Hello, how are you? I am the original huh, click on the attention, more exciting content waiting for you!
When looking for a smartwatch for winter swimming, the most obvious feature you need is water resistance. Are you pacing the pool or playing in the open water? Not all smartwatches are waterproof, so check the specs before choosing.
Beyond that, it all depends on how much information you need or which ecosystem you prefer. Here are my choices for both.
Garmin Venu 2 Plus: Garmin's most comprehensive smartwatch
The Garmin Venu 2 Plus is the company's best smartwatch. It includes all the same features as the Garmin Venu 2, including Garmin's impressive fitness tracking suite, music storage for about 650 songs, and more.
It also adds the ability to make and receive calls from your wrist and access your phone's voice assistant. For swimmers, its bright touchscreen display is perfect for viewing your real-time stats.
Swim metrics available on the Garmin Venu 2 Plus include Distance, Pace, Stroke Count, Calories and Swolf, which is a measure of swimming efficiency.
Other tools include stroke detection, underwater heart rate monitoring, and further analysis in the Garmin Connect app. Of course, if you want to save some money, the previous generation offers the same swim-specific highlights, but you'll only have to give up a few smartwatch features.
Apple Watch Ultra: the best smartwatch for iOS users to swim with
The Apple Watch Ultra offers the same great swimming features as older Apple Watch models. They even include the new kickboard detection feature added via watchOS 9.
The Apple Watch Ultra also provides swimmers with efficiency statistics through SWOLF scores and can automatically determine the stroke you are swimming.
What sets Apple Watch Ultra apart is its MIL-STD-810H specification titanium body, which is certified WR100 water resistant and EN13319 dive rated.
In the Depth app, users will take advantage of the smartwatch's depth gauge, which can read water pressure up to 40 meters below the surface, as well as water temperature readings, and Apple has even launched the Oceanic Plus app, which provides even more dive data.
Additionally, the Apple Watch Ultra is a large with tons of space for viewing your stats underwater. The touchscreen reactivates once you're on land, where you can view a variety of metrics, including distance, pace and lap length.
With Apple's extensive library of third-party apps, you can also download additional tools for more in-depth analysis. All Apple Watches also automatically waterproof lock your screen whenever you start a swim workout.
Apple Watch Series 8: Apple's More Affordable Option
If the Apple Watch Ultra is a bit out of budget, the Apple Watch Series 8 is a great option. You won't find the same durability specs or diving capabilities as above, but you will find the same robust set of swim training features. The lineup also offers several sport modes for triathlon training sessions.
Outside the pool, the Apple Watch Series 8 is one of the best smartwatches on the market, with unrivaled app support and seamless iPhone integration.
The latest model comes with a new temperature sensor for more insight into sleep tracking as well as a more advanced cycle tracking tool. It also adds new crash detection.
If you're an iPhone user looking for a powerful fitness smartwatch and a full smartwatch experience, Apple Watch Series 8 is for you.
Battery life on watches is still a sore spot for this generation, but with the new low-power mode, users can extend the amount of time they can use the watch between charges.
Garmin Epix 2: Feature-Packed Garmin for Open Water
Garmin's Epix 2 is a true high-end smartwatch. At its simplest, it's the Fenix 7 with a touchscreen AMOLED display rather than a MIP display.
It has all the latest and greatest features of the Fenix 7 series, including Connect IQ On Device, and more activity modes than you can delve into. If you can afford it, it's the best swimming smartwatch Garmin has to offer.
In a swimming pool (or lake or ocean), the Epix Gen 2 will track a variety of advanced metrics including length, intervals, stroke counts, Swolf scores and more.
It also calculates your critical swimming speed, or the speed you can maintain without exhausting yourself. In addition, you can record underwater heart rate data directly on the device or pair it with a chest strap for more accurate data.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro: the best Wear OS smartwatch for swimming
Another great place for a pool or open water is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. As one of the top watches running Wear OS 3 right now, it's also our pick for the best smartwatch for Android users.
For starters, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro offers premium construction, including IP68 and 5ATM water and pressure ratings, as well as a MIL-STD-810G endurance rating.
It also features a new D-strap buckle closure to enhance the look. Under the hood, users will find accurate health and fitness tracking, built-in GPS, and more.
As you log laps, the smartwatch's AMOLED display will show metrics including distance, stroke count, lap time, and swim in the Samsung Health app.
As with the Apple Watch, you can also download third-party swimming-centered apps if you want to go deeper.
Fitbit Versa 3: The Best Fitbit Smartwatch for Swimming
The Versa 3 won't offer the most detailed experience for swimmers, but it's our top pick if you're committed to the Fitbit brand. While the updated Versa 4 is now available, the latest generation drops many of the features that we think make the line more comprehensive.
For example, you won't find third-party application support on newer models. With this in mind, we recommend sticking with Versa 3 for now.
Once you start swimming, you can view lap length, total distance and workout duration directly on your watch. If you're still wearing your first swim cap, that's probably all you're interested in. Outside the pool, you can use features like voice assistant and phone call support.
As usual, the Sense line is technically the best Fitbit has to offer, but we don't think its extra health sensors are worth the extra money.
What's more, as far as swimming is concerned, both smartwatches have the same tracking capabilities. If you're opting for a more expensive smartwatch, we'd recommend the Fitbit Sense over the newer Sense 2. Like the Versa 4, the latest Sense doesn't offer the same value as its predecessor.
