1. iPhone 15 Pro: the best iPhone for most people

If you prefer the palm size of Apple's 6.1-inch iPhone to the oversized Max phones, the iPhone 15 Pro is the best iPhone yet.

Its larger sibling may have a slightly better 5x periscope zoom lens, but in all other respects, the iPhone 15 Pro can be considered the exact same phone, but at a more reasonable price.

It's certainly a beautiful phone for beginners. The iPhone 15 Pro has a gorgeous titanium design that can withstand unwanted drops more effectively than its predecessor, and the addition of a USB-C port makes it a more versatile phone when it comes to charging and compatibility.

The iPhone 15 Pro's stunning 6.1-inch Super XDR OLED screen (with ProMotion) is unchanged from the (equally brilliant) iPhone 14 Pro, but this time around, everything is underpinned by Apple's all-new A17 Pro chipset, which promises to deliver console-grade gaming experience performance and superior multitasking capabilities.

On the back, you get a 48MP quad-pixel prime lens and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, as well as a 12MP telephoto lens capable of 3x optical zoom.

As mentioned, the last shot is surpassed by the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but the overall camera setup of the iPhone 15 Pro still ranks among the best in the market; everyday users will find plenty of photographic power here.

Sure, the $7,999 asking price is high, but the iPhone 15 Pro will almost certainly last you the next four or five years without issue.

2. iPhone 15: The best value iPhone ever!

Apple's latest release, the iPhone 15, marks the most significant advancement in the base iPhone in years and earns its place as the most valuable iPhone of 2023.

If you don't care about titanium bezels, 120Hz scrolling, or high-spec zoom photography, the standard iPhone 15 offers pretty much everything you'd want in a flagship phone, but at a much lower price.

Here you get a 6.1-inch Super XDR OLED display, an ultra-fast A16 Bionic chipset, a USB-C port, a powerful 48MP primary camera, and Apple's beautifully crafted digital on-screen Spirit Island design, all in one sleek, eye-catching design choice.

In recent years, Apple's standard models have felt like minor upgrades, dwarfed by their pro-level counterparts, but the iPhone 15 bucks that trend and becomes a truly great value.

3. iPhone 15 Pro Max: the best iPhone overall

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is undoubtedly the best iPhone you can buy in 2023, so it's the top choice for Apple fans.

The smaller iPhone 15 Pro is also an excellent phone and worth considering if you prefer the more practical 6.1-inch size, but the latter is objectively the superior smartphone since the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max offers a 5x periscope zoom lens.

In addition to the first-ever periscope zoom lens on iPhone, iPhone 15 Pro Max features a 48MP quad-pixel primary lens and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, making it the most powerful and versatile iPhone mobile photographer to date.

In addition to its photography capabilities, the iPhone 15 Pro Max features a brilliant 6.7-inch Super XDR OLED screen, a gorgeous titanium design, a USB-C port, and Apple's new A17 Pro chipset, which delivers performance comparable to mobile gaming some high-end computers.

In other words, as far as iPhones go, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the best, but you'll have to pay a premium to own one, while Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra actually has a slightly better camera.

4. iPhone 13: The best budget iPhone

The iPhone 13 isn't the biggest annual iPhone upgrade right now, but it's a little better than the iPhone 12 in almost every way, which means it's still a great iPhone overall, but more importantly, it's the cheapest iPhone Apple still sells.

In my review, I found the battery life of this phone to be particularly impressive, and the iPhone 13 allows us to use it every day without having to charge it before bed.

We're also impressed with the design, which includes a smaller notch (compared to the iPhone 13), and the power this phone still has to offer as a result of its A15 bionic chipset. Apple claimed at launch that the iPhone 13's CPU was 50% faster than its competitors, and while that's hard to prove, it's certainly a fast phone.

The iPhone debuted on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, and the lack of a 120Hz screen is a shame, and it's even more frustrating that even its successors haven't broken 60Hz.

Even so, this is still a great smartphone with plenty of longevity. If you're looking for a cheap iPhone to see you through the next few years, then this is the one for you.

5. iPhone 14 Plus: the iPhone with the best battery life

The iPhone 14 Plus replaces the mini models of the previous two generations, instead dragging the slider in the other direction and offering an oversized iPhone experience, , which in recent years has been unique to the Pro Max entries in the series.

When you choose it, you'll get a 6.7-inch display, just like the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but the rest of the phone is more closely aligned with the standard iPhone 14, featuring the same dual 12MP rear cameras and enhanced A15 bionic chip as the iPhone 13 Pro.

The display is also still 60Hz, but better heat dissipation and more modest display technology combined with the Plus' large battery means it offers the best battery life the iPhone has ever seen.

6. iPhone SE (2022): the best small iPhone ever

With the iPhone 13 mini now officially discontinued, the 4.7-inch iPhone SE (2022) is the new best option for those who prefer a smaller iPhone.

This small, classic iPhone was actually the first mid-range iPhone to support 5G, which was a major selling point at the time.

The presence of the same A15 Bionic chipset as the iPhone 13 series is still a big plus, meaning this phone is more powerful than most Android flagship phones, albeit at a much lower cost.

The iPhone SE (2022) has a slim, lightweight build and a compact display that's comfortable to use, but at this point it also feels very dated, with large bezels above and below the display.

It's also more expensive than its predecessor, although the 2023 is still affordable. If it weren't for these issues, this iPhone would probably rank higher.
