The iPhone 15 Pro Max is the best iPhone you can buy, at least if money is no object, and it's definitely one of Apple's best phones. So it's understandable that we're quite excited about the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

So, in addition to adding more features, there are definitely upgrades that Apple could make, and from what we've heard so far, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is likely to be a major upgrade that includes a larger screen, extra buttons, and, among other things, a longer-range optical zoom.

IPHONE 16 PRO MAX or ULTRA?

On the eve of the iPhone 15 launch, it was widely speculated whether Apple would introduce "Ultra" to the lineup in 2023; companies such as Samsung, Motorola, and Xiaomi already use the suffix in their rival phone lines.

But there hasn't been any rumors about the iPhone 15 Ultra, so it stands to reason that the discussion about the iPhone Ultra must apply to Apple's iPhone 16 lineup, which is expected to launch in late 2024.

It's unclear whether the Ultra will replace the Pro Max or launch alongside it. However, if Apple opts for the latter option, it will raise the upper limit of its iPhone portfolio, allowing the company to charge higher prices for its best and brightest iPhone yet.

IPHONE 16 PRO MAX: Expected design and display

While I don't have access to the full spec sheet yet, some discussion about the iPhone 16 Pro Max design has surfaced.

A report on the web claims that the Face ID system was initially moved to the dynamic island of the iPhone 14 Pro series, which will go underneath the screen pixels, leaving only the front-facing camera pro-max on the 16.

Speaking of screens, Apple managed to make the bezels on both iPhone 15 Pro models thinner, but one key analyst expects the overall panel size to increase next year. If true, this could mean that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will come with a 6.9-inch screen, while the 15 Pro Max currently has a 6.7-inch screen, making it the largest iPhone yet.

We've also heard another source mention a larger iPhone 16 Pro Max screen size, while a third source similarly noted a 6.86-inch screen size for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, so this sounds likely.

Another source again pointed to the iPhone 16 Pro Max featuring a 6.9-inch display, but added that the overall size of the phone may not increase due to smaller bezels. Another source also noted that the iPhone 16 Pro Max has smaller bezels, while a third source said that the iPhone 16 Pro Max could have the thinnest bezels of any phone at just 1.15 millimeters. So it looks like smaller bezels are a possibility.

Another leak echoes this, stating that each bezel of the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 1.153 millimeters, adding that the phone measures 163.024 x 77.575 x 8.26 millimeters as it has a 6.883-inch screen, the

Another rumor suggests that Apple's already bright display in the iPhone will be overtaken by a new "Multi-Lens Array" (MLA) AMOLED panel.

The MLA technology, reportedly a member of the Pro (and possibly Ultra) 2024 iPhone lineup, helped LG make its TV panels 60% brighter, while Samsung has apparently been using MLA AMOLED screens on products like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The tradeoffs for the MLA technology are potentially reduced viewing angles and a higher panel price, which could have a ripple effect on the final price of the 16 Pro Max if Apple decides to go that route.

On top of that, the action buttons on the sides of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will almost certainly remain in next year's models. But there's more: solid-state buttons were initially expected to appear on the Pro iPhone in 2023, and there are rumors that they'll debut on all iPhone 16 models, including the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Most importantly, we're hearing that the iPhone 16 Pro Max and its siblings may come with a new solid-state "shoot" button. The source of the rumor didn't specify the purpose of the button.

We've also now heard another source mention the addition of a new button across the iPhone 16 lineup, with the source adding that the action buttons will apparently be solid state as well, but the power and volume buttons won't be.

Similarly, a third source is now saying to expect solid/capacitive "Action" and "Shoot" buttons on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, so this sounds likely.

Meanwhile, the USB-C port and new lightweight titanium frame introduced this year will no doubt make another appearance. However, we're hoping Apple will offer more interesting colors on next year's Pro Max, as this year's lineup looks a bit ...... bland.

The leak also mentioned colors, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max apparently being tested in the same shades as the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but there are apparently plans to add an additional mystery color. This design has since been backed up by the entire iPhone 16 series of leaked models, as seen below. A second set of iPhone 16 series models also showcase this design.

Another iPhone 16 Pro Max model with this design was also leaked, this time shown alongside the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is only a little bit bigger than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, despite the rumored larger screen.

