Apple recently unveiled four brand new iPhone models, and this launch brings with it some exciting features. While the standard model carries over some of the additional features from last year's Pro version, this year's iPhone 15 Pro Max stands out from the iPhone 15 Pro by introducing some unique camera configurations that surpass all previous offerings in the lineup.

However, even with these great new devices, Apple still has some issues that need to be addressed, or should be addressed in next year's flagship iPhone. According to rumors, this will be the iPhone 16 Pro Max, unless Apple takes up some of the rumored suggestions to name it the "iPhone 16 Ultra".

Some preliminary information about Apple's 2024 smartphones has now surfaced. Here, we'll round up the news and take a look at what the future might hold.

Price may be higher than iPhone 15 Pro Max

According to Apple's regular release schedule, new iPhones are usually launched in the second half of the year and go on sale the following Friday. If we refer to the price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the base 256GB version is priced at $9,999. Higher capacity versions of 512GB and 1TB are also available in the range.

As a result, I expect the iPhone 16 Pro Max to have a similar release date to past models, and the price may be relatively high. It could break the 10,000 mark, and in fact, one report suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro Max's camera upgrades could have an impact on the price.

iPhone 16 Pro Max or iPhone 16 Ultra?

Prior to the release of the iPhone 15 lineup, there was widespread speculation as to whether or not we'd see Apple introduce an "Ultra" product in the 2023 lineup. After all, rivals such as Samsung, Motorola and Xiaomi have already adopted the suffix in their lineups.

However, so far, no iPhone 15 Ultra rumors have surfaced, so naturally, speculation about the iPhone Ultra must now turn to Apple's iPhone 16 lineup, which is expected to launch in late 2024.

At this point, it's unclear whether the iPhone 16 Ultra will replace the Pro Max, or whether it will coexist with it. But if Apple opts for the latter, this will raise the price ceiling on the iPhone lineup, giving the company the opportunity to raise prices for its top-of-the-line, most exceptional iPhones.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: Design and display expectations

While we don't have a full spec sheet yet, the design of the iPhone 16 Pro Max is already being discussed. One analyst's report suggests that the Face ID system was initially moved to the iPhone 14 Pro lineup's "Dynamic Island," which is embedded underneath the screen pixels, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will retain only the front-facing camera.

As for the screen, Apple managed to shrink the bezels of the iPhone 15 Pro model, but one leading analyst predicts that the overall screen size will increase next year. If true, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will pack a 6.9-inch screen, compared to the current 15 Pro Max's 6.7-inch screen, making it the largest iPhone yet.

The analyst also said that Apple could eventually ditch the 19.5:9 aspect ratio used in previous generations of iPhones in favor of a 19.6:9 aspect ratio, which would make the iPhone 16 Pro line taller and narrower.

Another source also mentions a larger screen size for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, so this sounds likely. The final rumor suggests that Apple will use a new "Multi-Lens Array" (MLA) AMOLED panel to improve its already bright display.

The MLA technology is reportedly used in the 2024 iPhone Pro lineup, which helps LG improve the brightness of its TV panels, while Samsung already uses MLA AMOLED screens in products like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

However, the trade-off for MLA technology is that viewing angles may be reduced and the screen will cost more. If Apple chooses this path, it could affect the final price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Additionally, we can make some educated guesses about the iPhone 16 Pro Max design. For starters, the action buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have replaced the long-standing mute/ring switch, a design that will likely carry over to next year's model.

Interestingly, while last year's rumors mentioned a redesign of the volume and power buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro, the latest information suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro Max and its siblings will be getting a new solid-state "Capture" button instead. While the exact purpose of this new button has not been revealed, its name suggests that it could be related to the iPhone 16's camera feature.

Adding a new button across the iPhone 16 lineup was also mentioned by another source, who added that the action button will apparently be solid-state as well, while the power and volume buttons will remain unchanged.

Similarly, the USB-C port introduced this year and the new lightweight titanium frame are expected to make another appearance. However, we're hoping Apple will introduce more interesting colors on next year's Pro Max, as this year's lineup looks relatively dull.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: Anticipated Camera Technology

The camera hardware of the past two iPhone generations represents a significant advancement in the series, with the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max introducing a new 48MP primary sensor (versus the previous 12MP), adding new photography technologies such as 2x lossless zoom through sensor cropping.

Now, looking at this year's iPhone lineup, in addition to the beefed up 48MP primary sensor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max also introduces Apple's first ever periscope telephoto lens with a whopping 5x zoom. However, some sources suggest that its successor will push the limits even further.

According to a report from a reputable tipster, the iPhone 16 Pro Max's camera could challenge Samsung in one key area, namely that next year's model could come with an "ultra-telephoto" camera. That means the phone will have a focal length range of 300 millimeters or more, surpassing the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is currently the main competitor in this area.

Apple may use an extended prism design for the sensor or a folding prism as a low-profile camera module to achieve this. Alternatively, the company might combine its existing prism technology with sensor cropping technology to achieve this impressive ultra-telephoto zoom range.

Another rumor claims that Apple may use thinner molded glass to help achieve this extended zoom in the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This means that whichever method is used, the final lens will be smaller than the other methods.

If the iPhone 16 Pro Max's main sensor maintains the current 15 Pro/Pro Max's 24mm focal length, along with a 6x telephoto camera (with a 150mm focal range), and a larger sensor, this would allow for a 2x zoom sensor crop, resulting in a magical 300mm zoom.

As mentioned earlier, it's unclear if this ultra-telephoto camera will be coming to the iPhone 16 Pro Max or the iPhone 16 Ultra, or if they're one and the same. But either way, we're looking forward to this technology making its way to the iPhone.

In addition to the Remote Snapshotter, Apple may also be expanding its use of Sony's camera hardware, which could include the stacked Exmor T for Mobile sensor technology used in the Xperia 1 V and Xperia 5 V.

By rearranging the internal layout of the sensor, Sony has been able to create smartphone cameras that capture more light at the same resolution; analysts say that the iPhone 16 Pro models will also receive this camera sensor upgrade. Additionally, the analysts emphasized that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will get more key upgrades, including a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: Expected Specs and Features

Despite all the leaks about the design and camera tech of the iPhone 16 Pro lineup that have been widely circulating, the rumor mill has so far failed to provide information about other internal details. As such, we can only make educated guesses to fill in the gaps in this information based on what Apple has done in the past.

When the iPhone 15 Pro Max debuted, it packed 8GB of RAM, which is more than the 6GB of its predecessors. As such, it's reasonable to assume that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will continue this trend by supporting the successor to Apple's latest A17 Pro chipset, which debuted in the 15 Pro Max - likely to be the A18 Pro SoC.

In fact, the latest leak specifically mentions the A18 Pro SoC with 8GB of RAM that comes with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.

The same source also claimed that the phones will support Wi-Fi 7 and come with a new 5G modem that offers faster data speeds than current models.

As for the newly introduced USB-C connection on this model, it seems unlikely that Apple will change the charging or data transfer speeds after only one year.
