Samsung has pretty much perfected the foldable phone over the past few years, and its upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is expected to be better than the current models in its flagship foldable lineup.
We don't expect to see the phone until much later in 2023, so there aren't too many rumors yet - but we've heard a few flashes, and you'll find them all below, along with a possible release date and price on the phone.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 release date and price
No word yet on when we can expect to see the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, but with Samsung's past release dates.
So, it seems likely that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be released in early to mid-August. So our best guess for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 release date is Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
As for the price, there's no word on that either, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 starts at $18,999, so it could be similarly priced.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 News
So far, only a handful of real Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 leaks have been made, the first pointing to a foldable phone with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.
This will be the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipsets that power many of the best Android phones in 2022, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. So either a Gen 2 or a Plus version of it always seems possible.
The same source also hinted that the phone will come with a triple-lens rear camera with a 50MP primary sensor. That's exactly what the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has - the other two sensors are a 12MP ultra-wide sensor and a 10MP telephoto sensor - so that probably means not too many camera upgrades.
Secondly, the phone apparently features a teardrop hinge that allows the sides of the device to lay completely flat. In theory, this will improve the durability of the foldable product. This has been backed up by a second report which adds that the phone will be waterproof.
Third, a recent report suggests the Fold 5 will be available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions, the same storage options Samsung chose on the Z Fold 4.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Summary
For Samsung to make the ultimate foldable phone, it needs to do five key things, which we've highlighted below.
1. Same camera as Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
The cameras on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 aren't bad at all, but they're not Samsung's best, even though it's the company's most expensive phone. Anyone who can save on the cost of the Z Fold 4 probably wants the best, and on the front end of the camera, it just doesn't do that.
So, for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, expect the phone to match the camera configuration of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which, based on past form, will probably have the company's best snapshot.
2. No obvious creases
As impressive as Samsung's foldable screen is, the company hasn't broken the crease; it's visible and can be felt when you swipe across the display.
It's no big deal, and most people will soon get used to it, but it's a flaw on an already great screen, so we'd like to see Samsung succeed in hiding it on the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
3. lower price
One of the biggest problems with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is its price, as it's one of the most expensive phones on the planet - the iPhone 14 Pro Max almost seems cheap by comparison.
Given the screen size and the technology involved, it's no surprise that the price is high, but if this foldable lineup is to truly go mainstream, then the price will need to come down, and we hope Samsung starts lowering it with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
4. Faster charging
Most Samsung phones are slow to charge, and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is no exception. It tops out at 25W wired or 15W wireless, both of which are well below other flagships like the 150W OnePlus 10T or 120W Xiaomi 12 Pro.
We don't expect or need Samsung to reach that level of charging power, but we would at least like to see the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 break the difference and deliver about 60W-80W of power.
5. Larger battery
In addition to faster charging, expect a larger battery in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. The battery in the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is 4,400mAh, an average size at best, and actually smaller than many conventional phones.
But given that it has a huge foldable screen, it could use an exceptionally large battery. So we're at least hoping for a 5,000mAh battery in the Z Fold 5 - the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has one, so it's not too much to ask.
