The iPhone 16 and its siblings will certainly be heavily upgraded over the iPhone 15, but according to Apple leakers, the phones may not be vastly improved over their predecessors overall.

To illustrate this prediction, Gurman highlighted six major upgrades that he thinks are apparently coming to the iPhone 16 lineup. You'll find all six rumored upgrades below, along with our thoughts on whether or not they're important.

1. Operating buttons for all models

One of the things we've heard many times is that all four iPhone 16 models will apparently have an action button. This will be a customizable hardware button, though it's not actually a new feature as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max already have an action button. Instead, this is just the first time the standard and enhanced models are getting such a feature.

However, the tipster notes that Apple is adding more customization options to the lock screen and Control Center with iOS 18, which could result in the action buttons being less useful since you're already able to add various shortcuts to your phone.

That's a fair point, but it's still arguably faster and better to have shortcuts on physical buttons than it is to have shortcuts on the lock screen or Control Center. The bigger issue may simply be that the action button won't be a new feature in Apple's most popular phones (ie: Pro models).

2. Shooting buttons on Pro models

Another widely rumored upgrade to the iPhone 16 is the "shoot" button, which would be something really new since none of the current iPhone models have it.

Reiterating previous leaks, the tipster said the "shoot" button functions like a button on a DSLR camera, with a light press activating autofocus and a heavy press taking a picture. Also, sliding the button allows you to zoom in and out. Gurman said the "shoot" button also lets you control the camera.

Interestingly, though, the tipster suggests that the "Shoot" button may only be included on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, whereas many previous leaks suggested that it would be on all four models.

We're not sure who's here, but this could be a pretty big upgrade for any phone. How interesting it really is, however, depends on your passion for photography.

3. Larger Pro screen

We've also heard several times that the iPhone 16 Pro will come with a 6.3-inch screen (the previous iPhone 15 Pro was 6.1 inches), while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will come with a 6.9-inch display (the previous model, the iPhone 15 Pro, was 6.7 inches).

If you want to watch videos or do other things on your phone that require a larger screen, this should make a significant increase, but if you want a high-end phone that isn't too big, then it's not as useful.

4. Apple Artificial Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is the name of Apple's upcoming set of AI features, which isn't exclusive to the iPhone 16 series as it also applies to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Nonetheless, while Apple Intelligence may not be available until after the release of the iPhone 16 series, it's likely to be one of the main selling points of the new phone.

However, Gurman is skeptical that the initial Apple Intelligence features are interesting, and believes that they alone may not be a reason to upgrade.

5. New colors

As usual, there will definitely be some new iPhone colors this year, with tipsters pointing out that the blue color of the iPhone 15 Pro will be replaced by a rose gold option this year.

This is something we've heard before, with previous leaks suggesting that the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro colors will include black, white, rose, and gray, while the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 colors will include black, green, pink, blue, and white. We could also see yellow and purple shades.

However, for the most part, these colors are similar to those found on the iPhone 15 lineup, so it's not the most exciting option.

6. More powerful

Finally, the tipster notes that the iPhone 16 series will come with the new A18 chipset. However, he doesn't reveal whether every model will use the chipset, and we've heard elsewhere that the Pro models may use the A18 Pro.

Nonetheless, even if the base model only comes with the standard A18 (or even last year's A17 Pro), this will give all four models a power upgrade. All four phones will reportedly come with 8GB of RAM, as Apple Intelligence reportedly requires this capacity to run. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will get a 2GB RAM upgrade, but the Pro model is unchanged.

More power is always appreciated, but current iPhones are already powerful phones, and aside from their respective AI smarts, you might be hard-pressed to see much difference in the performance of these upcoming phones.

Considering all of this, the tipster may have a point when he says that this year's iPhone probably won't break previous sales records. But next year could be an even bigger year for the company, with both the iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 17 Air reportedly planned.

However, if you're currently using an iPhone that's a few years old or in less-than-ideal condition, one of the iPhone 16 series models is well worth buying.
