Quality smartphones are in abundance. Consumers can pick from a wide variety of phones with fast processors, vibrant displays and powerful cameras.
But with so many options out there, deciding which one is right for you isn't always easy. To simplify, I've rounded up our top picks. Each of the phones in this list meets the requirements to be considered the best smartphone. Let's take a look.
Apple iPhone 14 Pro: the best iPhone you can buy
Apple's iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max bring sweeping changes like the Spirit Island, a new 48-megapixel camera system, and Apple's new A16 bionic processor.
All of these upgrades come together to create an experience that feels fresh and fast. The upgrades to the main camera make it possible to take some truly stunning photos, so if you're into mobile photography, this phone will be a great choice.
As Apple's top-of-the-line phone, it's not cheap-especially if you want the larger Max model-but if you're looking for the best all-around performance in an iPhone, then the 14 Pro is the way to go.
Apple iPhone 14: A nice upgrade
While the base iPhone 14 doesn't have the same triple-camera array or new dynamic island notch as its pricier 14 Pro sibling, it still offers a lot of exciting stuff at a more affordable price.
It's a nice upgrade for most thanks to its solid performance, updated main camera and various other tweaks, including a more easily repairable glass back cover in case of a fall.
It's not a major overhaul compared to last year's model, but if you're in the market for a new iPhone and don't want to spend a fortune on the Pro lineup, it's a good option to consider.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: Best Premium Android Phones
The Samsung Galaxy S23 is a lot, but in a good way. It's more than most people need in a phone, but that doesn't make it any less attractive.
Samsung improved the camera's resolution (200 megapixels versus 108 megapixels), color tones and dynamic range, while retaining the same edgy design and large 6.8-inch screen as its predecessor.
There's also a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor optimized specifically for Samsung's phones, which brings faster performance compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Expensive may be a bit of an understatement for this phone, though. But those willing to pay more for a large screen and a high-quality, versatile camera won't be disappointed.
OnePlus 11: A high-performance flagship at a lower price point
Priced low, the OnePlus 11 is a powerful phone that can handle gaming, video streaming, and other common tasks.
In typical OnePlus fashion, this phone is also cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Huawei P60. These cameras aren't the best, but they're great for casual photographers who just want to be casual.
What sets the OnePlus 11 apart from many of its competitors is its ultra-fast 100-watt rapid charge, which can be fully charged in just 25 minutes.
Overall, the OnePlus 11 is perfect for those who want a powerful, fast-charging phone on a budget.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: The best folding phone ever made
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is what I consider to be the most portable and fun phone I reviewed last year. It carries over the best parts of the Z Flip 3, such as its pocket-flip phone-inspired design and Flex Mode, which makes the phone easier to use when half-open.The Z Flip 4 also comes with a new image sensor, which improves image quality compared to the Flip 3, as well as a larger battery and a newer processor.
These improvements address some of the Z Flip 3's biggest shortcomings, though Samsung didn't give us everything we wanted (like a larger overlay screen). But all in all, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a good choice for those who want a phone that's more portable than almost any other phone on the market.
You can also opt for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, which Samsung sells for a still lower price. But that's still a lot of money to spend on a new phone, so I suggest you spend a little more and these technologies will last longer.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Best foldable phone with a big screen
If you're planning to buy a foldable phone with a big screen, make a commitment of your own: buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. Of all the phones I've reviewed this year, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 remains my number one choice for regular use.
But it's also because, deep down, I prefer to use my tablet for everyday tasks such as reading, watching videos, and handling email.
I like the "widescreen" effect of the internal 7.6-inch tablet interface, and I was able to fold the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 smartphone into a 6.2-inch folding phone so I could carry it around in my bag. Yes, this phone is worth a lot of money.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has an impressive list of offerings, as it should be the ultimate, all-in-one foldable phone: a high-resolution AMOLED display, a triple-camera array that compares favorably to Samsung's flagships, 12GB of RAM, a whopping 1TB of storage and IPX8 waterproofing-... -not what you'd normally expect from a perforated phone.
It also runs the latest version of Android; the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 comes with Android 13, which includes more tablet-friendly interface elements than past versions.
