At last count, Apple makes eight different iPhone models, which makes choosing the right iPhone a challenge. From the entry-level iPhone SE to the top-of-the-line iPhone 14 Pro Max, choosing the right iPhone for you depends on what you need in terms of performance, features, size, price, and more.

My article is based on my years of experience reviewing iPhones. From the iPhone 6 to the latest iPhone 14 series, I've learned about the pros and cons of each model and what works best for a particular user. Let's take a look!

Best overall iPhone: iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro max

Despite the higher price, the iPhone 14 Pro models have so many upgrades and features over the standard iPhone 14 that they actually offer better value, especially if you plan to hold onto your phone for the long term.

If you upgrade every few years, you won't regret spending the extra money on the iPhone 14 Pro model for a 120Hz display, a 3x zoom lens, great battery life, and perhaps most importantly, the latest A16 bionic processor.

Not to mention you've got the latest design and functional features from Apple - Dynamic Island and an always-on display. These two features alone bring a modern flair to iPhone 14 Pro, which feels like and is largely the previous generation model.

If you prefer a larger screen, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is available for just $1,000 extra. It also offers longer battery life than the iPhone 14 Pro.

iPhone 14 is a repackaged iPhone 13 with Apple's new collision detection and SOS emergency distress features. Those are great features, and iPhone 14 is a great phone, but the value of a top spot in 2022 and 2023 isn't there.

Best iPhone for battery life: iPhone 14 Plus

If you're looking for the best battery life, then the best choice is usually a big-screen phone. That means buying the most expensive Pro Max model, but iPhone 14 Plus changes that.

While the regular version of iPhone 14 is not particularly impressive with its lackluster upgrades, iPhone 14 Plus feels like a refresh.

It's a big-screen iPhone, the size of the Pro Max, but much cheaper, lighter, and with incredible battery life.

In fact, it lasted longer on battery than the iPhone 14 Pro Max during testing, so we'd recommend it over the Pro model if you're not looking for premium features.

Otherwise, iPhone 14 Plus is almost identical to iPhone 14. But it's a larger-screen iPhone option for less than you'd normally pay for the larger-screen iPhone with the longest battery life, and those are the two biggest criteria when searching for a phone.

Best Value iPhone: iPhone 13

iPhone 13 offers a unique proposition - it's the new iPhone 14, but at a cheaper price. It has the same processor, the same design, the same camera, and the same screen as iPhone 13.

iPhone 13 doesn't have Apple's collision detection or SOS emergency safety features, which are features you might want to consider in iPhone 14 that make sense, even for the extra money. iPhone 14 will have slightly longer battery life and slightly better performance in low-light photos.

However, overall, iPhone 13 delivers the same experience as iPhone 14 99.9%, and that's what I'll tell anyone who asks me.

Best Mid-Range iPhone: iPhone 12

If you don't want to spend that much money on a brand new model, but you still want something with a more modern design and features than the iPhone SE, then iPhone 12 is an ideal choice that will also last for years.

iPhone 12 offers a modern iPhone design, 6.1-inch display, dual-lens camera, FaceID, support for the fastest 5G networks, and support for MagSafe charging and accessories.

It runs on Apple's A14 bionic processor, which is still powerful today and just a generation behind the latest iPhone 14.

iPhone battery life starts to get incredible with the iPhone 13 series, so you can justify spending more money on the superior battery life of iPhone 13, because iPhone 12's battery life is just average.

Otherwise, you can think of iPhone 12 as a high-end iPhone that was the top model two years ago. today there are significant upgrades that are worth every penny you need to buy the $7,999 iPhone 14 Pro, so it's a good deal to buy iPhone 12 at a low price.

Best Budget iPhone: iPhone SE 2022

Released in 2022, the $3,799 second-generation iPhone SE is the cheapest iPhone you can buy. it's a brilliantly small and cheap phone, but it comes with a few caveats.

The iPhone SE is very top-heavy on performance - it runs on the same processor as the iPhone 14, so its legs can last a long time. Some people are still hardcore fans of Touch ID, and the iPhone SE is the only recent model that still offers it.

Including Touch ID, at least on the classic iPhone home button, has its drawbacks. With its huge bezels above and below the screen, the iPhone SE's design harks back to the iPhone 6 era of 2014.

It's also the smallest screened iPhone at 4.7 inches, which is what some people are expecting. As a smaller phone, it doesn't have the longest battery life - heavy users will find themselves charging it during the day, but moderate users should find it lasts all day.

The iPhone SE has a decent camera, but its single lens has limited capabilities compared to the dual lens on the more expensive iPhone. Nonetheless, for many people, they only need one lens.
