Hello, how are you? I am the original huh, click on the attention, more exciting content waiting for you!
Apple's second-generation AirPods Pro comes three years after the release of the first AirPods Pro, and they're a huge improvement in all the important ways.
The new AirPods Pro look the same as their predecessors, but the meaningful upgrades come in their performance. You can thank Apple's new H2 chip for significant improvements in sound quality, noise reduction, and battery life, as well as advanced features like "adaptive" transparency mode.
The first generation AirPods Pro was a great choice for Apple fans. But I think an upgrade is what makes the second generation AirPods Pro the most logical product. There are plenty of alternatives, but Apple's flagship wireless earbuds are now the best in their class, and if you own an iPhone, they're hard to beat.
Familiar charging box, easier to find
Other than a few minor tweaks to the placement of the microphone and vents, the new AirPods Pro are virtually identical to their predecessors. And if the original Pros fit you, so do these.
To cater to more ears, Apple is offering four earbuds in the box instead of three. The addition of the ultra-small silicone earbuds should please anyone who found the fit of the first generation AirPods Pro too small.
In terms of design, the bigger advantage is the charging case. The new U1 chip in the case allows "pinpointing" with "find my app", giving you visual directions and distance. The charging case also has a speaker that plays sound, so you can hear it too. There is also a new lanyard loop on the left edge of the case.
The charging case speaker also provides you with a low battery audio notification and a tone when you start charging or when pairing is complete. It's now waterproof and sweatproof, and as expected, it's also compatible with MagSafe.
Apple claims the second-generation AirPods Pro headphones have 6 hours of battery life on their own, and the MagSafe charging case can be recharged for up to 30 hours. This is an improvement over the original AirPods Pro, but is roughly the same as other premium wireless earbuds.
Impressive active noise cancellation and all-around better sound
The second generation AirPods Pro are the first pair of Apple headphones powered by the H2 chip, bringing improved sound and active noise cancellation, adaptive transparency mode, and the aforementioned longer battery life.
The first generation AirPods Pro was always at the bottom of the noise canceling performance chart compared to other premium wireless headphones. The second generation Pro changes all that. Apple claims the second generation AirPods Pro has twice the noise cancelling performance of the first generation, and I tend to believe them - the world is a much quieter place when you want it to be.
Apple's latest premium wireless headphones are very close to the top of the line in terms of active noise cancellation, and the second generation AirPods Pro include Apple's Adaptive Equalizer that automatically adjusts the sound they produce to the shape of your ears. This is a useful feature, but I'd like to see an option that allows users to adjust their own EQ settings.
The new AirPods Pro also comes with Apple's Personalized Spatial Audio (similar to Sony's 360 Reality Audio), which is a 360-degree surround sound format that provides an "immersive" listening experience. I can't say I've noticed much of a difference with the feature turned on or off.
But perhaps the best new feature, powered by Apple's H2 chip, is "adaptive" transparency, which automatically reduces the volume of noise when using transparent mode. Not only does it let sound in, but it also blocks loud noises like car horns. Great, the second-generation AirPods Pro are the only pair of headphones I've actually used Transparent Mode with any seriousness.
On-board volume control is a welcome addition
The original AirPods Pro came with pressure-sensitive controls for media playback control and switching between noise cancellation or transparent mode, but they notably lacked volume controls.
Apple solved the problem with the second-generation AirPods Pro by adding a touch sensor so you can adjust the volume by sliding the handle up or down. No more reaching for your phone to adjust the volume.
Despite the short stem, sliding up or down is surprisingly easy and intuitive: it's like you pinch the stem with your thumb and index finger and then simply slide it with your index finger.
Should you buy it?
The second-generation AirPods Pro is definitely recommended for the proverbial "most people," especially those who have multiple Apple devices in the Apple ecosystem.
In addition to seamless pairing and switching between iOS devices, the second generation AirPods Pro features features like Precision Find and more granular controls and options in AirPods settings that aren't available on other platforms, making it an obvious choice for Apple loyalists.
Even if you have a pair of original AirPods Pro, you'll notice a big difference.
