DJI is known for its innovation and pushing the drone market forward, but with the DJI Avata, the company took the opposite approach and compressed its features into a drone suitable for entry-level pilots.<\/p>\n

Last year, DJI added something new to its lineup with the release of the DJI FPV drone. This year, the DJI Avata, priced at $6,998, is an easier-to-use entry point into the first-person view (FPV) drone market, although it may not be considered a \"necessary\" or compelling addition to the lineup.<\/p>\n

Design and Quality<\/h1>\n

The DJI Avata's design brings a new experience to the DJI series, although it is not new in the drone world. It is made of strong plastic and offers enhanced safety when flying in tight spaces thanks to the built-in interconnected strut guards that give it great structural stability.<\/p>\n

DJI Avata's top exoskeleton body may feel fragile. With the battery installed, the overall structure feels fine; however, when the battery is not attached, the entire body feels like a \"cage\" that could easily break. To improve rigidity, I would like to see more designs with similar textures.<\/p>\n

That said, the DJI Avata appears to be a durable small drone: I simulated a crash and found it to be back in the air intact except for a few scratches and wear.<\/p>\n

The only complaint I have about the DJI Avata design is the placement of the SD card and USB-C ports. The DJI Avata drone has one advantage: it has 20GB of internal storage, which allows you to take off quickly or forget your SD card when you leave home without a problem.<\/p>\n

The DJI Avata's battery lasts 18 minutes in smooth flight, which is in line with DJI's expectations. However, as an FPV pilot who is keen on pushing the drone to its limits, I was able to get 5-6 minutes of flight time in full manual mode, which is acceptable, though not the best. Having enough time to have fun is pretty average as well.<\/p>\n

New Lens<\/h1>\n

Equipped with the latest Type 1\/1.7 sensor (9.5 x 7.6 x 5.7mm, 4:3 aspect ratio), the same size as in the Huawei P20 Pro, Canon G10 or Pentax Q7, the DJI Avata features powerful 48 megapixel stills with quality almost on par with the best sports cameras.<\/p>\n

DJI Avata's 155\u00b0 angle of view lens provides plenty of room for whatever you're shooting. It offers multiple resolution options, including 4K at 60 frames per second (FPS), 2.7K at 100FPS and 1080 at 120FPS, making it easy to find the right frame rate.<\/p>\n

The DJI Avata's color quality and sharpness meet expectations: clean, bright and sharp, especially in standard color mode. In addition, the D-Cinelike option is available for more advanced shooting to take full advantage of the lens' potential. Internal electronic image stabilization (EIS) allows for smoother shooting, a DJI specialty.<\/p>\n

While DJI Avata's Horizonsteady mode effectively keeps the camera level, Rocksteady mode works for all situations, including full manual mode with flip and roll, and also allows for full up and down tilt. However, when using the new prop shrouds, you will see those prop shrouds completely in the shot when the camera is looking fully down.<\/p>\n

For actual professional photography, the DJI Avata is almost completely incompetent, which is a shame, although I admit DJI probably didn't intend for it to be used for that purpose.<\/p>\n

Controls<\/h1>\n

DJI Avata can be used with either the traditional FPV controller or the new motion controller, equipped with DJI Motion controller, either in normal mode or in motion mode, to take smooth and clear photos.<\/p>\n

For me, DJI's choice to pair the motion controller with the DJI Avata is satisfying because it is a safe choice for beginners and the wrist movement is more intuitive.<\/p>\n

I prefer traditional flight controls, so I immediately bundled the DJI FPV controller and unlocked the full manual flight mode. This not only allows the drone to be fully fun, but also responds quickly and accurately for a satisfying flight experience.<\/p>\n

DJI Avata also has a \"turtle mode\" that automatically flips the drone when landing upside down, which is certainly a boon for situations where an upside down landing may occur. Unfortunately, I was unable to experience its effect in the test, which was disappointing.<\/p>\n

Clear vision<\/h1>\n

In addition to the DJI Avata, DJI also released a new head-mounted goggle, the DJI Goggles 2, which is my favorite goggle I've ever used.<\/p>\n

This, coupled with the new micro OLED display, allows users to experience the ultimate in comfort.<\/p>\n

The DJI Goggles 2 goggles provide superior vision so you can see every twig and blade of grass clearly during fast, low-altitude and aggressive flights for enhanced flight confidence. In addition, DJI Goggles 2 features O3+ transmission, providing 30ms transmission latency and 10km coverage, so you can enjoy a thrilling flight experience.<\/p>\n

Software<\/h1>\n

While the DJI Fly app is the standard software for controlling DJI Avata, DJI Goggles 2 has a more intuitive user interface and experience.<\/p>\n

Swipe down to record, swipe up to set the camera, swipe forward to the main menu; using the touchpad of your smartphone or laptop, you can also navigate with zero problems when using a headset. From the initial walkthrough to switching menus, I had no problems whatsoever. They also have a touchpad lock option to prevent inadvertent changes to settings when placing the headset.<\/p>\n

Entry-level FPV drones<\/h1>\n

The DJI Avata is a very good drone that won't let you down and has pretty good performance at a reasonable price of $6,998. Therefore, it can be widely used as a low-level entry-level product.<\/p>\n

DJI Avata has a flying machine with an excellent camera. It is also fast enough for most people in sport and manual modes. In addition, the DJI FPV has a top speed of 87 mph, while the DJI Avata has a top speed of 60 mph.<\/p>\n
