Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max: Best overall iPhone

The iPhone 14 Pro Ma (starting at $8,999) is Apple's biggest and fanciest phone, and the top pick in the iPhone lineup for people who want an all-in-one smartphone. The smaller iPhone 14 Pro is $1,000 cheaper, but we think the Max's larger screen and longer-lasting battery are worth the extra money.

Plus, the iPhone 14 Pro Ma goes above and beyond the standard iPhone 14 with its more powerful processor, always-on display and Dynamic Island. With an upgraded primary camera powered by a new photonic engine and safety features like collision detection and satellite emergency SOS, Apple delivered any great phone on the market, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max wins my Choice Award.

If you choose the 1TB option, it goes up to $13,499. You might prefer the slightly smaller iPhone 14 Pro for $7,999, which has most of the same features, but without the big screen and killer battery life.

This year, the Pro model really stands out from the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, which have fewer cameras, less display innovation, and older processors. Despite its large footprint and high price tag, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the best in its class, conquering both basic and advanced features.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is the best iPhone overall, with great performance, great battery life, a sharp camera, and many useful features not found on the standard model.

iPhone 14: The best iPhone for the masses

iPhone 14 is Apple's workhorse smartphone, offering a reliable everyday experience and essential features like an attractive display, great build quality, all-day battery life, smooth performance and a powerful camera, starting at $5,999.

While it also has some of the more expensive features of iPhone 14 Pro, such as collision detection via satellite and emergency SOS, it skips the most compelling new experiences the series offers, including an always-on display, dynamic island and A16 bionic processor.

There's no doubt that the iPhone 14 will serve most people well, but it feels a bit behind Apple's top Pro line compared to previous models. So while the iPhone 14 Pro Max ($8,999) wins my Best Choice award, the iPhone 14 is still an excellent, safe choice if you want to save money.

Samsung Galaxy S23+: the best Android flagship

Starting at $6,999, the Samsung Galaxy S23+ is Samsung's most traditional flagship smartphone. It offers many of the same features as our Editors' Choice Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (starting at $8,999), but it's a bit smaller and drops the S Pen stylus.

The Samsung Galaxy S23+ still packs a top-of-the-line processor and tons of features in a sleek piece of hardware.

It's a great choice if you want a phone with longer battery life than the standard Samsung Galaxy S23 (starting at $5,199) but without the need to overuse it. Top features of the higher-priced Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra model.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: Best for artists and photographers

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (starting at $8,999) pushes the Samsung Galaxy Note forward as the only smartphone in Samsung's lineup with the S Pen stylus.

The company uses the Samsung Galaxy Note approach with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra; it has almost all the features a flagship phone consumer might want, including high-quality hardware, a great display, great performance and a top-notch camera.

Its oversized size and price make us a little hesitant, but many buyers may overlook the compromises of these phones with such powerful features.

If you don't need a stylus or an extra camera, the smaller, more affordable Galaxy S23+ (starting at $6,999) may be a better fit for you.

But if you want it all, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is my award for best Android phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: The best folding phone

What is a computer? A few years ago, Apple infamously pushed us to take on serious work on the iPad. Now, with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4, the concept of portable productivity has been further elevated with new software that simplifies multitasking.

But the company's latest big folding screen also boasts a wider screen than its predecessor, the Z Fold 3, a more durable design, better camera hardware and more robust 5G support.

Despite the high price, all these improvements have resulted in a phone that we enthusiastically recommend.

Despite the Fold 4's $12,999 price tag, its large screen makes it ideal for gamers, movie lovers, multitaskers and frequent video callers.

Samsung likes to point out that the price has not increased since last year, and even with inflation, $12,999 is still a lot for a phone.

The $7499 Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a completely different kind of folding phone. Yes, it folds too, but it's aimed at fashion-forward buyers who want to use their phones less. It's not a viable alternative to the Galaxy Fold.

Meanwhile, if you're not a fan of the folding design, Samsung's $8,999 Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a great option for advanced users looking for an S Pen stylus. But simply put, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 is by far the phone I'm most excited about this year.
