Hello, hello! I am Yuan Hehe, please follow me, more exciting content is waiting for you Cameras
The best action cameras are rugged, waterproof, and capable of capturing amazing video and photos in places and situations that traditional cameras can’t. They’re small, wearable, easy to mount, and can capture first-person point-of-view (POV) video.
I’ve reviewed over 50 action cameras on the market and selected the top six. These are among the best action cameras for video, and with new releases every year, they’re getting even better. Buckle up, it’s time to get ready and share your unique photography and videography with our best action camera rankings.
The GoPro name has become synonymous with action cameras thanks to its iconic, groundbreaking GoPro Hero, but companies like DJI and Insta360, along with some that have rethought the look or function of action cameras, have challenged its dominance. DJI remains the best-selling action camera brand. This list represents the best and most impressive action cameras.
Best overall action camera: GoPro HERO13 Black
GoPro’s ubiquity in the action camera market is a double-edged sword—many people using generic knock-off action cameras call them GoPros, not really realizing the difference.
However, once you use a real GoPro camera, you’ll realize how remarkable they are. GoPro remains at the top of its field, offering an excellent action camera experience, diverse mounting options, excellent video quality, and the smoothest stabilization in the industry.

The GoPro HERO13 Black is the newest GoPro on the market, offering a more significant upgrade over the HERO11 than the previous HERO12. While maintaining the same larger sensor and 5.3K60p video recording as the HERO12, the GoPro HERO13 Black adds interesting and new improvements, such as new HB series lenses that are automatically detected by the camera, and some new ND filter accessories. There are ultra-wide-angle, macro, and anamorphic lenses, as well as a four-pack of ND filters that can be purchased separately.
GoPro finally adopted a magnetic mount for faster mounting, and improved thermal management and battery life, allowing for longer recording times in 4K60p mode, up to 1.5 hours, without overheating. There’s also Hybrid Log Gamma HDR video for more detail in highlights and shadows, and unlike the Hero 12, GPS has returned.

If you already own a HERO 12 or even a HERO 11, there’s no need to rush to upgrade to this model. However, if you’re shopping for your first action camera, the HERO 13 is the best option you can get—and while it’s more expensive than its competitors, the price difference isn’t that significant.
Best DJI Action Camera: DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
While it looks almost identical to its predecessor, the Osmo Action 5 Pro, on the outside, packs a number of exciting upgrades on the inside – enough to justify a new “Pro” suffix to its name.
Firstly, while the 1/1.3-inch sensor size remains the same and video resolution is still limited to 4K, still resolution has been greatly improved to 40MP. This makes images more detailed and allows for more room to crop.
Otherwise, there are plenty of general tweaks. Video resolution may be the same as the previous model, but the actual picture is noticeably better—brighter, sharper, and cleaner. The difference is crystal clear when shooting the HLG profile straight out of the camera. If you like to tweak your footage in grading, the Log profile is there for you.

It’s not the most exciting update, but the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is undoubtedly DJI’s best action camera yet and once again offers a convincing GoPro alternative. It’s tough, capable, lightweight, and just works.
Best mid-range DJI action camera: DJI Osmo Action 4
The DJI Osmo Action 4 is essentially identical in form factor to the DJI Osmo Action 3. This is great news for existing Action 3 owners, as they share the same battery, cage, mount, and other accessories, saving them a significant amount of money. The Osmo Action 4 also retains the popular magnetic quick-release design, allowing users to switch from regular shooting to the more social media-friendly portrait format.
Where it has improved is image quality. While the older Action 3 featured a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor, the new Action 4 has increased that to 1/1.3-inch – the same sensor used in the DJI Air 3 drone. The larger sensor means the pixel size has been bumped up to 2.4μm equivalent, which should result in better image quality – especially in low-light conditions.
Compared to the Action 3, 4K video can be shot at 120p at the same frame rate. This quality boost is good news for filmmakers incorporating action camera footage into their filmmaking. However, the Action 4 doesn’t achieve 5.7K like the GoPro Hero12 Black, which offers 5.7K at 60p.

For a super durable action camera with decent battery life, a wide range of resolutions and frame rates, and plenty of accessories to go with it, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is an excellent choice that won’t let you down.
Best budget GoPro action camera: GoPro HERO11 Black
New GoPro HERO camera releases typically include specific improvements rather than sweeping design updates, but previous versions have introduced features like the now-standard HyperSmooth stabilization that makes video footage super smooth even when the camera is moving.
For the HERO11 Black, the upgrade is the sensor. This version features a new 1/1.9-inch sensor that can shoot 5.3K video in a nearly square 8:7 ratio. This makes it easier to crop your videos into a vertical format and get TikTok-ready clips directly from the camera. But don’t worry—you can still use HyperView digital lenses to shoot beautiful, traditional 16:9 ratio videos.

Aside from a few other small but welcome upgrades, including Horizon Lock for stabilization and improved battery life, the GoPro HERO11 Black remains an excellent GoPro worth buying.
The best affordable DJI action camera: DJI Osmo Action 3
The Osmo Action 3 is a bit dated, but it has some compelling features. The biggest issue, however, is battery life. DJI has packed the Osmo Action 3 with a 1770mAh ultra-long battery, promising up to 160 minutes of battery life and the ability to operate in temperatures as low as -20°C. It also supports fast charging, reaching 80% in 18 minutes and 100% in 50 minutes.
Like GoPro, DJI has noticed that most users now watch videos in a 9:16 vertical format, so the Osmo Action 3 comes with a dedicated vertical recording mode and can be mounted vertically for easier use.

It doesn’t have the native resolution of GoPro’s latest Hero, with video resolution capped at 4K and still photo resolution at 12MP. Still, it’s significantly cheaper than the latest GoPro, even after a significant price cut. Along with the newer Osmo Action 4, it’s one of the most compelling alternatives.
Best 360-degree action camera: Insta360 X5
As the name suggests, Insta360 focuses on putting 360-degree imaging in the palm of your hand. The Insta360 X5 is a palm-sized action camera that’s waterproof to a depth of 10 meters, extendable to 50 meters with a “stealth submersible kit.”
The white version of the X5 features the same 1/1.28-inch image sensor and 8Kp30 360-degree video recording as the standard black X5. Insta360 calls it its “smartest, most rugged 360-degree camera ever,” and the X5 promises a significant improvement in imaging performance over its predecessor, the X4.
The X5 features a triple AI chip system, a 6mm (equivalent) f/2 lens, and a rugged IP68 rating. This rugged action camera is waterproof up to 15 meters without the optional invisible diving case, and its ruggedness further enhances its underwater performance, allowing it to submerge to a depth of 60 meters. The X5 also features a user-replaceable lens, ensuring footage remains clear even after outdoor adventures.
