Another year, another iPhone, right? Not so fast. As Apple has shown with the iPhone Air in 2025 and the surprisingly full-featured regular iPhone 17, sometimes the company can surprise us with something new.

In addition to the ultra-premium foldable iPhone, Apple is also said to launch the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in the fall of 2026, and then, in a new plan adjustment, launch the base iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e in the spring of 2027.

iPhone 18/18 Pro Design: Three Models with Similar Designs

Currently, rumors suggest we will see a base iPhone 18, an iPhone 18 Pro, and an iPhone 18 Pro Max. This does not include rumored foldable iPhones and non-iPhone 18 models such as the second-generation Air.

These designs are said to be similar to the current iPhone 17 series. The base iPhone 18 will only have the smaller camera bump found on the iPhone 17, while the Pro and Pro Max will have a wider bump “platform” and three cameras. The screen sizes should be consistent with the current models’ 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays.

According to the leaker, one possible design change is the charging area on the back of the iPhone 18 Pro model. The ceramic shielding will reportedly be “slightly transparent,” but what that means is not entirely clear.

Rumors suggest the Pro model will come in three new colors: coffee, purple, and burgundy. The same rumor claims there might not be a black version, similar to the iPhone 17 Pro.

iPhone 18/18 Pro Camera: Aperture Upgrade

Apple just upgraded the iPhone 17’s camera system to a 48MP sensor, so there are unlikely to be any major hardware changes. One rumor we’ve heard about the iPhone 18’s camera system comes from the internet.

The report claims that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a camera with a mechanically adjustable aperture, similar to a DSLR camera. This will give users good control over background blur, but primarily, the ability to keep both the foreground and background sharp.

The telephoto lenses on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are also expected to have a larger overall aperture for taking sharper photos in low light.

iPhone 18/18 Pro: Dynamic Island

Since introducing the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple has not changed its size or shape, but some reports suggest that the camera cutout on the iPhone 18 may change.

Some claim that the camera will only have a pinhole cutout, with the entire Face ID component located under the display, but most reports suggest that these changes will be limited to the foldable iPhone or the 20th anniversary model.

However, it may still look different. Bloomberg claims that Apple will “shrink” the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 model, suggesting that some of the multiple sensors and transmitters required for Face ID will be located under the display or combined together.

iPhone 18/18 Pro Specifications: A20 Chip

The iPhone 18 series will feature a new A20 processor, possibly manufactured using TSMC’s new 2nm process. The A20 is rumored to use a new process called wafer-level multi-chip module (WMCM) packaging, which integrates RAM into the SoC’s package.

It is not yet clear what the benefits of doing so would be, but more tightly integrated RAM could mean higher memory bandwidth and lower RAM latency, or better power efficiency.

iPhone 18/18 Pro: Wireless Connectivity

While the iPhone Air comes with a more advanced version of Apple’s C1 modem (called the C1X), other iPhone 17 models still use Qualcomm wireless modems. The iPhone 18 series may change this.

We have learned that the iPhone 18, including the Pro and Pro Max, will feature a new C2 modem. It’s unclear what features it will offer, but it should certainly provide better performance and energy efficiency than the C1X, and may support high-speed millimeter-wave networks in addition to standard sub-6 networks.

Apple also introduced a local network chip for the first time in the iPhone 17 series; the N1 supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread networking. We haven’t heard anything about the upcoming N2 yet, and frankly, it probably won’t be released anytime soon.

Can Apple deliver the same “N1X” surprise as the C1X? It’s possible, but so far, rumors suggest that Apple will use the same N1 chip as the iPhone 17 to build the iPhone 18 series.

However, a report from a leaker claims that Apple is preparing to support 5G networks powered by satellite. While iPhones have offered satellite connectivity for emergencies for years, this would allow the iPhone 18 models to access the internet fully via satellite, not just for emergency services.

iPhone 18/18 Pro Release Date: To be released in stages

For some time now, there have been reports that Apple will change its release schedule. Reports suggest that in September 2026, Apple will only release high-end models: the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, a new foldable iPhone, and perhaps an updated iPhone Air.

This means the base model iPhone 18 will have to wait until spring 2027, and it’s reportedly launching alongside the iPhone 18e. This is a huge shift for Apple, meaning next year’s new iPhones will all be priced at 6999 yuan or higher.

iPhone 18/18 Pro Pricing: Wide Range

We haven’t seen any reports of pricing changes for the existing iPhone lineup in 2026. Currently, the iPhone 17 starts at 5999 yuan, the iPhone Air at 7999 yuan, and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at 8999 yuan and 9999 yuan respectively.

However, the arrival of the foldable iPhone could drastically change the pricing structure, with reports suggesting it will start at 19,999 yuan or higher.
