Choosing a drone for beginners can be a bit of a headache. There are a variety of options on the drone market, ranging from affordable models to easy-to-pilot quadcopters.

I've personally tested all the top beginner drones on the market and ranked my favorite models for you in the list below. Whatever your budget, my guide is designed to help you find the perfect flying companion.

Best overall beginner drone: the DJI Mini 3

DJI's latest mini model drone is considered to be the most beginner-friendly version so far. Like its two Mini predecessors, the DJI Mini 3 is a lightweight craft with a compact folding body, easy-to-use controls, and a useful auto-shooting mode.

Like those predecessors, it still doesn't have collision avoidance - a feature usually found on higher-end Pro versions. However, when tested, the DJI Mini 3 excels in terms of drone quality: I found that when piloted with the standard controller, its performance was comparable to that of the Mini 2's included controller. It only drifted slightly in windy conditions.

While it doesn't have the Log profile that DJI's high-end drones have, I found its 1/1.3-inch sensor (larger than the DJI Mini 2) capable of capturing excellent 4K /30p footage, and the overall results were very satisfying.

It's also unique in that it can rotate its 12MP sensor to capture social media content in portrait orientation. If you already own a DJI Mini 2, the reasons for upgrading may not be so obvious.

But if you're looking for a well-designed, fully-featured beginner drone, then this is certainly the best option you can find.

Best Budget Beginner Drone: Tello Tello

Tello's Tello is an affordable, compact and lightweight drone designed in collaboration with DJI, perfect for beginners to get to grips with the basics of flying. You can control it by running the Tello app and connecting it to your smartphone's Wi-Fi, but there's also the option of using a Bluetooth game controller, albeit with a more limited range of operation.

I was very pleased to find the Tello's flight performance very agile and lively in my tests. It helps you master the basic flying skills of a dual stick quadcopter.

It also comes with a stability sensor to minimize drift while hovering, and the 13-minute battery life is quite good. However, it should be noted that the flight range is somewhat limited, and even a light breeze can cause the drone to drift in the direction of the wind.

Additionally, the Tro's 720p camera performs mediocrely, and since there's no local storage feature, it will transfer all photos and videos directly to your phone, which may result in intermittent video when the Wi-Fi connection is spotty.

Overall, despite these caveats, the Tello Tello is still an excellent entry-level drone that performs basic tasks well and offers a better flying experience than other budget models. This craft is without a doubt a smart choice for the best budget beginner drone.

Best premium beginner drone: the DJI Mini 4 Pro

Following the DJI Mini 3 Pro, the Mini 4 Pro is more of an incremental upgrade. It follows the same f/1.7 aperture camera and 1/1.3-inch sensor, delivers 12MP / 48MP raw images and JPEGs, and delivers excellent image quality with minimal noise at up to ISO 6400 settings.

For video producers, the Mini 4 Pro brings a number of improvements, including 4K video capability at up to 100 fps, and D-Log M color profiles. These upgrades make the Mini 4 Pro the second drone in the professional-grade Mavic 3 series of models, where color consistency is easier to achieve.

The DJI Mini 4 Pro also has improved flight and safety features to make up for some of the camera improvements. It features omni-directional obstacle avoidance, compared to the Mini 3 Pro, which only has three-way obstacle avoidance, improved object tracking performance, and a wider transmission range of up to 20 kilometers, depending on your location and legal limits.

This sub-250 gram drone is a unique flying machine that performs very well compared to all the other drones in this guide.

Best Beginner FPV Drone: BetaFPV Cetus

If you're interested in trying your hand at flying FPV drones, then I'd recommend the BetaFPV Cetus X kit. As a complete kit, it comes with everything you need to fly in first person, including the remote control and a basic set of goggles.

The BetaFPV Cetus is more powerful than models like the Cetus Pro. I found it to have multiple flight modes and speed settings, which allows you to gradually improve your FPV flying skills.

Mastering manual flight and aerobatic modes took some time and patience during my test flights. Of course, crashes are unavoidable, and while the fuselage structure is designed to withstand impacts, it did show some damage during my tests. Still, as long as you're not prone to vertigo, the Cetus X offers an immersive flying experience.

I also noticed that there can be some interruptions and interferences during video transmission, and while the built-in DVR function can record flight footage, this isn't suitable for drones dedicated to still photography. Battery life was also a little disappointing at just five minutes.

Nonetheless, it has enough power to perform some simple free flight maneuvers and the kit comes with all the accessories. This is the best FPV kit for beginners in my opinion.
