Honor Magic Vs: Honor's first foldable phone

Hey, Honor's folding screen is awesome.The Magic Vs is the first bookish folding screen phone to compete with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4, making Samsung look a bit old-fashioned in so many ways.

The Honor Magic Vs looks pretty ordinary in its folded state, thanks to its relatively conventional 21:9 external screen. You know, most phones nowadays have a slightly wider 20:9 or 19.5:9 aspect ratio, but the difference between them is really minimal, so the Honor Magic Vs doesn't feel constrained at all when looking at the external screen.

The 6.45-inch display has a resolution of 2560 x 1080 and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. It's bright enough to reach 1200 nits, which is more than enough to enjoy a smooth outdoor experience in the sun.

However, the curve on the right side of the display on the Honor Magic Vs is really slight and breathless. When folded, it makes the phone look even more asymmetrical, like the right side becomes smooth and rounded while the left side has a square hinge. It's really reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge from 2014... that design should have gone away a long time ago. And that uneven design is also present on the back, with the prominent camera array nestled in the top left corner.

Honestly, though, the asymmetry is a necessary drawback as it's meant to make the phone feel rounder in your hands when unfolded. Once unfolded, the internal screen is revealed, displaying a 90Hz OLED panel with a whopping 2272 x 1984 resolution and 800 nits of brightness. The back looks pretty symmetrical too, with the left and right curves echoing each other.

The Honor Magic Vs is certainly a flagship phone, but a quick glance at the spec sheet makes it clear that it was first released in 2022. The Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 in it has almost been replaced by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is more energy efficient and more powerful. However, the 8 Plus is still incredibly powerful, and with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, it should still be able to handle itself for years to come.
