Many of Samsung's phones can do this, but the choice depends on your specific priorities. Do you want the best Samsung phone at a low cost? The best camera? The best small screen model? Or perhaps the premium model of the best Android phone available?

We've considered the latest models in Samsung's flagship S-series and the more modest A-series, as well as foldable phones, to help you determine the best Samsung phone for you.

Best Overall: Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus

While the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is nominally Samsung's top phone for 2023, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus offers a better overall balance of performance, camera and features relative to its price.

In fact, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus is a very well-balanced phone with all the specs anyone would want in a high-end phone, and it's less expensive and has longer battery life than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus scored the best of Samsung's current lineup in our battery test, while offering a large 6.6-inch screen running at 120Hz. thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 optimized for Samsung's Galaxy processor, which is the same processor as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, apps open and run quickly and smoothly, and the overall performance of the phone feels very smooth.

The three cameras on the back of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus take high-quality photos, and in my testing I saw no reason to upgrade to the 200MP main camera on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The selfie camera on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus - the same as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra - is also the best in recent memory for a Samsung phone.

We're almost speechless about the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus - not only is it the best Samsung phone overall, but we've also rated it as the best Android phone you can buy overall.

Best Budget: Samsung Galaxy A14 5G

The Samsung Galaxy A14 with 5G is an amazingly powerful phone that offers the best balance between features and price in Samsung's A-series phones.

While the Samsung Galaxy A14 doesn't open apps as fast as the flagship Samsung Galaxy S23 series, or even the $450 Galaxy A54, it still runs apps smoothly on a 90Hz screen - something we wouldn't expect on a phone in this price range! specs.

The Samsung Galaxy A14 also comes with a large 6.6-inch display and a stunning 1080p resolution, the same resolution offered by the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus.

You'll see three camera lenses on the textured plastic back of the Samsung Galaxy A14, but you'll probably only use one of them, the 50MP main camera.

One of the other cameras is a 2MP macro lens for close up shots of raindrops on leaves, but it's not sharp at all. The other is a depth sensor that doesn't take pictures, but is designed to help the main camera take portrait mode photos.

The 50MP main camera takes photos with solid colors, contrast and brightness. It's a powerful camera if you're on a budget of around $200, but if camera quality is a top priority and you can stretch your budget, we'd rather recommend the starting Samsung Galaxy A54 for better photos (and performance).

Like the A54, the Galaxy A14 doesn't have wireless charging.The A14 supports 15W charging, which is slower, but acceptable at this price point.

Best Camera: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

With its four camera lenses, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has the best camera system in Samsung's latest line of phones.

All of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S23 phones can take the same great photos, but the fourth 10x zoom lens, exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, gives it the most versatility relative to the company's other phones with 3x zoom cameras. That means you can take far better photos of distant objects and subjects than any other Samsung phone or any other cell phone for that matter.

Having a 10x zoom camera doesn't just mean you can take sharp, clear, detailed photos at 10x zoom, it also means you can take acceptable, if not decent, photos at more than 10x. Other than the older Galaxy Ultra phones with 10x zoom lenses, no other Samsung phone can compete in this regard.

Unless the camera is very stable, taking photos at such a high zoom range is essentially pointless, as shaking hands will result in blurred photos. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has excellent Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which greatly reduces micro-shaking of the hand. Please note that you will still need to remain still. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra's OIS is impressive, but it's no miracle.

You may be wondering if the 200MP primary camera on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra provides better photos than the 50MP primary camera on Samsung's other Galaxy S23 flagships.

We don't actually see any improvement in the Galaxy S23 Ultra's 200MP main camera over the 50MP main camera on the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus, even in low-light photos, where so many megapixels could be a benefit.

This is good news for those who think the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is too expensive for their budget, and for those who don't necessarily want a 10x zoom lens.

Best battery life phone: Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus

"The bigger the screen, the longer the battery life" is a maxim that usually applies to new smartphones. But that's not the case with Samsung's latest lineup.

The Galaxy S23 Plus with a 6.6-inch screen completed our battery stress test with a charge of 67%, while the 6.8-inch Galaxy S23 Ultra completed the battery stress test with a charge of 61%.

This is a surprising result as the Galaxy S23 Plus' 4,700mAh battery is smaller than the Galaxy S23 Ultra's 5,000mAh battery.

Nonetheless, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus still came out on top when each phone was subjected to five Geekbench 5 CPU tests, two 3DMark Wild Life stress tests, two hours of video streaming, and one hour of music streaming over Bluetooth headphones.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus also supports the same 45W charging speed and 15W wireless charging speed as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which means it's one of the fastest charging models in Samsung's contemporary lineup.

Best Small Phone: Samsung Galaxy S23

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is basically a smaller version of the Galaxy S23 Plus, our top pick for the best Samsung phone overall. It runs on the same processor and has the same triple-lens camera, and its display runs at the same silky smooth 120Hz.

It has a smaller 6.1-inch screen and a lighter weight (which some may find more comfortable) while doing all of this.

Aside from size, the only major difference between the standard S23 and S23 Plus is battery life, with the former scoring lower in our battery stress test (56% remaining). However, this is to be expected in a smaller phone.

It's also worth noting that the Galaxy S23 only supports 25W charging speeds while the Galaxy S23 Plus supports 45W, which is puzzling, but not a deal breaker if you prefer a smaller phone.

Best Foldable Phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is one of two foldable phones Samsung currently offers, including the Galaxy Z Flip 4. If you're looking for a foldable phone from Samsung, we'd recommend the Galaxy Z Fold 4 first, as its external display and greater versatility make it worth the starting price.

When folded, the Z Fold 4 has a 6.2-inch external screen that runs at a seamless 120Hz and works as an excellent (albeit thicker than usual) small-screen phone.

When unfolded, the phone's internal display resembles a lightweight 7.6-inch tablet that also runs effortlessly at 120Hz.

These factors alone distinguish the Z Fold 4 from the Z Flip 4 and justify the $800 starting price difference between them.

By contrast, the flip Z Flip 4 has a 1.9-inch external display that can be used as a notification screen, viewfinder for the main camera, or a means of controlling music and other media. We also found its 6.7-inch internal display to be too narrow and constricted for everyday phone calls, despite its smooth 120Hz screen.
