The iPhone 17 is the most significant upgrade to Apple’s base iPhone in years. While there are still good reasons to pay extra for the iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max, most of these upgrades are no longer necessary for the average user.

Much of our enthusiasm stems from this brand-new 6.3-inch display. It’s slightly larger than the iPhone 16’s 6.1-inch panel and boasts a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, which should make it easier to see outdoors.

Most importantly, this is a “ProMotion” display, meaning its maximum refresh rate has finally jumped from 60Hz to a faster 120Hz. The refresh rate is also adaptive, dropping to 1Hz to save power when the phone is idle. This is because it’s an always-on display.

The cameras have also been upgraded. The front camera has been upgraded from a 12-megapixel sensor to a sharper 18-megapixel sensor, and the rear ultra-wide-angle camera has been upgraded from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels, helping to capture sharper texture details in various lighting conditions. You can now also use both the front and rear cameras simultaneously for video recording.

The iPhone 17 starts at the same price as the iPhone 16, but its default storage capacity has been increased to 256GB—twice that of its predecessor. This model is powered by the new A19 chip. Apple claims up to 30 hours of video playback battery life, an 8-hour improvement over its predecessor. This figure may be somewhat optimistic, and is roughly the same as the 33-hour battery life claimed by the iPhone 17 Pro.

This model supports faster 25W wireless charging, and Apple claims it can charge to 50% in 20 minutes when used with wired fast charging. The upgraded “Ceramic Shield 2” glass panel on the front also offers enhanced scratch resistance.

All of this is reflected in a design that remains beautiful, sturdy, and well-proportioned, featuring an aluminum frame, sufficiently functional Camera Control and Action buttons, and a range of elegant color options.

Best-performing iPhone models overall: Apple iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

If your budget allows, the 6.3-inch iPhone 17 Pro and 6.9-inch iPhone 17 Pro Max are Apple’s culmination of smartphone masterpieces—these pocket computers incorporate all of the company’s top technologies, making price-performance ratio irrelevant at this point.

Compared to the standard iPhone 17, the main upgrades are focused on the camera and battery. While the base model also features a 48MP main camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera, the Pro models exclusively have a dedicated telephoto lens, making them more capable in zoom photography.

The 17 Pro and Pro Max feature a 48MP lens that supports 4x optical zoom and maintains near-optical image quality even at up to 8x zoom. The Pro models also have a larger sensor for the main camera, resulting in better low-light performance and support for several professional-grade features, such as ProRAW shooting or 4K Dolby Vision video recording at up to 120 frames per second.

Regarding battery life, Apple states that the 17 Pro offers up to 33 hours of video playback, while the 17 Pro Max boasts an impressive 39 hours. However, our testing results show that the 17 Pro can generally last for more than a day, while the Pro Max approaches two days.

The larger battery makes the Pro model slightly thicker and noticeably heavier than the standard version, but its design still maintains a proper premium feel. Apple uses a two-tone design, embedding the robust “Ceramic Shield” glass back into the aluminum metal frame, with the raised “platform” area at the top housing the camera module and most of the phone’s internal components.

Less controversial is the performance of these phones. The A19 Pro chip is more than capable of handling basic functions, but it’s exceptionally powerful in gaming and complex task processing. The cooling system, combined with the aluminum alloy design, effectively slows down the device’s heat generation, a significant improvement over previous Pro models.

It’s hard to say whether either of these models offers the best value for money. But if you’re looking for the ultimate experience, the Pro series is the best choice. As for which one is better, that completely depends on personal preference—aside from screen size, battery life, and price, the Pro and Pro Max are functionally identical.

The most stylish iPhone: Apple iPhone Air

The specifications sheet can provide a wealth of information about a smartphone. However, specifications alone are hardly enough to find a compelling reason to buy the iPhone Air—the new ultra-thin iPhone that replaces the older “Plus” models in Apple’s product line—compared to the iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Pro.

This phone features only a single rear camera, lacking both telephoto and ultra-wide-angle lenses. It also lacks stereo speakers. While battery life isn’t as bad as initially feared, it’s still shorter than the base model. Both wireless and wired charging are slow. Most of these aspects aren’t terrible, but the key issue is this: you’re paying more for a device that’s significantly inferior in essential performance areas.

However, those issues may fade into the background once you actually hold it in your hand. The Air’s design is so slim and incredibly light that holding it feels like holding a display screen itself rather than a phone.

Yes, the pill-shaped camera bump on the back slightly diminishes the slimness, but it remains an understated and elegant device—the rounded corners flow smoothly, and the polished titanium frame is exceptionally robust.

This is a device built for design geeks, like those who are captivated by Leica cameras or Dyson vacuum cleaners, or users who are tired of the overall concept of the iPhone. It’s not about “value for money,” it’s about owning something that brings you joy every time you pick it up.

The iPhone Air doesn’t completely compromise on specifications, which is a big plus. It features the same ultra-fast A19 Pro chip variant as the iPhone 17 Pro, a 6.5-inch display with always-on display and a 120Hz refresh rate, and the front-facing camera has also been upgraded along with other new iPhones.

It’s still primarily aimed at early adopters and may well be the prototype for a foldable iPhone in the coming years. Its cost is too high for us to widely recommend. If you can accept the compromises, then go for it. Just don’t be surprised if you want to upgrade next year.
