This year's Mobile World Congress witnessed the unveiling of a new generation of smartphones ranging from foldable to curly. It was the best time in years for MWC to make a comeback; this year manufacturers made more breakthroughs in smartphone innovation than ever before.

Some we can already see the final product that will be hitting the market, and others just give us a glimpse of what's to come, but either way, it's going to get us excited. Let's take a look!

OnePlus wins "coolest" phone award

OnePlus is no stranger to showing off concept phones, and the latest, the OnePlus 11 Concept, may be one of the most practical and realistic.

As predicted early on, the phone OnePlus announced at MWC comes with the Active CryoFlux cooling system to boost gaming performance and effectively address heat dissipation issues.

The OnePlus 11's external transparent back cover isolates the internal components, which include glowing blue cooling tubes and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset that powers the phone.

OnePlus claims the concept phone reduces frame rate loss during gaming while lowering temperatures up to 35.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

The OnePlus 11 phone supports up to 100W of fast charging, and the Activ CryoFlux system prevents overheating and also increases the speed of charging, resulting in a value-for-money charge in 30 to 45 seconds.

Why isn't this called Moto-rolla?

While foldable devices have gotten a lot of attention over the past few years, curly-curlable phones are rarely on the radar. Manufacturers show them off in the form of phones, laptops, or TVs at annual trade shows, whether it's CES or MWC, but then the concepts are quickly overshadowed by news of marketed products.

The scrolling display has a charm all its own that the more powerful folding screen can't replicate. The ability to expand or shrink the display at the press of a button is futuristic, and it's a delightful spectacle to behold.

That's the story of the Motorola rollable phone at MWC 2023. It's officially called the Motorola Rizr, although the physical backside still has the familiar Rizr branding.

Motorola hasn't revealed much about the device's specs, but the idea is clear: press the side-mounted button and the square display expands to a higher 16:9 aspect ratio, offering a more practical media viewing experience and infinite scrolling through text. When not in use, the longer end of the screen scrolls to the bottom and back of the phone, which also serves as a viewfinder for selfies taken with the rear camera.

We don't expect to see a rollable phone hitting the market anytime soon. However, seeing Motorola's demo at MWC, we can see how much effort it's put in, and it wouldn't be surprising if these core technologies are passed on to future versions.

Xiaomi ushers in the era of 1-inch camera sensors

Xiaomi announced at this year's MWC the global launch of its next-generation flagship phones, the Xiaomi 13 and xiaomi 13 Pro, which feature a triple-camera array design and have been built in conjunction with Leica with large 4,500mAh and 4,820mAh batteries, respectively, as well as the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. In the promotion, the main emphasis is on the Pro model and its one-inch camera sensor.

It is not the first time that Xiaomi has placed bigger sensors in its smartphones. This was the case with the Xiaomi 12S Ultra and 12S Ultra Concept launched last year.

While the "one-inch sensor" isn't exactly designed to be one inch in size - there's a whole story about the origins of that term - it's definitely larger than the typical camera in a smartphone. It's larger than the typical camera in a smartphone and has two significant advantages: better light capture and shallower depth of field.

The Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro has a larger sensor that captures more light for more detail in both bright and dim environments.

Moreover, thanks to its one-inch sensor, the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro can capture enhanced, natural bokeh effects, even when you're close to your subject, producing a dreamy, blurred background effect that's impossible to achieve on a typical smartphone. In addition, the Xiaomi 13 Pro helps users find more creative fun in taking portraits with both prime and telephoto lenses.

Honor's latest foldable screen is full of magic

Samsung has dominated the global market for foldable phones, but companies like Honor (formerly Huawei) are starting to make moves that could erode the South Korean company's market share.

Announced at MWC, Honor's latest foldable-screen Honor Magic Vs will be available in select markets starting in the second quarter of this year, and has been anticipated by enthusiasts internationally since its December 2022 launch at home.

The Honor Magic Vs is quite similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4, which ZDNET named "the best foldable phone overall. "The Magic Vs is a book-style foldable phone that folds and expands from a smaller 6.45-inch display to a larger 7.9-inch tablet.

While both screen sizes are larger than Samsung's, they're noticeably thinner and the casing is seamless when folded, which is better for preventing damage by keeping dust and debris out of the internal screen.

Finally, Honor announced that the Magic Vs can withstand 400,000 folds before the structural integrity of the screen hinge degrades significantly, which in comparison is twice the 200,000 rating of the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Samsung Strong Enemy: OPPO Find N2 Flip

OPPO debuted its foldable product, the Find N2, earlier in the year with a list of important features that Samsung should look out for. It also recently launched the OPPO Find N2 Flip to compete head-to-head with Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 4, which is currently the most popular flip foldable phone.

The biggest difference between the OPPO Find N2 Flip and the Samsung Z Flip 4 is the outer screen, with both manufacturers designing their displays for quick operation, one-handed switching and adaptive viewing.

OPPO has embedded a larger 3.26-inch display on the Find N2 Flip (larger than the 1.9-inch on the Samsung Z Flip 4), which provides more space when interacting with the phone and is a better viewfinder when taking group photos.

OPPO, in an effort to address the issue of marks in Samsung's foldable products, has adopted the Flexion Hinge system on the OPPO Find N2 Flip. It allows the internal display to fold at a more rounded angle, creating a teardrop-like bend in the center that greatly reduces the formation of creases.
