Tablets are still one of the most versatile and useful digital products you can buy, even if they never outgrew laptops. They can play movies, make video calls, send emails, browse the web, read books, and more. If your cell phone screen is not the right size and you don't want a laptop, then a tablet is the perfect companion.

There are a lot of great tablets on the market - the iPad is the obvious choice - but I'll recommend a few for you based on your budget, needs and design tastes. Of course, there are plenty of terrible tablets out there, but rest assured, we don't have any of those in our ranking list.

Best Overall: Apple iPad Air (2022)

While only a few minor tweaks have been made compared to its 2020 predecessor, very little actually needs to change to make the best tablet on the market better.

Major upgrades come in the form of Apple's M1 chipset, there's a new 12Mp front-facing camera and the company's face-tracking Center Stage technology for video calls, and the cellular version now supports 5G network speeds.

On top of that, it offers the same premium design, including a wide range of colors, Touch ID, and compatibility with Apple's MyoControl Keyboard and the second-generation Apple Pencil.All Apple is really doing is offering a longer lifespan for its best tablets.

If you want 120Hz ProMotion technology or thinner bezels, consider switching to the 11-inch iPad Pro, but you'll pay a pretty penny for those add-ons.

Best Android Tablet: Xiaomi Pad 5

Xiaomi has been making its presence felt in the screen PC arena for quite some time now, but its return to the tablet space in 2021 in the form of the Xiaomi Pad 5 is pleasing to the eye.

This tablet features an ultra-thin design with a gorgeous 2.5K 120Hz display, great stereo speakers and reliable boot performance.

Like its phones, Xiaomi's MIUI user experience optimized for tablets isn't for everyone, but it's fully usable and we highly recommend it, especially since the Pad 5 is cheap.

Best Value: Apple iPad 10.2-inch (2021)

It may not be much different from previous entry-level iPads, or as big as the new 2022 model, but Apple has once again created a tablet that's hard to complain about, and for many it will be one of the cheapest tablets to get an iPad.

If you have a 7th or 8th generation iPad, it may not be enough to entice you, but if you want to try the iPad experience, there's a lot to like here.

It has everything you need in a tablet for all your daily needs, with a 10.2-inch TrueTone screen, A13 bionic chip and 64GB of storage as standard.

Apple has since introduced an updated 2022 model with a newer 10.9-inch design, but we think the 10.2 is a much better value at a much lower price.

Best with a stylus: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8

Those looking for a premium Android experience should seriously consider the Galaxy Tab S8. compared to the Tab S8+ and Tab S8 Ultra, it's pricey but still the smartest choice.

You get what you pay for, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, plenty of RAM and storage, making it more powerful than others in the Android market. It's also one of the few that comes with a stylus in the form of an S Pen.

In addition to Samsung's trademark high standard of design and configuration. One of our main complaints is the lack of an AMOLED screen, especially at this price, but that only bothers serious creatives and movie lovers. Other caveats include the fact that Samsung doesn't include a charger.

Best for Creatives: Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2022)

The larger, newest iPad Pro is the most powerful tablet on the market, featuring Apple's desktop-class M2 chip for unmatched power, one of the best displays with a 120Hz refresh rate and mini LED backlighting to make it competitive using an OLED display that's also brighter.

The experience is further improved by the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, which turns the tablet into a full-fledged laptop replacement.

If you actually use all the original and creative features on the Apple Pencil, then you can probably justify it.

Best Windows Tablet: Microsoft Surface Pro 9

If you rely on Windows or want a great tablet for productivity, the Surface Pro 9 is the way to go - provided you choose the Intel model.

Moving to the 12th gen chip is the only upgrade of note, but that's easily forgiven after the introduction of major upgrades on the Pro 8. It maintains a sleek, premium design with 120Hz to showcase the stars of the show.

Other highlights include solid battery life, a great webcam, and great accessories. You may have seen a new ARM-based model for 2022 that extends battery life, adds new video calling features, and brings 5G to the Surface Pro for the first time.

But the impact on performance and the way some third-party apps run simply isn't worth it for most people.

Best e-ink tablet: ReMarkable 2

For something a little different from a traditional tablet, the ReMarkable 2 is well worth a look. This e-ink tablet looks like it's sleek as hell, but you can do more than just read a book on it.

The extremely thin design is a big draw here, and the customized operating system really makes tasks like taking notes easy, and there's clever cloud syncing, screenshots, and online storage.

On the downside, you have to pay a subscription fee to access all the features, and unfortunately the ReMarkable doesn't include a stylus and the screen isn't backlit to use the tablet in the dark.
