Hello, how are you? I am the original huh, click on the attention, more exciting content waiting for you!
It's been a big year for the smartphone industry, with nearly every manufacturer joining the foldable craze, Samsung pushing the boundaries of camera technology, and Apple continuing to dominate.
With the new iPhone 15 models hitting stores this month, Apple fans will have the option to upgrade to get USB-C charging, an improved camera, and more. Let's take a look!
iPhone 15 Pro Max: The best iPhone ever
The new iPhone 15 Pro Max offers everything you'd expect from a premium flagship smartphone. The 6.7-inch model is the largest in the iPhone 15 lineup and comes with the latest features from Apple.
It looks and feels different from previous Pro Max models because it's made of titanium rather than stainless steel. noted in Apple, which makes the iPhone 15 Pro Max noticeably lighter.
Another major new feature of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the USB-C connector, which supports faster charging and data transfer, the ability to charge AirPods Pro 2 (with the new USB-C case) and the Apple Watch from your iPhone, and the ability to connect an external 4K display to your iPhone.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max also features a new 5x zoom camera lens, which is equivalent to a 120-millimeter focal length for mirrorless or DSLR cameras.
New action buttons allow you to better customize shortcuts and easily open the applications you need. The A17 Pro chip delivers computer-like performance.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: the best phone overall
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is, without a doubt, the most feature-packed smartphone you can buy today. It comes with a 6.8-inch AMOLED display that delivers vivid visuals in both the brightest and darkest environments, a reliable 5,000mAh battery, four rear cameras to help you take a variety of photos, and an overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Galaxy chipset.
This last point is especially important considering how much more powerful and efficient the new Ultra flagship is, even compared to last year's S22 series. In my ZDNET review, I mentioned that "the mobile platform brings meaningful improvements to the Galaxy phone experience, and Samsung has optimized the S23 Ultra with a larger vapor-cooling chamber and more efficient back-end processing.
In short, you're getting a powerful phone for any type of user, including mobile gamers." That's pretty high praise for a smartphone that isn't specifically designed for gaming, right?
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra proves its worth through unique specs and features that are really important for everyday use.
These include 256GB of base storage (versus the industry standard of 128GB), an integrated S Pen that gives you enhanced precision and input, Samsung's five-year commitment to security updates, and even Samsung DeX, whose mobile-to-desktop service transforms your S23 Ultra into a fully-functional computer when connected to a monitor or TV.
OnePlus 11: The best fast-charging phone
Slow phone charging can be a real pain point, especially if you're always on the go. That's why the OnePlus 11 has carved out its own best-in-class category, beating Apple, Huawei and even Samsung when it comes to charging speed. The latest model comes with 100W SuperVooc fast charging.
For reference, the top-end iPhone 14 Pro Max has a charging speed cap of 30W, and Samsung's Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a charging speed cap of 45 W. From testing and comparison, it takes at least an hour to ramp up from 0% to 75% on both phones, which is significantly lower than the OnePlus 11's numbers.
In less than 27 minutes, the OnePlus can go from empty to full. This charging speed, and the fact that OnePlus includes its proprietary charger in the box, puts it a step ahead of the rest.
Best of all, the rest of the phone is no slouch either. You get a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a 5,000mAh dual battery, and a competitive triple-camera array.
Overall, the OnePlus is also cheap and as good value for money as the best budget smartphones on this list.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: The best flip smartphone ever made
While some may prefer the Motorola Razr+, Samsung's success is undisputed when it comes to foldable devices. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the most refined piece of hardware to date, boasting a thinner, flatter chassis that's better suited to fit in your pocket.
The real showstopper, though, is the Flex Window, a 3.4-inch cover display that's a huge upgrade over earlier models, capable of previewing notifications, swiping widgets, replying to text messages, and even opening full apps.
There are some differences in how Samsung and Motorola handle their respective smartphones. Samsung's widgets are much better than those on the Razr+, while Motorola allows you to open apps by default without having to skip any steps to add third-party services. That said, Samsung does exhibit some serious design flaws compared to the Razr, especially when it comes to build quality.
Honestly, it depends on which flip-folding screen phone you prefer. While some may prefer the cleaner Android version seen on the Motorola Razr+, it's hard to deny the adaptations and refinements here.
Samsung has truly mastered the art of making a modern flip phone. Now it just needs to figure out how to compress a telephoto lens into one.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Best Foldable Phone
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 may not be as exciting as previous foldable phones, but the features that performed well last year are still valid on Samsung's latest version. The major improvement this year is the new hinge, which allows the entire phone to fold flat for a thinner, lighter body.
You'll only notice the change if you're using an older Z-series phone - frankly, anyone who owns a Z Fold 4 or even a decent Z Fold 3 shaped phone shouldn't be upgrading - but it's still a welcome improvement.
Much of this phone is the same as last year's, and it all starts with the screen. You'll find the same external 6.2-inch display paired with a spacious 7.6-inch internal screen that's perfect for productivity.
As a bonus, this year's folding display is brighter than ever, matching the output of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. You can still use S Pen support, but it will require a new case. Thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, performance and efficiency are better than ever. Additionally, the One UI feels like it was designed from the ground up compared to the experience on the Pixel Fold.
You might expect such iterative upgrades to result in price cuts, but Samsung has kept its foldable products super-expensive. Prices have only gone up since then. So it's not something the average person can afford.
