The M3 MacBook Pro marks another triumph for Apple's chips in computing, marking the beginning of the company's venture into making its own computing chips three years ago. As the second MacBook Pro in 2023, it comes with an even more powerful chipset for gaming performance.

Probably the most striking part of the M3 MacBook Pro lineup is that Apple is putting a traditional M3 chip in the 14-inch MacBook Pro body, which spells the end of the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

These are undoubtedly some of my favorite laptops and by far the top of the line MacBooks. however, they come with a pretty hefty price tag, so let's take a look at the pros and cons below.

Strengths: M3 MacBook Pro demonstrates superior performance beyond expectations

The M3 MacBook Pro often prides itself on its superior performance. In my daily use tests over the past week, both M3 MacBook Pros performed admirably and almost without flinching when opening every macOS and iOS application I regularly use.

Notably, the M3 Pro and Max are designed to meet the extreme demands of 4K movie editing loads, rendering high-resolution 3D visuals, and the needs of medical, coding, and architectural workers.

Our benchmarks show off the power of Apple's chip, with its multi-core score on Geekbench 6 more than double that of the Dell XPS 15.

In terms of year-over-year improvement, the M3 MacBook Pro scored about 18% to 20% higher than the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro in the Geekbench 5 benchmark.

Strengths: Both the 14-inch and 16-inch versions exhibit excellent battery life performance

Happily, after our looping 4K video battery test, the M3 MacBook Pro lasted very consistently, at least up to about 10 hours.

The M3 MacBook Pro offers a 4-hour improvement over its M2 series counterpart. Both versions last at least 1 hour and 25 minutes longer than the Dell XPS 15.

What has changed?The M3 is the world's first computer chip from Apple based on 3nm technology designed to improve energy efficiency. This significant improvement in battery life provides users with a longer, hassle-free experience.

Strengths: Mac computers finally show impressive gaming performance

Over the past year or two, the suitability of Macs for gaming has been a hotly debated topic. Among MacBook computer users, it is widely believed that Apple computers are better suited for office work and less suited for gaming, almost as a kind of "quit gaming" magic weapon.

And now we seem to be at a turning point in that debate. Baldur's Gate 3 has become one of the hottest games of 2023, coming to the Mac just two months after its release on the PC. 4K with Ultra graphics enabled looked great on the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 Max chip I tested.

To see how other well-known games perform on the Mac, I also tried out Resident Evil Village. It ran perfectly at the same resolution on a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

However, on the M3-based 14-inch MacBook Pro, performance was poor when I tried to game using the same UHD settings. Once I switched to 1080p, the game became smoother at lower resolutions.

Benchmarks confirmed the differences I saw on screen, with the M3 Max MacBook Pro outperforming the M3 MacBook Pro by more than 200% in Geekbench 6 OpenCL scores, and nearly 300% in the Tomb Raider: Shadow of the Darkness benchmarks.The Dell XPS 15's OpenCL scores were similar to those of the M3 Max MacBook Pro, but its Tomb Raider performance is closer to the regular M3 MacBook Pro.

This is just the beginning of AAA quality Mac gaming. But the question still remains, "Will people play games on their Macs?" For Mac users with a keen interest in gaming, they can now better experience modern masterpieces and are no longer limited to playing small games on their phones via Apple Arcade. We'd like to see major video games come to the Mac at the same time as other platforms, but only time will tell.

Benefits: Same great display, ports, and design

When it comes to the display, I can confidently tell you that I was delighted by Apple's updated darker tones. Deep Sky Black, a silver alternative to the M3 Pro and M3 Max-based MacBook Pros, presents an almost vanishing hue.

Despite Apple's new anodizing trick to design this new finish designed to minimize fingerprint retention, I can tell you that you can still get fingerprints on a Deep Space Black laptop. Because I've experienced it firsthand. However, it doesn't seem to leave fingerprints as easily compared to the midnight blue MacBook Air.

As for the rest of the M3 MacBook Pro? Its Liquid Retina XDR display isn't OLED, but it's still extremely gorgeous. As I watched a series of climactic stunts in Mission Impossible 4, I noticed that the trees and water around Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell took on multiple shades of green and blue as they ran. Living on top of a falling train. This super-sharp 3024 x 1964 panel perfectly renders Cruise's expression as he struggles inside the falling car.

For those who use a Mac and are looking for a great laptop, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros are simply a blessing, starting with their scissor-comfort keyboards, which feel extremely comfortable to type on.

The end of the Touch Bar also means the return of physical function keys on all MacBook Pros, which is very welcome. Additionally, every member of the current MacBook Pro lineup offers HDMI out and an SD memory card reader, as Apple removed the only two USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the 13-inch model.

These ports are probably the main reason many people upgrade from their MacBook Air. They help reduce the reliance on USB-C hubs so you don't have to check to see if you have one with you every time you leave the house.

Best of all, you'll also be able to enjoy the same great six-speaker sound system as last year's 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.The sound on the MacBook Pro is simply amazing. You also get the same 1080p webcam that lets you look great in plenty of light and see clearly in dimly lit rooms.

Cons: Quite expensive

As much as I rave about the MacBook Pro, I have to admit that it's quite pricey. Yes, the $10,499 15-inch MacBook Air is for those who are satisfied with their daily needs.

But if you want a large-screen laptop with features like faster performance or more powerful ports, you'll pay almost twice as much for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, with prices starting at $1999.

Even if you agree with the smaller screen of the 14-inch model, its starting price is an expensive $12,999. This price is even more thought-provoking when you consider that the Apple M3 MacBook Pro only offers 8GB of RAM by default.

While I love the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip, I wish I didn't have to spend so much money to have my favorite laptop.

Cons: M3 MacBook Pro lacks some features

While I'm glad to see the 13-inch MacBook Pro is a thing of the past thanks to its fancy OLED Touch Bar and poor port selection, not everything is perfect. The new M3 MacBook Pro that replaces it still compromises in some areas.

The regular M3 MacBook Pro comes with only dual Thunderbolt/USB 4 USB-C ports, while the M3 Pro model offers three Thunderbolt 4 ports.

The former may be enough for some users, but it can be confusing in the MacBook Pro lineup-especially when the entry-level M3 MacBook Pro can only connect to one external monitor, while the M3 Pro can connect to two. Users may want those who need two monitors to have a better idea of what they need, but it's hard to assume.

While the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro is by far the most affordable MacBook Pro with a Liquid Retina XDR display, it's also more expensive than its 13-inch predecessor.

However, it does give you a bigger, better screen, twice the internal SSD storage (from 256GB to 512GB), and many other minor upgrades such as a full HD webcam, a six-speaker sound system, an HDMI output port, and an SD memory card reader.

Summary

The new M3 MacBook Pro is a compelling, high-performance laptop that has caught the attention of previous-generation users and made them consider upgrading. While overall performance is a key consideration, I'm impressed with the state of constant improvement on the Mac.

Sure, competing Windows laptops like the Dell XPS 15 have some advantages in terms of starting price, RAM, and so on, but the 14-inch MacBook Pro beats it in terms of battery life, and the benchmarks are in Apple's favor. Of course, users can always consider the 15-inch MacBook Air, which starts at a lower price than the 14-inch MacBook Pro, but it has fewer port options and is also a generation behind in chips until Apple inevitably upgrades it.

For those looking for a portable MacBook with speed and more port options, the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro is a good choice. But if you're after a 4K gaming experience or need to get serious creative work done, then consider the M3 Pro or, for better performance and future readiness, the M3 Max.
