For most people, the best Mac laptop is the 13-inch MacBook Air with Apple's M1 processor. It's not the latest MacBook Air, but it's cheaper than the latest model and fast enough for what most people do with their computers - web browsing, document processing, coding, and light photo and video editing.

For a better screen, extra charging ports, a better webcam, and a slightly faster processor, I'd recommend the new MacBook Air with the M2 processor as our upgrade choice.

Apple MacBook Air (M1, 2020): a well-balanced MacBook

We recommend the basic MacBook Air, which has enough speed, memory, and storage to handle most everyday computer tasks.

Apple's new M1 processor is much faster than the low-power Intel processor in the previous MacBook Air, and its battery life is so long you'll hardly need to charge it during the day.

Unlike previous MacBook Air models, the M1 version doesn't require a cooling fan, so it stays quiet even when you're maxing out the processor by exporting videos or playing games.

Like its predecessor, the M1 version of the Air includes a much-improved keyboard with a deeper, more satisfying feel and greater reliability than the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models released between 2016 and 2019.

The Air only includes two USB-C ports (with Thunderbolt 3 support) and a headphone jack - but Thunderbolt docking stations and USB-C hubs and adapters are common enough and inexpensive enough that this is no longer as big an issue as it used to be is.

The Air also omits the MacBook Pro's (useful in some cases but largely unnecessary) Touch Bar, replacing it with a row of physical function keys and a separate Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Apple MacBook Air (M2, 2022): sleek design and better camera

If you're on a budget, the M2 MacBook Air has some major updates over the slightly older M1 model that I think make this laptop feel better to use.

The 2022 M2 MacBook Air has a brighter display so you can see out more clearly on sunny days, and a higher-resolution webcam so you can look a little sharper on video calls.

Apple has also added a MagSafe port, which allows the magnetic charging cable to stick securely to your MacBook Air and prevents damage to the cable if you trip over it.

However, this laptop is not for people who edit photos, videos or work with large media files. My tests found that even after a minute of exporting videos or batch editing photos, the laptop got hot to the touch, to the point where using a laptop is uncomfortable.

But for everyday work tasks, browsing the web, watching movies, and even playing App Store games, M2 MacBook Air offers a host of significant upgrades over its predecessor.
