You've decided to pick a new iPhone, but that decision isn't as simple as it used to be: While it was once a simple decision about storage capacity and color, there are now multiple iPhone models to choose from, each with their pros and cons.

iPhones come in all shapes and sizes, with multiple camera options and other unique features that make them stand out from the Android competition, and here I've ranked the best iPhones available for purchase today.

1. iPhone 14 Pro - the best overall

iPhone 14 Pro is the best iPhone yet for most people. it's a major improvement over iPhone 13 Pro not only in terms of raw performance but also in terms of new features. iPhone 14 Pro features key new technologies, including Apple's new Dynamic Island camera cutout.

The oval cutout replaces the standard Face ID notch and is an impressive blend of software and hardware that brings the notch into the iOS experience, showing timers, music controls and more without the need to access the lock screen. It's fascinating and a real highlight of Apple's keen eye for software and hardware design.

But that's not all; it's also the first iPhone to offer an always-on display, and in true Apple form, it's much better than its Android competitors. And while it dims the display, you'll still have full access to your wallpaper, time, widgets, notifications, and music controls without any real impact on overall battery life.

The 48Mp rear lens is another highlight of this year's Pro models; using 4-in-1 pixel merging technology, the new primary camera offers an impressive boost to not only overall detail but also low-light photography. This is a trend for all cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro, which Apple claims is a 2x improvement overall.

The only real disappointment is the battery life. While it will continue to run if it's on standby, you'll probably only be able to squeeze about a day's use out of the phone before it needs a recharge - which is a far cry from the big-screen iPhone 13 Pro Max and (probably) iPhone 14 Plus and Pro Max.

2. iPhone 14 - best for most people

iPhone 14 replaces iPhone 13 in Apple's lineup and, like its predecessor, is the default iPhone choice for most people. Despite lacking the 48Mp snapper of the Pro model, it has a very good camera, great battery life that lasts comfortably all day, and a great 60Hz display.

It's just the right size to use the phone comfortably without the bulkiness of the iPhone Plus and Max models. That's thanks to the use of an aluminum frame instead of the stainless steel of the Pro models, but the aluminum sides of iPhone 14 feel great, and they don't get greasy fingerprints like the Pro models do.

Add to that other features including full waterproofing, wireless charging, satellite connectivity, and crash detection, and you have a rugged iPhone that will last four to five years.

However, the upgrade isn't enough for iPhone 13 users, and for the price, it should have a high refresh rate display and the ability to shoot in RAW format.

This allows people to use the camera as a professional tool - which was possible on iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 14 share the same camera and chipset.

3. iPhone 14 Pro Max - the best big screen experience

iPhone 14 Pro Max is undoubtedly the best showcase of Apple's smartphone technology in 2023 - but it's also very expensive. It gives you a top iPhone experience with Apple's new Dynamic Island technology, a game-changing always-on display, and the fastest processor on the market, the A16 Bionic. There's also the same upgraded rear camera setup as the iPhone 14 Pro, including a dramatically upgraded 48Mp master snapper.

Where iPhone 14 Pro Max really stands out is the screen. 6.7-inch Ultra Retina XDR display is simply stunning. It's bright, vibrant and has plenty of screen real estate to really enjoy watching video content like TikToks and Netflix shows.

It also benefits from a larger battery than the iPhone 14 Pro for true all-day battery life without battery anxiety - even though it's no longer the iPhone with the best battery life. that award now goes to the iPhone 14 Plus, as shown below.

The stainless steel frame does add a premium look and feel to the phone, but it also adds extra weight as a result. It's also a bit like a fingerprint magnet.

If you just want a big-screen iPhone, the slightly less expensive iPhone 14 Plus might be enough, but if you want the ultimate iPhone experience, then iPhone 14 Pro Max is the way to go.

4. iPhone 13 Pro Max - still very powerful

If you want the big-screen iPhone experience but can't afford the high-end iPhone 14 Pro Max, last year's iPhone 13 Pro Max is still a great option, and better yet, it's much cheaper now than it was at launch.

Despite the reduced price, it has a huge 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display capable of jumping between 10 and 120Hz depending on what you're doing. It also has Apple's (not very high-end) A15 bionic chip at its core, although the RAM may have been increased compared to other models.

With the same sensor-shift OIS and wider f/1.5 aperture as the 12Mp prime lens, the 13 Pro Max is capable of taking great photos in both day and night. It also benefits from improvements to the ultra-wide angle and telephoto lenses, and professional-level videographers can use Apple ProRaw video recording.

