-performance chips from Intel and Nvidia, as well as a spacious 16:10 home screen. While the front keyboard layout isn't for everyone, this innovative laptop is the best choice for shoppers who want to combine multiple screens into one.

4. Asus Asus Pro14 2023: Best Gaming Laptop

You have to be careful with this one because some models are too expensive for what they offer. Specifically, we think this model is the best 14-inch gaming laptop you can buy.

It's the perfect portable laptop, lightweight, thin, and comes with an excellent keyboard, touchpad, port selection, and screen. In my tests, it produced very consistent frame rates and I didn't notice a huge difference in their performance. We have all-day battery life, something you don't see in everyday gaming laptops.

If you're interested in an animated grid of colored lights on your computer, you can also spend the extra money on a model that features the Asus AniMe Matrix. We don't think these models are a particularly good value for the price, but they do have some lovely benefits - you can customize them to display text or images of your choosing, and there's a virtual pet on top that you can play with.

5. MacBook Pro 16-inch (M2 Pro and M2 Max): Best Laptop for Video Editing

If you're a hard-working professional looking for the best power, graphics, and battery life Apple has to offer, you need the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Apple's new M2 Pro or M2 Max. It's not cheap, but it's one of the most powerful and durable laptops you can buy.

To reiterate, I think most creators should opt for a discounted M1 Pro or M1 Max laptop instead of this one - the latest M2 Pro and M2 Max are best suited for advanced users with deep pockets.

The 2023 MacBook Pro looks very similar to the 2021 MacBook Pro, with the same camera slot, the same selection of ports (including MagSafe charging), and the same great speaker system.

In my testing, I found that the M2 Max provided a few extra hours of battery life over the M1 Max that powers the 2021 MacBook Pro 16.

The M2 Max also has more multi-core and single-core CPU processing power, as well as more graphics processing power than the M1 Max. For office tasks, this won't make any difference, but could save you some time if your career requires a really powerful PC.

6. MacBook Air 15-inch: the best 15-inch laptop

The MacBook Air 15-inch is the 15-inch laptop that many people have been waiting for. It has a big, gorgeous screen, but is lighter and cheaper than the currently available 16-inch MacBook Pro model.

It has the same M2 chip as the 13-inch MacBook Air, but its larger chassis allows for extra cooling (and therefore, slightly higher performance). The Air 15-inch is a good choice for those who like the portability of the 13-inch MacBook Air but want more screen space.

The 15-inch Air does have some compromises that the 14-inch and 16-inch Pros don't. Most importantly, its port selection is limited to two USB-C Thunderbolt, a MagSafe, and a headphone jack, and all but the headphone jack are crammed on the left side.

It also only supports one external monitor, which can be a frustrating limitation for some. Nonetheless, as a more affordable and portable option than Apple's other big-screen offerings, the Air is still the best choice for many.

7. Dell XPS 13: The best Windows laptops

The Dell XPS 13 is a compact and reliable laptop. Its beautiful body, great 16:10 display, and excellent performance make it a great choice for the universal user. Weighing in at well under three pounds and slightly more than half an inch thick, it's a dream for travel and mobile work.

The specs on my test model were perfect for the job tasks I needed to get done. If you don't need heavyweight performance, I do recommend a silent cooling profile, as the fan runs very easily on that model. There's also an even nicer Dell XPS 13 Plus available, which includes a variety of new features not found on the XPS 13, including an OLED display option, a bezel-less haptic touchpad with LED touch function keys, and a more powerful P -series processor.

For most people I wouldn't recommend this model, but if you want something with a snazzy higher screen resolution then it's worth looking into.

8. Microsoft Surface Laptop 5: A thin and light option that costs less

Surface Laptop 5 looks and feels very similar to last year's Surface Laptop 4. Like its predecessor, the Laptop 5 is thin and well-made, with Microsoft's signature elegance. New this year, the Laptop 5 supports Thunderbolt 4, but unlike last year, there's only an Intel model, not an AMD model.

Internally, the 12th Gen processor delivers satisfactory performance, especially for single-core tasks. We felt no heat or fan noise during testing, which is excellent considering the thin profile of the device.

My tasks also looked fairly sharp on the 3:2, 13-inch display. My main complaint is the battery life, which is okay, but not amazing, and down from last year's results.

9. Thunderbolt Spirit Blade 16: The best laptop for AAA gaming

The Razer Blade 16 is an incredible purchase for gamers with deep pockets. Equipped with high-end chips from Nvidia and Intel, it can run most of today's most demanding games at the highest settings with all the effects you could want. Add Razer's signature mild chassis and a fun (but unobtrusive) RGB keyboard and there's nothing to complain about.

But it's not just performance that stands out - the games look great too. The Blade features an optional Mini LED screen. Not only does the panel offer rich, vivid colors, but it also has dual-mode capability.

As some of the earlier entries on this list demonstrate, you don't need to spend this much on a gaming laptop to get a great gaming experience. But if you're looking for the best performance and best display you can squeeze out of a 16-inch form factor, then this is the one for you. It's a luxury gaming experience at a luxury price.

10. HP Spectre x360: The best 2-in-1 laptop ever

The HP Spectre x360 is an extremely gorgeous laptop with a sturdy build and premium look and feel. It comes with a spacious 3:2 OLED screen with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz that's vivid, crisp and bright. You also get a comfortable keyboard, clear bass audio, and a useful selection of ports.

Performance is very fast and it stayed unheated and quiet in most of my daily tests. If you're looking for a sleek and stylish laptop, the HP Spectre series is for you.

However, there are a couple of major drawbacks to this machine. First, the battery life is not very long. I average four to five hours of continuous use.

This isn't necessarily surprising given the screen's high resolution and refresh rate, but for some people, buying a Spectre is still impractical. We expect many of the laptops at the top of this list to last at least a few more hours on a charge.

Another thing to note is that this laptop is not cheap. Many customers will find longer battery life and similar performance in many of the cheaper offerings. When you do need a 2-in-1 laptop, the Spectre is only worth splurging on if battery life isn't your top priority and if you value aesthetics and craftsmanship. The bottom line is this.
