With enough force, almost any phone can be folded—even the best-selling models can’t resist brute force. However, only a few can survive the fold. From retro throwbacks to cutting-edge clamshell designs, these top flip phones are portable, durable, and packed with powerful hardware.
Flip phones have shrunk to half the size of traditional smartphones by hiding a large screen inside. Their external screens are also getting smarter, allowing you to reply to messages or check emails without having to constantly flip open the phone.
Combined with increasingly powerful cameras, these phones are the best all-rounders. We’ve tested the best flip phones on the market and picked out the upcoming models you can look forward to.
Best flip phone overall: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6
Samsung’s flagship flip phone finally has the camera hardware and battery power to bring it more in line with the company’s mainstream phone, the Samsung Galaxy S24. This otherwise innocuous upgrade keeps up with the performance and adds useful software tweaks that make the most of the form factor. Some of the AI additions are genuinely useful, too.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is equipped with an ultra-large capacity battery with powerful performance, comparable to the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S24. It is also equipped with the same 50MP main camera as the S24, supporting optical image stabilization, and impressive imaging performance.
Samsung’s design team also spared no effort. Galaxy Z Flip 6 abandons the rounded polished metal frame and adopts a straight side design with a matte surface to effectively reduce fingerprint residue and provide outstanding texture.
However, the phone isn’t perfect. I’m still frustrated by the limited functionality of the cover screen – it’s more of a widget than a full app unless you go through the trouble of tweaking the settings first. Motorola’s RAZR 50 Ultra does this much better.
Still, for Samsung loyalists, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is a step above its predecessor in every way. If you’ve been dismissive of flip phones before, this phone might just change your mind.

Best flip phone with big battery: Xiaomi Mi MIX Flip
The Xiaomi Mi MIX Flip was an impressive first attempt at a foldable phone that wowed us with its sleek design, huge battery, and liquid-light-enhanced camera.
This phone feels like a big shot in the category, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Motorola’s Razr 50 Ultra. Its high price means it’s stepping into a competitive ring, but we think it’s ready to hold its own.
We were impressed by both high-quality screens, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset provided smooth performance. The 50MP camera, with help from Leica, delivered sharp, vibrant shots that will delight any photography enthusiast — but there’s still room for improvement.
The Mi MIX Flip features a flexible AMOLED display and powerful stereo speakers for an immersive video viewing experience. However, we noticed that app support for external screens is still rudimentary and needs to be improved. The lack of water resistance is also unfortunate, and the device may get slightly warm under intensive use.
If fast charging and excellent photography performance are your priorities, then the Mi MIX Flip is definitely worth a look. As Xiaomi’s first flip phone, it performs well and injects new vitality into the flip market.

Best flip phone for outdoor use: Motorola Razr 50 Ultra
The iconic Razr celebrates 20 years in the making with this clamshell phone, giving you the largest display ever in a foldable phone, allowing you to run all your favorite apps for hours without even opening the phone.
The brand new color scheme, stronger waterproof performance and built-in Gemini AI intelligence further enhance its charm. More importantly, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra has upgraded the external dual camera system.
Two 50MP sensors make up for the lack of photography by delivering clearer, sharper images than its predecessor, making it the best all-around flip phone on the market today.

Best previous-generation flip phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 addresses some of the major shortcomings of its predecessor while retaining its compact size, making it a more ideal foldable phone choice for mainstream users. The phone is still well-made and waterproof, and now the gap between the two halves of the screen has been completely eliminated, making the larger external display more practical.
When unfolded, the 6.7-inch OLED screen is sharp and delicate, with bright colors, and its potential for multitasking is particularly outstanding – you can open multi-window mode by swiping with two fingers. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor is comparable to the flagship model of the previous year, with powerful performance and satisfactory battery life.
However, the camera hardware has not been significantly upgraded, so the image quality is still slightly inferior to the top traditional smartphones, but the gap is not obvious. Thanks to Samsung’s powerful software optimization, the photo performance is still reliable and the daily quick shot effect is excellent.

Best cheap flip phone: OPPO Find N2 Flip
With some very competitive hardware, OPPO’s phone looks set to shake up the market. Although it failed to take on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series in the market, the OPPO Find N2 Flip is still a flip phone worth considering today.
Even though its internal hardware is a bit outdated these days, it still has appeal for those on a budget, with an elegant design, a decent rear camera, and the largest battery of any flip phone I’ve tested.
However, the size of the external display is not outstanding nowadays, the lack of wireless charging function is also a bit regrettable. In addition, OPPO’s customized Android system may be a bit aggressive in power management.

Best flip phone from a smaller brand: Nubia Flip 5G
Nubia is not a big brand, but Nubia has quietly tilted the top champions. These are largely positioned as gaming phones, but the Nubia Flip 5G shows the company’s new attempt in the flip phone field, and the positioning is eye-catching.
Its unique circular external display screen stands out among many competing products, and it is paired with a large-capacity 4300mAh battery, and the performance of the mid-range chip is particularly satisfactory.
Although only one of the two rear cameras is outstanding and it lacks high-end features such as wireless charging and IP protection rating, its affordable price makes it very competitive. Apart from the second-hand market or choosing last year’s old model, it is difficult to find other equally affordable alternatives.