Getting back to the color theme, another leak suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be available in Deep Space Black, White, Gray, and Rose. These colors are similar to the current shades, with the exception of Rose, which may be more like Rose Gold and will reportedly replace the Titanium Blue of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

IPHONE 16 PRO MAX: Anticipated Camera

The camera hardware of the past two iPhone generations represents a significant advancement in the series, with the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max featuring a new 48MP primary sensor, the addition of a lossless 2x zoom via sensor cropping, and a number of other new photography tricks.

Fast forward to this year's iPhone lineup, and in addition to an enhanced 48MP primary sensor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max benefits from Apple's first periscope telephoto lens with up to 5x zoom. However, some sources suggest that its successor will go even further.

Under Apple's approach, the sensor could be used as a low-profile camera module using an extended prism design or a folding prism (like the quad prism on the 15 Pro Max's 5x telephoto snapshots). Or, the company could combine its existing prism and sensor cropping technologies to achieve this impressive target zoom range.

We've also heard that Apple may use thinner molded glass to help achieve this extended zoom in the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This means that whichever of the above methods Apple uses, the final lens will be smaller than the other methods.

Assuming the iPhone 16 Pro Max's main sensor maintains the 15 Pro/Pro Max's current 24mm focal length and 6x telephoto camera.

As already mentioned, it's unclear if this ultra-telephoto camera will come to the iPhone 16 Pro Max or iPhone 16 Ultra, or if they're one and the same. But either way, we're keeping our fingers crossed that this technology makes it to the iPhone in 2024.

In fact, talk of an "ultra-telephoto" lens has died down, so we now think it's unlikely to appear this year.

IPHONE 16 PRO MAX: Expected Specifications and Features

On the day the iPhone 15 Pro Max was announced, Apple also released an Xcode 15 release candidate, which showed the phone with 8GB of RAM, up from 6GB in previous generations. so expect the specs of the iPhone 16 Pro Max to continue this trend, supporting the presumed successor to the latest Apple-made A17 Pro chipset, which debuted in the 15 Pro Max, possibly the A18 Pro SoC.

In fact, there's now a leak that specifically mentions the A18 Pro with 8GB of RAM with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.

The same source also claimed that the phones will support Wi-Fi 7 and come with a new 5G modem, allowing for higher data speeds than current models.

Three months after the initial claim, the source said again that the iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to come with 8GB of RAM and a new 5G modem. The latter will not only allow for faster 5G, but will also improve energy efficiency and thus battery life. If that's the case, then it could be bad news for the iPhone 16 Pro Max as the 8GB RAM could also limit the AI capabilities of the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

On the storage front, a source said that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a maximum storage capacity of 2TB instead of the current 1TB. this is apparently due to the use of a different type of storage, which takes up less space and is cheaper to produce, but has slower write speeds.

Speaking of batteries, one source claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 4,676mAh battery, up from the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 4,441mAh. We've heard the iPhone 16 Pro Max's battery capacity mentioned several times by now, while another source was less specific, saying that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a larger battery than the current model, and it will be the longest-lasting iPhone battery yet.

We've also heard elsewhere that Apple may use a higher energy density battery for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which could mean it has a larger capacity or that Apple will shrink the size without reducing the capacity.

In terms of charging, the iPhone 16 Pro Max may support 40W wired charging and 20W wireless charging, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max is about 27W and 15W respectively.

Apple is expected to include a number of AI features in the iPhone 16 lineup, and one source says that at least some of them will be exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.

I've heard that the A18 Pro chipset that powers the iPhone 16 Pro Max may have more cores for the neural engine that handles AI tasks than the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The A18 Pro chipset may also have a larger chip area, which should make it more suitable for on-device AI.

However, the raw power of the A18 Pro may not be much, with sources claiming that the A18 Pro is only around 10% more powerful than the A17 Pro. Meanwhile, another leak suggests that the A18 Pro may not be as powerful as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 expected in rival Android phones.

The A18 Pro may also not support as fast RAM as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which could limit the iPhone 16 Pro Max's ability to perform the AI tasks on the phone.

We've also heard that the microphone in the iPhone 16 Pro Max (and the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup) may be improved, so we expect that the AI-enabled Siri upgrade later this year will be better able to hear you without removing ambient noise.
