Apple has confirmed that it will hold a special fall event at 1:00 AM Beijing time on September 10th. This year, the event is indeed somewhat special. Tim Cook announced his resignation as CEO in April, and John Ternus officially took over on September 1st. The new generation iPhone will thus be his first major hardware launch event since assuming the CEO position.

This year’s iPhone lineup is also quite unusual. Current leaks suggest the standard iPhone 18 may not debut in September, but will be delayed until 2027. The expected arrivals this fall are the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-rumored foldable iPhone.

The name “iPhone Ultra” isn’t entirely confirmed yet, but the foldable screen itself is already the most anticipated Apple product this year. At this pace, we won’t see the usual simultaneous release of the standard and Pro models in September. With two Pro models and Apple’s first attempt at a foldable screen, the number of products is fewer, but the focus is more concentrated.

I’m actually more interested in seeing how Apple ultimately prices its products. With rising costs for memory and storage chips this year, Apple has already adjusted the prices of some Macs, iPads, and home devices. The Pro models weren’t cheap to begin with, and a foldable screen is even less likely to be priced low. On the day of the launch event, the price will probably generate more discussion than many of the specifications.

iPhone 18 series: Foldable screens are finally coming to the market.

The biggest change in this year’s iPhone 18 series may not be the phones themselves, but rather the release date. The September batch is expected to include only the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s long-awaited first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and the second-generation iPhone Air will likely have to wait until spring 2027.

In this way, the foldable screen will become the most unique product at this year’s launch event. For now, it’s being called the “iPhone Ultra,” and its form factor is a book-like fold, unfolding to resemble a small tablet.

The price will definitely not be cheap. I heard it is expected to exceed 20,000 yuan. Its positioning has always been significantly higher than that of the regular iPhone, so I don’t think Apple will use it to replace the standard version. It’s more like adding a new position to the existing product line.

The changes to the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are much more familiar. A larger battery, variable aperture, A20 chip, a smaller “Swiss Island” camera module, and a redesigned rear camera module are the main focuses of current rumors. Color options include light blue, dark cherry, and dark gray.

iOS 27 will also officially debut with the new iPhones this fall, and Siri and AI features will remain important parts of this generation of the system. Therefore, when looking at the iPhone 18 this year, I won’t just focus on how much the Pro version has been upgraded. The standard version’s delay and the first-ever inclusion of a foldable screen are enough to differentiate this year’s product lineup from the past few years.

Apple Watch Series 12: Will Touch ID be coming?

The Apple Watch Series 12 will most likely be updated at the normal pace this year, and the Ultra 4 may also be launched at the same time. The SE series was just replaced last year, so there is less need for another update this year.

There haven’t been any major changes to the appearance of the Series 12 yet; most upgrades will likely be internal. A new processor is almost certainly included, but whether it will be called S11 or S12 is still undecided.

There’s also the possibility of further improvements in battery life. Rather than replacing the casing again, I actually hope Apple can improve this aspect, since we wear the watch every day, and saving a charging session is more practical than many fancy features.

The Touch ID rumor has been circulating for some time. Clues related to Apple Watch fingerprint recognition have indeed appeared in Apple’s internal code, with the most likely approach being to integrate it into a side button. However, there isn’t enough information yet to confirm that the Series 12 will definitely use it, so this feature can only be considered a possibility for now.

Blood pressure-related functions and the AI-powered redesign of the Health App are still under development, but it’s too early to say which ones will be included in this year’s new watch.

watchOS 27 will definitely be released alongside the new watch, and Siri AI will feature prominently. As for the extent to which it will be available in the Chinese market, we’ll have to wait until the official launch to see.

The Series 12 doesn’t seem to be getting a major redesign. What really affects the user experience are the old issues like the chip, battery life, and health features.

AirPods with cameras will have to wait a little longer.

The changes to AirPods may be more radical than simply upgrading sound quality and noise cancellation. Apple is developing AirPods with a miniature camera, but this camera isn’t for taking pictures; instead, it’s for recognizing the surrounding environment and then working with Siri and visual intelligence to perform AI functions.

This direction sounds novel, but privacy issues will immediately follow. After all, headphones are devices that are always worn on the body. If a camera is indeed added, how Apple handles recognition prompts, data access, and the privacy of others will certainly be more sensitive than the function itself.

However, this product is unlikely to appear this year; current information leans towards 2027. We’re more likely to see AirPods 5 this fall. AirPods 4 already achieved a high level of open-back active noise cancellation, so if AirPods 5 continues down this path, the real question is whether its fit, noise cancellation, and sound quality can be further improved.

Beats 360 is also rumored to be updated this fall, meaning Apple’s headphone product line won’t be completely silent this year. It’s just that we’ll have to wait a little longer for the AirPods with a real camera.
