Huawei's annual developer conference, HDC 2024, is the official launch of the company's latest operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT. This announcement comes after years of development for HarmonyOS. This Huawei-developed OS completely removes the Linux kernel and Android open source code base.

As the OS was created from scratch, Huawei claims that the new system architecture has improved the overall performance of the machine by 301 TP2T and reduced power consumption by 201 TP2T.

HarmonyOS NEXT is currently in Beta testing and is looking for developers and a limited number of pioneer users to join. Interested parties should be aware that the Beta may be unstable and may lead to data incompatibility issues.

One platform for multiple devices

A core feature of HarmonyOS NEXT is its ability to bridge the gap between different devices. Huawei says that developers only need to create one version of the app to ensure a consistent user experience across screen sizes in Huawei's ecosystem.

This was demonstrated at the conference with popular apps such as Taobao, eCar and BeiliBeili running seamlessly on different devices. In addition, HarmonyOS NEXT has a unique "app recovery" feature.

Imagine initiating a video call on your tablet and then seamlessly transferring it to your phone with just one click.

The system also allows easy sharing of data between devices. For example, you can easily cut and paste images from your phone to your tablet while working on a document.

Harmony Intelligence: AI platform integrated into the system

HarmonyOS NEXT is more than just device connectivity. The operating system also integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) functionality directly into the system under the name "Harmony Intelligence".

AI Audio Repair: This feature is designed to help people with speech impairments by enhancing communication. Huawei's virtual assistant Xiaoyi has also received an upgrade to HarmonyOS NEXT. The virtual assistant is now called "Intelligent Agent Xiaoyi" and utilizes the power of Pangu Big Model 5.0. XiaoYi no longer requires a wake word and can be "summoned" by dragging and dropping content into the navigation bar.

This allows for more intuitive interactions where Yi can analyze the content and provide relevant actions, such as creating charts or summarizing documents from images.

Enhanced Security with Star Shield

Security remains Huawei's top priority. HarmonyOS NEXT integrates a new StarShield security architecture designed to protect user data.
