One of the most striking changes is the new circular camera bump, which OPPO calls the "cosmic ring," reminiscent of the design on Huawei's Pocket S, which was released late last year.

Another new feature is the Alerts slider, which makes it easy to toggle the phone's ring, mute and vibrate modes. This change struck me as very useful and a thoughtful improvement for users who often need to adjust the volume of their phone.

As for the edges, the OPPO Find N3 has softer curved edges compared to the square design of the N2 Flip. In terms of body color, OPPO Find N3 comes in fresh black, light pink and gold tones, while the light pink body looks subtle and elegant.

Various brand logos are covered around the body, including the Hasselblad logo on the camera's bulge and the Oppo logo printed on the back. These logos give the overall design a busy and sophisticated look.

Unfortunately, OPPO has retained the raised protective screen design. The raised edges of the screen can be felt when sliding the screen with your finger, and these details ruin the elegance of an otherwise impressive design. It's worth noting that this design is also present on the N2 Flip.

It's also worth noting that the OPPO Find N3 Flip has an IPX4 rating for splash resistance, which is lower than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. This rating indicates that the phone has some splash resistance and is able to withstand rain, but does not include dust protection. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a higher IPX8 rating that allows for immersion in water, but again, does not include a dust protection rating.

OPPO Find N3 Flip's protective screen is more practical

However, when the user moves in the other direction, it's a very different story. When running an app on the inner screen and folding the phone up, the overlay screen turns off or stays on for a few seconds and then quickly dims, depending on the settings the user chooses.

Of the foldable flip phones on the market, none have yet to truly deliver an uninterrupted experience from the inner screen to the outer screen. Users are still expecting OPPO to improve the connectivity of apps and software in future versions of the phone.

In addition, the cover screen does not support full keyboard functionality. This means that users won't be able to enter information on the cover screen like they can on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. Although this is understandable as OPPO's vertical cover screen is designed with more limited space and a narrower display to support coherent sentence input.

OPPO Find N3 Flip's inner screen, creases, and hinges

Upon first seeing the 6.8-inch AMOLED interior screen, I could barely notice any creases. However, by maneuvering the phone at a specific angle in a bright environment, I eventually noticed the faint presence of a crease. However, in everyday usage scenarios such as watching videos, reading emails, or scrolling through my news feed, this crease was barely noticeable and did not negatively impact my experience in any way.

The internal display is 75.78 mm (2.98 inches) wide, which is wider than comparable flip phones. While this width makes one-handed use a bit difficult, it helps the OPPO Find N3 Flip provide a similar experience to standard straight phones.

This wide inner screen provides an enjoyable experience for reading news, browsing social media and watching videos. In addition, Oppo has taken full advantage of the camera app's folding design, enabling users to use the lower half as a portable tripod, adding even more utility.

OPPO Find N3 Flip has four cameras

OPPO has not only focused on the screen software and the hinge, but has also upgraded its camera module.The OPPO Find N3 Flip comes with a 50 MP primary camera, a 48 MP ultra wide angle camera and a new 32 MP telephoto camera. Compared to the N2 Flip, the ultra wide-angle camera has a higher resolution and a new telephoto lens has been added.

While I didn't have a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 on hand, I was able to compare images from the OPPO Find N3 Flip to photos from the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and overall, I preferred the photos taken with the Apple phone.

This again highlights the fact that flip phones typically have more average camera performance compared to traditional straight phones. This is precisely the trade-off faced by products with a flip phone design, subject to its unique physical and engineering constraints.

Battery and performance of the OPPO Find N3 Flip

The OPPO Find N3 Flip packs a 4,000 mAh battery that is enough to support a full day of moderate usage on a single charge. The battery was able to perform well in my daily applications including making phone calls, checking emails, watching videos and browsing the internet.

Even when the battery eventually runs out, the charging speed is quite satisfactory, thanks largely to the 44-watt power adapter that comes in the box. In 30 minutes, the OPPO Find N3 Flip's battery was more than half charged (58%), while it can be fully charged within an hour.

I also conducted a battery life test by watching a video, scrolling through social media and taking a video call in 45 minutes. During this time, the battery charge dropped from 1001 TP2T to 891 TP2T. in comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 had a charge drop of 101 TP2T in the same test.

The OPPO Find N3 Flip runs on the Mediatek Dimensity 9200 chipset. In my daily use, it performed well and was able to smoothly handle daily tasks such as light gaming, video watching and news reading.

However, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powered by the Galaxy chip of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 surpassed it in the performance test.
