Hello, how are you? I am the original huh, click on the attention, more exciting content waiting for you!
It's the height of the new phone season right now, and with the launch of a number of new models, including the iPhone, sparking a lot of discussion, many people are starting to wonder if it's time for an upgrade. Whether you're in the market for a new Apple or Android phone, there are a multitude of exciting options available right now. Of course, Huawei phones are here to stay due to the fact that they are almost impossible to grab.
With the introduction of large-screen phones like the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the utility of foldable phones is coming to the fore, Samsung's top flagship phones are breaking new ground with their smartphone camera technology, and the iPhone is finally making the switch from Lightning to USB-C ports. Let's take an in-depth look at these latest machine kings.
The best iPhone for most people: iPhone 15
Last year, we recommended buying the new iPhone 13 over the iPhone 14 because the minor upgrades to the standard iPhone 14 weren't really worth the wait, but this year is a different story. But this year is a different story, and the iPhone 15 sees significant upgrades in a few key areas, starting with the introduction of the new Dynamic Island.
This feature is a small free-floating area at the top of the screen, similar to a pill-shaped notch, that can be expanded to display key status and time-sensitive information. It also has more potential, and app developers will fully consider its use in future updates.
Another major change is the introduction of a completely new interface: Lightning is out and USB-C takes its place. While this may be a slight inconvenience at first, as you'll need to replace your old Lightning cables and accessories, it will be a positive change in the long run.
This means that you'll be able to charge your laptop, iPad, and many other gadgets using the same cable, which is especially handy when traveling. In addition, you will finally be able to share the charging cable with your friends who use Android phones.
There are also some exciting camera upgrades, starting with the new high-resolution 48MP main camera sensor. This makes more pixels available than the previous 12MP camera, so you can zoom in 2x losslessly when cropping images. This is especially useful on the standard iPhone 15, which doesn't have a dedicated telephoto lens.
This generation of iPhone also brings a very useful new feature to Portrait Mode - the ability to add a portrait effect after the shot has been taken. When the phone detects a face in the scene being photographed, it automatically saves the depth information, making it easy to edit photos to add a blurred background effect.
This new feature is especially good for situations where you need to switch to portrait mode in a second to capture a cute moment with your child or pet.
Best Android phone for most people: Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus is a slight upgrade to its predecessor, but these improvements are excellent. It still boasts a large 6.6-inch screen with an excellent 120Hz refresh rate, making the screen smoother when scrolling and amazing to use.
Additionally, fine-tuning of the display technology and a larger 4,700mAh battery give the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus improved battery life over its predecessor, so you can have more power left over after a full day of intense use without the need to recharge frequently.
The phone also comes with a brand new chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This upgrade is available for all models sold globally and is very fast, whether it's handling everyday tasks or dealing with heavier gaming and other requirements.
In addition, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus retains many familiar features. Even the base model comes with 256GB of internal storage to fulfill the storage needs of users.
The triple camera system on the rear carries over from last year's model, but that's largely a good thing. By default, the main camera utilizes a 50 MP pixel sensor that produces crisp, vivid 12 MP photos.
Portrait mode, in particular, sees the main camera and 3x telephoto camera teaming up to take great photos with excellent subject separation. Outside of Portrait mode, however, the 3x zoom lens is relatively ordinary, with a focal length that's less than ideal for capturing distant scenes.
The part of Samsung's phone that we're most unhappy with is the pre-installed software it comes with, which includes a lot of duplicate apps. But there's good news: the phone features One UI 5.1 and is scheduled to come with four OS upgrades and five years of security updates. This means you can rest assured that you'll be able to continue using the phone well into the future.
Best high-end iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro
The iPhone 15 Pro does something rare among high-end phones: it actually gets more compact. While the width and height have been reduced by just a millimeter, this makes the phone more comfortable to hold.
And that new titanium material often mentioned in Apple ads makes a significant difference: iPhone 15 Pro is 19 grams lighter than iPhone 14 Pro. That's a welcome improvement, since the previous iPhone 14 Pro was quite heavy.
The side of the phone now has a new action button that replaces the mute switch. It will be very useful if you have the patience to set its shortcut function.
Or you can map it to one of a number of preset features, such as launching the Camera app directly in video mode or turning on the flashlight. iPhone 15 Pro is easier to maneuver than the larger iPhone Pro Max, which has a taller, less accessible bezel.
The iPhone 15 Pro is the smaller of the two Pro models and doesn't have the longer focal length lens of the larger model, but it's definitely a good choice for most users looking for an exceptional phone with several value-added features.
Instead of the longer focal length 5x lens found on the iPhone Pro Max, the regular iPhone 15 Pro features the familiar 3x zoom lens. If you're a photographer who prefers telephoto lenses, that's something to consider. However, you can now also take advantage of two new digital "lenses": 28mm and 35mm equivalents.
