Hello, how are you? I am the original huh, click on the attention, more exciting content waiting for you!
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is an ultra-expensive phone starting at $12,999 (for the 512GB version), the same list price as last year's model, known for its foldable screen that can be flipped open like a tablet or tapped closed like a tablet. An ordinary but super thick regular smartphone with a super narrow screen.
The big difference in this year's model is a new hinge that Samsung calls the Flex Hinge. This new mechanism allows the phone to fold almost flat. A closer look reveals that there still seems to be a very, very slight taper and there is still a very slight gap, but this is a huge improvement over the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4.
By comparison, the official specs for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 show a width of 15.8 millimeters (mm) at the hinge and 14.2 mm at the tapered end. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is not 100% flat.
It turned out to be 13.6 mm thick at the hinge and 13.2 mm thick at the other end. We're picking nits and blowing off steam, but if you're looking for answers, here they are.
Weight and width reduction
When unfolded, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 shrinks to 6.1 mm in width from 6.3 mm in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and weighs 253 grams, down from 263 grams.
In comparison, Samsung's Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is 234 grams and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is 240 grams, so the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 has reached the weight of a traditional smartphone, at least if we're talking about the largest flagship model. That is the first generation Samsung Galaxy Z Fold weighs 276 grams.
Other foldable devices with a similar form factor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold include the OPPO Find N2, which weighs 233 grams and 237 grams for the glass-backed model, and the Huawei Mate X3, which weighs 239 grams (and is also thinner, at 5.3 millimeters).
Is 253 grams light enough? I use a phone that weighs 200 grams without a case, so the Fold5 will take some getting used to, and you'll be asking yourself if using a heavier-than-usual phone on a daily basis is worth the larger folding screen.
The Flex Hinge is also an important development for Samsung as they claim it not only allows for a flatter profile but also increased durability. Samsung also says that the brightness of the internal screen is now 1,750 nits, which is 30% brighter than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4.
Battery life, camera
Another item I'm hoping for: a bigger battery. It has the same 4,400 mAh battery as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, but software and processor improvements should make it last longer. With frequent use, some video editing and a lot of video shooting, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 seems to have a hard time lasting a day.
Even with moderate use, the battery power seems to drain faster than I expected. So far, that's been my brief experience. We'll see if this is indeed the case through longer tests.
My favorite home screen use case so far is how it makes video editing easier because of all the extra screen space. But if the battery can't keep up ......
As for the camera, it sports the same 50 MP (f/1.8, optical stabilization) main camera, 10 MP sensor with 3x zoom, 12 MP ultra wide angle, 10 MP selfie camera on the front screen, and 4 MP built-in camera under the display as the Fold4. It also has up to 30x digital zoom. Video stabilization is also solid based on our use to date.
It's a broadly similar array to the rest of Samsung's flagship lineup, specifically the Samsung Galaxy S23+, and a step below the top-of-the-line Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has the option to use a 200MP primary camera, 10x optical zoom, and 100x digital zoom.
If a camera is your top priority, then the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is still your best bet, at least for Samsung fans.
One wonders if one day the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold variant (Fold Ultra?) will eventually match the Ultra models in the S lineup.
ultimate
As expected, you'll get the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform and 12GB of RAM with storage options of 512GB and 1TB.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is certainly not for everyone, mainly because of the price. But if you've been in the target market, it's a great time to enter the folding market.
The improvements in the hinge and the reduction in weight and width may seem small, but these do make the phone a more sophisticated product than ever before.
