Recently, the tech giant Huawei released a report announcing that it achieved 3% year-on-year revenue growth in the first half of 2023 and managed to expand its profit margins, despite being constrained by sanctions on processor chips and other technologies.

-

In the face of restrictions that have hit its smartphone brand not so hard, Huawei is still addressing the problem and developing new revenue points, intensifying its efforts to sell network equipment to hospitals, ports, electric car brands, and other industrial customers. Huawei is confident that the company won't be easily bound by sanctions, and to that end has stepped up its business push in a number of areas.

Huawei Technologies Co. recently announced its financial results for the six months ended June, reporting a 3.11 TP2T increase in revenue to CNY310.9 billion (about $43.1 billion). While not revealing specific profit figures, the company emphasized that its profit margin reached 151 TP2T, or roughly 45 billion yuan ($6.5 billion), up from 4.31 TP2T in the first quarter of this year.

-

According to Huawei's report, sales in its infrastructure division reached CNY167.2 billion (about $23.2 billion). And the consumer business posted sales of 103.5 billion yuan (about $14.3 billion). Additionally, Huawei's emerging automotive division, which provides networking and other technologies for electric vehicles, realized sales of CNY1 billion (about $138.6 billion).

Huawei, the world's largest maker of network equipment for telephones and internet companies, sold its Honor smartphone brand in 2020 to adjust its market strategy. While still continuing to sell phones under the Huawei brand, the company is now focusing primarily on the Chinese market, while overseas sales have declined.

-

Huawei's recently released earnings report shows that the company's net profit for 2022 fell by 701 TP2T to 35.6 billion yuan (~$5.2 billion), yet sales saw a 0.91 TP2T increase to 642.3 billion yuan (~$93.5 billion).

Of Huawei's 207,000 employees, half work in research and development. According to the company, they have made some breakthroughs in components to develop alternatives in-house. In addition, Huawei has shown significant progress in the development of design tools for processor chips.

Huawei to restart 5G mobile chip output as early as this year, Huawei to launch 5G smartphones soon?

A research firm recently noted that Huawei plans to re-enter the 5G smartphone space by the end of this year, showing that it's coming back in full force despite the impact of device sales bans in certain countries on its consumer electronics business.

-

Three third-party technology research firms covering the Chinese smartphone market have revealed online that Huawei is expected to source 5G chips domestically through its advanced semiconductor design tools and chip manufacturing capabilities acquired from China's leading chipmaker SMIC.

In addition, these third-party technology research firms also revealed that one of them predicted that Huawei may adopt SMIC's N+1 manufacturing process.

-

Shipments of 5G chips are expected to be limited to around 2 to 4 million units, although yields of available chips are expected to be likely to be lower than 50%. Another company expects shipments could be as high as 10 million units, although no further details were provided.

It's expected that Huawei could launch 5G versions of its flagship models this year, such as the P60 that could compete with the iPhone, and potentially launch new products in early 2024.

-

The three research firms said the predictions were based on information they had verified with contacts in Huawei's supply chain as well as recent announcements made by the company.

Huawei is clearly actively exploring ways to regain its position in the smartphone market and leverage its technological prowess and supply chain resources to re-enter the 5G smartphone space.
