Which smartphone has the best camera in 2023? The most important smartphones of the first half of the year have been released, with the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Xiaomi Mi 13 Ultra competing with other flagships.

Xiaomi 13 Ultra

This is the smartphone with the best camera, dubbed as Xiaomi 13 Ultra.This camera smartphone is not only equipped with four 50 MP image sensors for great image quality over a large focal length range, but it is also fun to take pictures with.

Finally, it's exciting that all image sensors have an 8K resolution video mode, or that this is possible with stepless superzoom in 4K quality.

There is also a camera app with a myriad of features that are fun to play with. This starts with two different Leica color profiles, extends to long exposure and fixed focus street photo modes, and ends with 14-bit RAW recording and 10-bit log video. Don't forget that there's also an optional housing with grip and filter threads.

Along with a great camera system, Xiaomi offers the complete works. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC under the hood powers the phone, along with a great 6.73-inch display and a 5,000 mAh battery with 90 W fast charging.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

If you want the ultimate flagship, then the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is your best bet, offering incredibly great performance in every way. Of course, this also applies to the excellent and versatile camera with a 200 MP primary sensor.

The 10x optical zoom is also really interesting, although the huge gap in focal length range reduces its flexibility. There's also 8K video recording and a number of exciting shooting modes.

Aside from the lenses, the Koreans have also done a great job with the blending. From the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC to the excellent QHD+ display, 120 Hz refresh rate and great battery life, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is indeed "ultra" in every way.

This also applies to software: Samsung's update policy of four years of Android updates and five years of security patches is nothing short of top-notch.

iPhone 14 Pro (Max)

The iPhone 14 Pro (Max) is probably the iPhone with the best camera you can buy right now, and one of the best camera smartphones ever. In the telephoto range, most competitors in this price range now outperform the iPhone, such as the Xiaomi Mi 13 Ultra or (especially) the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

However, the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) rounds out the top three on this best-of list with its compelling night mode, fast and reliable autofocus, and amazing camera apps.

Probably the biggest innovation in the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) is its main sensor, whose resolution is now 48 megapixels. The extra pixels mainly help bridge the gap between the main camera and the 3x telephoto lens, as at 2x zoom the camera still has a 12-megapixel section in the center of the image sensor. Beyond that, however, Apple has also tweaked image quality in every aspect.

Beyond that, the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max impress with their powerful A16 bionic SoCs and great displays, including the always-on feature and dynamic island. And aside from the display island, the design is virtually unchanged.

Vivo X90 Pro

The Vivo X90 Pro comes with the same 1-inch primary sensor as the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro and once again proves itself to be fun to use. It comes with a 50MP telephoto sensor with 2x optics (called Portrait Lens) and a 12MP Ultra Wide-Angle Lens, while the selfie camera has 32MP resolution.

Admittedly, there were some teething problems when we first started using the camera - watermarks on photos and beauty mode for portraits are two default options we'd recommend disabling as soon as possible. But once we got over those hurdles, we were happy.

The zero shutter lag feature takes photos instantly when the light is good, so you won't miss the chance to capture the perfect moment. The sensor is very high quality, with a natural depth of field effect that makes your photos look professional; the portrait camera is also great, but its bokeh effect is admittedly software-assisted rather than completely natural.

Another advantage of this cell phone camera system is its night mode. It can take very fast photos that capture light in incredibly dark scenes. The Astrophotography mode also delivers better results than its competitors when photographing the night sky, in addition to a number of other handy modes (including Auto HDR and Zeiss Natural Color) that will keep you experimenting with the camera.

Our biggest disappointment with the X90 Pro camera is that the optical zoom is capped at just 2x, whereas we would have preferred a 3x or 5x option to get closer to the subject without compromising on quality.

Honor Magic 5 Pro

The Honor Magic 5 Pro has a triple 50 MP camera setup, which we found to be a big upgrade over its predecessor. Including a 122-degree ultra-wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom adds so much versatility that you can get top-notch, high-resolution images from any of these sensors.

You can get good images from your camera system regardless of the lighting, thanks in part to Glory's Fusion technology, which combines shots from different lenses to create the final result. However, sometimes this can lead to inconsistencies in the detail of certain images, such as finer textures like hair or leaves not being properly distinguished.

We also found strange results with the 100x zoom feature, where images looked good through the viewfinder but didn't work when shooting stills.

Nonetheless, this is a very powerful camera phone, approaching the heights of the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro and Vivo X90 Pro. With the improved screen and design, this is certainly a great smartphone.
