Apple’s long-rumored foldable phone has finally seen more concrete developments. According to the latest leaked video, the new device has revealed a fairly complete design, further suggesting it’s part of Apple’s future foldable product lineup.

Whether it will actually use the name “iPhone Ultra” is not yet officially confirmed, so it’s more appropriate to consider it as a possible product name for now.

What is certain, however, is that Apple is no longer just at the foldable screen concept stage. Regardless of the final name, this device is likely to be the most significant attempt at product line change for Apple in recent years.

Design: Wider, and more like a small, portable booklet.

Based on the currently leaked videos, this foldable iPhone will likely only be available in black and white initially. The choices are indeed limited, but this isn’t unexpected for Apple’s first new product. Focusing on perfecting the product itself is more important than releasing a wide range of colors right away.

What really caught my attention was its proportions. It didn’t copy the elongated design of many large Android foldable phones; instead, it’s closer to a “passport-style” form, making it wider overall. When unfolded, it resembles a smaller iPad mini, suitable for viewing documents, videos, and multitasking; when folded, it retains the traditional iPhone’s usage logic, only with a wider body.

I think this direction is actually quite reasonable. Many foldable screens are great when unfolded, but when folded, they’re too narrow, making typing and browsing uncomfortable. If Apple really adopts this wider aspect ratio, it might find a more realistic balance between the large-screen experience and everyday one-handed use.

4.5mm: The most noteworthy feature is probably not the folding mechanism, but the thickness.

According to current information, the unfolded thickness of this foldable iPhone may be only 4.5mm, even thinner than the iPhone Air, which is known for its slim and lightweight design. For a foldable device that also houses a hinge and two screens, this is indeed a very impressive figure.

The key to Apple’s ability to compress the body to this extent likely lies in the hinge. It’s said that this structure underwent a rather complex redesign, not only controlling the thickness but also minimizing the crease on the inner screen. If the final mass-production result closely resembles the leaked images, then the crease could become a significant advantage over existing foldable screens.

However, the ultra-thin body also means some trade-offs. The rear camera is expected to use two 48-megapixel lenses, placed on a horizontal camera platform similar to the iPhone Air, but it will not feature the telephoto lens commonly found in the Pro series. This is certainly a disappointment for those who like telephoto photography, but it’s not hard to understand given that it’s only 4.5mm thick.

Therefore, the focus of this device may not be on cramming all the flagship features into it, but rather on finding a balance between its foldable form factor, slim and lightweight design, and basic imaging capabilities. It may not be the iPhone with the most powerful camera, but it could be Apple’s most radical attempt at industrial design.

Hardware: Top-tier configuration is no surprise, but Touch ID is more worthy of discussion.

According to current information, the iPhone Ultra will share core hardware with the iPhone 18 Pro series, including the A20 Pro chip using TSMC’s N2 process, 12GB of RAM, and Apple’s new generation of self-developed C2 baseband.

This configuration itself isn’t surprising, but it fits its positioning perfectly. Foldable screens place higher demands on performance, power consumption, and multitasking capabilities. In addition to ensuring smooth daily operation, the A20 Pro will also handle more on-device AI computing. The C2 baseband means that Apple will continue to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm, but the actual signal and power consumption performance still needs to be verified in mass-produced devices.

What really surprised me was the potential absence of Face ID. Rumors suggest Apple will switch to a side-mounted Touch ID, perhaps because the ultra-thin body and foldable design don’t offer enough space for a full facial recognition component. Logically, this makes sense, but on Apple’s highest-end, most expensive phone, it still feels somewhat lacking in flagship appeal.

This device is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series, with a price potentially exceeding 21,999 yuan. It’s destined not to be a mass-market iPhone, but rather Apple’s first step in exploring the ultra-high-end foldable market.

My opinion

While the iPhone Ultra’s entry into the foldable screen market wasn’t early, Apple has rarely won by being the “first to do it.” It’s more adept at waiting for the product form factor to mature before re-integrating the design, system, and ecosystem to create a version more easily accepted by ordinary users.

What attracts me most right now is the rumored 4.5mm thin body and shallower screen crease. If the final production version can achieve this, this product could be very competitive in terms of thinness and overall design. However, the problem is also straightforward: the expected price of over 21,999 yuan means users won’t accept significant shortcomings, and the hinge, battery life, crease design, and software compatibility must all be sufficiently mature.

Therefore, it’s too early to call it the best foldable screen. What truly determines the success or failure of the iPhone Ultra isn’t that Apple has finally made a foldable phone, but whether it can fully bring all the advantages rumored in the leaks to the final product.