You can easily switch between them by tapping the 1x icon in the Camera app, and they're not just plain zoomed or cropped, so they're better in terms of image quality than photos cropped after the fact. If you think your phone's stock 24mm equivalent lens has too wide a field of view, you now have a couple of great options.
The iPhone 15 Pro comes with Apple's latest mobile chip, the A17 Pro, which delivers console-like gaming performance. It's not a feature that everyone will use, but it does have great processing power if you need it.
The phone inherits the always-on display introduced in last year's iPhone Pro lineup and adds iOS 17's new Standby Mode feature, which gives you a handy bedside clock by simply charging your phone horizontally.
They all come with a hefty price tag, but if you're on a budget, the iPhone 15 Pro does offer some valuable upgrades over the standard iPhone 15 model.
Best high-end Android phone: the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung's flagship model and offers an impressive array of features including a built-in stylus, four rear cameras, a large 6.8-inch screen, and a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.
The hardware on this phone is very powerful, at the "kitchen sink" level, and includes almost every kind of top-of-the-line technology. However, due to its relatively high starting price, it may not be suitable for those looking for a cost-effective Android phone.
But if you demand the highest quality products, then the Galaxy S23 Ultra is definitely the way to go. Its camera system performs well, especially in portrait mode, while it is also capable of capturing excellent images at 30x zoom.
The core rear camera of the phone features a new 200 MP pixel main camera sensor that delivers fine detail in both good and low light conditions. While the built-in S Pen isn't brand new or updated for 2023, it's still an excellent tool when you need to take quick notes.
The huge screen presents detailed images that scroll smoothly and supports variable refresh rates of up to 120Hz, which can also be lowered to 1Hz for different needs. The large 5,000mAh battery on board is able to cope with a full day of intense use, although it should not be expected to last more than a day.
The common complaints associated with Samsung's software apply to this phone as well, and are even more pronounced on such an expensive device. The phone may default to downloading a series of extra apps that you may not need during installation, although you can opt out of a good portion of them and hide most of the ones that can't be uninstalled.
However, the phone offers four OS platform upgrades and five years of security updates, which, while not as good as Apple's, ranks it among the top in the Android camp.
Best flip phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 brings two significant improvements that make it stand out in the foldable phone space: a larger screen and strong competition. The Motorola Razr Plus is another highly regarded flip foldable phone, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers more options when it comes to value for money.
The phone's protective 3.4-inch screen offers a variety of convenient ways to interact with your phone without having to fully unfold it. You can view your calendar and weather information on the screen, as well as send quick messages and emails directly from the cover screen using the full QWERTY keyboard. If you're more of an apps person, then the Razr Plus may be better for you.
On the inside, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 maintains its great 6.7-inch display for your everyday phone needs. Additionally, it packs a powerful camera system that allows you to create interesting photos with the phone partially folded or with the screen off.
Of course, as with all foldable phones, its long-term durability may need to be seen further, but at least the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is fully waterproof to IPX8 standards. That's more than most other foldable phones, even the Razr Plus, which is only splash-proof.
Samsung is promising up to four years of OS upgrades and five years of security update support for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, which is one year more than Motorola's plan for the Razr Plus and one of the best software support policies on the Android platform.
One of these factors is enough to make one choose the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 over the Razr Plus, and ensures that Samsung's foldable phone continues to lead the competition.
Best foldable phone: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5
For years, I've regarded Samsung's Galaxy Fold line as the best of the folding phones. That's both because of its excellence and because there was little competition for a long time.
The newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 finally has a worthy competitor: the Huawei Mate X5. Despite the competition, I think the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is still the best foldable phone for the money, although there's still room for improvement.
For starters, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5's tall and narrow aspect ratio isn't our favorite. It's still a bit inconvenient to use the phone's protective 6.2-inch screen in the folded state. However, the real charm lies in its massive 7.6-inch internal screen, and Samsung's excellent multitasking software provides an excellent user experience.
Camera-wise, Samsung's own Galaxy S23 Ultra offers a much better performance in terms of overall camera system. Of course, the current Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is also capable of taking decent photos, but there may be some inconsistencies in certain situations, and its 3x telephoto lens may be limited in its performance.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has an IPX8 rating, which means it's fully waterproof, but it's not 100% protected against dust infiltration. Dust is a potential problem for foldable phones, so you need to consider this if you're a first-time foldable phone buyer.
However, Samsung has been continually improving the overall durability of its foldable phones for years, even though the first generation was not fully proven.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 remains a favorite among many users. While its high and narrow aspect ratio may be uncomfortable for some, for others, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 remains unbeatable.
