Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is an excellent phone with an impressive array of features. While all of the cameras on Samsung's high-end Galaxy S23 Ultra are noteworthy, its zoom capabilities remain unmatched by its competitors.

This is especially true of the 10x optical zoom, which captures a lot more detail than the relatively blurry digital zooms of the likes of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Oppo Find X5 Pro in testing.

There's also a 3x zoom for portraits and Samsung's famous 100x space zoom, which is particularly good for moon shots - but admittedly, not much else.

The 200-megapixel primary camera is another big reason to choose the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra over the likes of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Huawei.

With 16-in-1 pixel merging technology, this phone is capable of capturing vibrant, detailed photos in both well-lit and poorly lit environments, and the latter represents a huge step forward compared to the already capable Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Capturing stunning images with the main sensor is almost effortless.

It's not just the hardware, either; the camera app comes with a range of shooting modes, including an upgraded Expert RAW mode that lets you capture RAW images up to 50 megapixels as well as long-exposure shots of the night sky.

It will also record 8K video at 30fps at a wider angle than most of its competitors, which is perfect if you have an 8K TV to show it off.

iPhone 14 Pro

I think the iPhone 14 Pro is the best all-around camera phone. It can take decent videos and has three different cameras for versatility, each with a different focal length.

However, it's not actually the best camera phone in every particular area. On the one hand, I prefer the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra's zoom trick because it captures a sharper overall image when you zoom in on an object. But with that said, the iPhone 14 Pro still comes out on top when you look at it as a whole.

In terms of the overall specs of the camera hardware, the iPhone 14 Pro makes some significant changes to a formula we've been familiar with for years. This is the first iPhone to upgrade from a 12MP sensor to a 48MP main wide-angle camera version. combining images to 12MP but using more pixels. You can take 48MP photos if you want, but that's a separate mode.

Compared to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, photos taken on the iPhone are more lifelike and skin tones feel more natural. there's some slight oversharpening on the iPhone, but for the most part, the image processing produces solid images.

There's a dedicated night mode for shooting in darker environments, and it works very well, retaining a lot of detail and little noise from black spots.

That being said, it's still nice to be able to turn Night Mode on and off as you please because with this phone, it automatically lights up when the camera can't pick up enough light. Night mode is much faster this year, and the 14 Pro is capable of taking some of the best nighttime photos.

In addition to the camera itself, you'll enjoy good battery life so you don't run out of juice on busy shooting days, and a gorgeous display that lets you revisit your images.

VIVO X90 Pro

When it comes to low-light photography, the Vivo X90 Pro is undoubtedly the most powerful phone on the market today, featuring some truly amazing low-light shots.

That's thanks in large part to its inclusion of a 1-inch sensor with an f/1.75 aperture and its primary 50.3MP main camera, which allows it to absorb more light than the powerful iPhone 14 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and the results are immediately striking.

Low-light images captured on the Vivo X90 Pro are not only brighter than the competition, but also have good detail and color accuracy.

In fact, in my experience, the Vivo claims it can take photos in less than dark days, being able to take a garden photo at 11pm in just moonlight makes it look like it was taken on a cloudy day. Some may argue that this isn't real life, and of course it isn't, but in my opinion, it's better to have plenty of light than not enough.

In addition, there are two night modes, Standard and Advanced, which change the amount of light entering the lens. The former offers more real life, while the latter offers something closer to night vision. You also don't need a tripod, even when shooting the stars.

It's not just focused on low light, though; the combination of the main 50.3MP sensor, 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and 50MP 2X telephoto lens provides a versatile shooting experience, although the 2X zoom seems a bit limited compared to most flagships on the market.

Elsewhere, key specs including a high-end Dimensity 9200 chipset, a 5000mAh battery with 120W fast charging technology and a 6.78-inch AMOLED display make for an enticing flagship smartphone.

One Plus 11

The OnePlus 11 is a great all-rounder that hits almost all of the expected points for a flagship phone in 2023, including a great display, top-notch performance, all-day battery life, and a great camera.

The smartphone features an eye-catching design with a slightly shiny finish. On the front, there's a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with 2K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and LTPO 3.0 technology, which means it can be downgraded to 1Hz to conserve battery life on the always-on display.

Turn the phone around and you'll find a trio of cameras, including a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 48-pixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a 32-pixel telephoto lens. We found the camera capable of reproducing impressive colors in 10-bit color, while HDR helps with bright backlighting.

Low-light performance is particularly impressive, and you can even record video at 8K/24fps, although the fairly aggressive cropping means most people will probably stick to 4K/60fps.Similarly, the 16-megapixel selfie camera is good enough to use for calls, but the limitations of 1080p and the lack of autofocus mean that we'd recommend using the rear-facing camera to shoot video.

The OnePlus 11 combines the flagship performance of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with its own OxygenOS Android skin to deliver a more user-friendly and intuitive experience than software from other handset makers like Vivo's FunTouchOS and Xiaomi's MIUI.

The OnePlus 11 also boasts a full day of battery life, with our reviewer left with around 30% at the end of each day. Fast 100W fast charging is supported, but unfortunately wireless charging is nowhere to be found.

While there are many small ways OnePlus could improve this phone, we have no major complaints after testing the OnePlus 11, making it one of the best all-around phones available.
