If you're after cutting-edge phone tech, then your eyes will undoubtedly be on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max.

It's worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a flat screen with only a slight bend in the glass edges, whereas the iPhone 15 Pro Max also has a flat screen, a change we found to be even better.

Both phones support high resolution, though the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a higher resolution of 1440p. They both support a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, which reduces the refresh rate of static content to 1Hz.

It's not an exaggeration to say that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to outshine the iPhone 15 Pro Max in terms of screen brightness. its maximum brightness is expected to reach 2,500 nits as compared to 2,000 nits for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In terms of biometrics, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra uses an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanner, which has proven to be reliable and fast in previous generations. Image-based face recognition is also available. On the iPhone 15 Pro Max, on the other hand, you'll have to rely on Face ID, which utilizes a 3D model of your face for recognition. Not only that, but the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra also uses a 50MP sensor for the 5X zoom lens, which means that it will be able to deliver good quality at 10X zoom and even at 20X.

Another fierce competition is video quality, which is currently dominated by the iPhone 15 Pro Max, as the previous Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra's video recording still had some noise and wasn't sharp enough. We're not sure if Samsung will be able to make significant improvements in this area.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra offers 8K video recording, an option that's missing from the iPhone 15 Pro Max, though we're not sure many people really care about that given the massive file sizes of 8K video and the limitations of most monitors and TVs to support it.

Audio Quality and Haptics

In terms of speakers, both the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro Max feature a bottom-firing main speaker and a secondary speaker in the earpiece.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has made a visual change to the bottom speaker, featuring a pill-shaped cutout instead of the previous perforated design, suggesting that the speaker may have undergone some tweaks as well.

In terms of haptic feedback, the iPhone 15 Pro Max's vibration feedback feels still more refined through the Taptic Engine, and while Samsung's vibration motor performs well, we do want to see some improvements.

Battery life and charging

Will it last two days between charges? The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has an estimated battery capacity of 5,000 mAh, which is theoretically better than the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 4,422 mAh battery. However, these numbers alone don't allow for a full assessment, as there are significant differences in battery optimization between Android and iOS.

It also means iOS is able to use power more efficiently for the same battery size. In fact, our use of the iPhone 15 Pro Max showed that it could last up to two days between charges without excessive screen use. Whether the Galaxy will be able to reach that level is unclear, but the new energy efficiency of the rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 should help.

In terms of charging, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to charge at 45W, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max charges at 20W.

In fact, the iPhone 15 Pro Max can reach a charging speed of around 25W, but that still means a full charge will take around 1 hour and 40 minutes, whereas the Galaxy could take just a few minutes.

Both support wireless charging, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max comes with magnetic MagSafe support and 15W charging speeds, while the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra should be rated at 10W+ along with regular Qi charging support.
