I stayed up all night to watch Apple's event, and now I'm taking you on a closer look at the new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. of course, the most important thing is the arrival of USB-C. It's been more than a decade since Apple introduced the troubled Lightning port 11 years ago, so an update is long overdue.
Add to that the recent EU legislation aimed at popularizing USB-C, and the fact that the company has extended the nearly ubiquitous standard to its other devices (iPad, Mac), and you can see why the company is switching charging jacks here.
This time Apple is equipping the new iPhones with USB 3.0 at speeds of up to 10 Gbps. you'll be able to charge the new iPhones using the charger and cable from your iPad Pro, MacBook Pro or Galaxy. However, Apple has not revealed any information about faster charging.
Apple hasn't really changed much about the iPhone 15 Pro series, the design is still almost the same. Apple however claims that the new iPhone 15 Pro has the lightest bezels and weight. The dimensions are actually not much different from the previous generation though, but Apple still managed to reduce the overall size of the phone.
The frame is made of titanium instead of stainless steel, and Apple claims it's the lightest Pro model it's ever launched. The difference to the 11 Pro duo is just 1g, but the new model drops 19g compared to last year's 14 Pro duo.
The specific alloy is grade 5 titanium, which the company says is also used in the Mars rover. Apple uses a new thermo-mechanical process to encapsulate aluminum in the titanium substructure. The encapsulated aluminum helps dissipate heat.
The phone's bezel has a brushed texture, which was processed, polished, brushed and finally sandblasted on the phone's titanium casing over a 14-hour period. The iPhone 15 Pro is available in four finishes - black and white, blue and natural titanium.
The Mute switch is now an action button. By default, pressing and holding puts the phone in silent mode again, but you can specify one of a set of actions when you press or double-tap - you can eventually use the button to quickly turn on the camera on your iPhone.
The front of the new iPhone 15 Pro features ceramic shielded glass, just like the 14 Pro model. The iPhone 15 Pro Max bumps the size up to 6.7 inches. Always-on display has been expanded to include a landscape always-on mode in standby, i.e. while charging.
The camera system on the new iPhone 15 Pro is completely new. It all starts with the 48MP main camera, which has a larger sensor with 1.22μm pre-installed pixels and second-generation sensor shift stabilization. The lens is 24mm f/1.78.
The main camera brings some imaging possibilities to the iPhone 15 Pro. You can now capture 48MP HEIF images as well as 48MP ProRAW images. The new larger sensor also supports 28-millimeter, 35-millimeter, and 48-millimeter digital zoom modes, and iPhone will allow you to choose one of these focal lengths as the default setting.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max debuts the first ever periscope camera on an iPhone. Thanks to the folded optical design, the Pro Max has a final zoom of more than 3x and up to 5x, or 120mm in a 35mm-equivalent lens. The optical design is unique. Apple calls it a quad prism, which reflects light four times from the pupil opening of the lens to the folded sensor. The lens itself is f/2.8, the brightest of the 120mm cameras on the phone, which is certainly very specific. There's also optical stabilization, which Apple says makes 10,000 fine adjustments per second to eliminate blur.
The iPhone 15 Pro comes with a 77mm 3x zoom camera with 1μm pixels and an f/2.8 lens, which isn't much different from the camera on last year's phone.
Both models feature the new 13mm f/2.2 1.4μm ultra-wide-angle lens with 100% focusing pixels and macro focusing capability.
The A17 Pro chip powers the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It's the first industry chip built on a 3nm process. Inside is a 6-core processor with 2 performance cores (which Apple says are 0% faster than the A16 Bionic) and 4 efficiency cores.
The GPU is a 6-core unit that Apple claims is 20% faster than its predecessor during peak performance. The GPU supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which is said to be 4x faster than software-based ray tracing on last year's chip.
The A17 Pro SoC features a display engine with a dedicated AV1 codec and ProRes codec. The chip allows the new iPhone 15 Pro models to capture 4k 60fps in ProRes RAW format and supports industry standard ACES color profiles.
The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are now available. The 15 Pro 128 GB base model starts at $7,999 and the 15 Pro Max starts at $9,999, but the base model now has 256 GB of onboard storage. These prices are the same as last year.