Where the iPhone 13 Pro Max really shines is in the battery place; it offers an extra 2 hours compared to the already impressive 12 Pro Max, keeping up with some of the best Android competition - although the title of best battery life now belongs to the iPhone 14 Plus which is shown below.

The downside is that the larger display and battery mean the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a bit of a beast to hold in one hand, and it's also noticeably heavier.

5. iPhone 14 Plus - Best battery life

If you're looking for the longest battery life of any iPhone, look no further than iPhone 14 Plus, which in most cases outlasts even the high-end iPhone 14 Pro Max. But unlike the other iPhones in the iPhone 14 lineup, this isn't an easy recommendation.

It has a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display, traditionally you have to experience the high-end iPhone Pro Max, it has a long battery life, and it has the still very powerful Apple A15 bionic at its core. Using the same primary lens as the iPhone 13 Pro, offering decent camera performance, a solid iOS experience, and great build quality, on the surface it seems like the ideal iPhone.

The problem is its price, which is just $6,999. That's not much cheaper than the iPhone 14 Pro, which comes with a ton of upgrades on the Plus, including a 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, Apple's Dynamic Island technology, an upgraded 48Mp rear camera, and more premium materials.

It's also very expensive compared to its Android competition, especially since the 60Hz refresh rate really holds the iPhone 14 Plus back.

So while iPhone 14 Pro performs well and has the best battery life ever on iPhone, it's hard to argue that it's good value for money.

6. Apple iPhone 13 Pro - the best of last year

If iPhone 14 Pro is a little too expensive for your needs, why not consider last year's iPhone 13 Pro. It makes key improvements to iPhone 12 Pro in terms of performance, battery, and camera, and it's no different than 13 Pro Max except for screen size, which means you don't have to spend the money on the biggest iPhone to get the best features.

One of the key features of iPhone 13 Pro is the 120Hz ProMotion display. The adaptive refresh rate ramps up to a smooth 120Hz when scrolling and playing games, and drops to as low as 10Hz when battery life can be saved. the display is also brighter than ever, making it ideal for outdoor use.

While it lacks the camera upgrades of the iPhone 14 Pro, the 13 Pro is still a powerful photo snapper. It comes with a major 12Mp snapper that features the sensor-shifting OIS technology previously reserved for the 12 Pro Max, as well as an improved f/1.5 aperture for better low-light photography. The wide-angle camera has similar low-light improvements and can double as a macro camera, and the enhanced telephoto lens now offers a 3x optical zoom.

Like the rest of the iPhone 13 lineup, you'll find the A15 bionic with at least 128GB of base storage and up to 1TB.

Performance is also top-notch, and the difference between it and the upgraded A16 Bionic in this year's Pro models is minimal. Indeed, there's not much to like about the iPhone 13 Pro, and it's cheaper than it's ever been since the iPhone 14 Pro was released.

7. iPhone 13 - still a strong contender

Although it has been replaced by iPhone 14, iPhone 13 is still a good choice for those who want to save some money on a recent iPhone.

It has the same overall form factor as the updated iPhone 14 and is powered by the same A15 Bionic chipset with similar levels of performance.

Camera performance is also excellent, with Sensor-Shift OIS, which was previously exclusive to the high-end iPhone 12 Pro Max, although it doesn't get autofocus technology on the front camera like the newer models. Battery life has also been increased by 2 hours compared to its predecessor.

But while the overall experience remains strong, iPhone 13 is lacking in some areas. It caps out at 60Hz, down from 120Hz on the Pro model, and while you'll get an ultra-wide camera with macro photography, you won't find a telephoto lens for close-up portraits. There's also a slower maximum charge rate to consider.

If you're not too concerned about having the best of everything, the iPhone 13 is still a much more attractive smartphone for the price.

8. iPhone 13 mini - the best small-screen iPhone

If the 6.1-inch display on iPhone 13 is a little too big for you, then iPhone 13 mini is the right iPhone for you.

It offers the same iPhone experience as the standard model, with the A15 bionic at its core, Apple's Super Retina XDR display (albeit only 5.4 inches) and an improved primary lens and ultra wide-angle lens with sensor-shifted OIS like the more advanced models , but in a much smaller form factor.

iPhone 13 mini is the perfect iPhone for one-handed use, but the smaller display also means it's not great for watching videos and movies.

The small size means that while battery life has improved compared to the 12 Mini, it can't compete with larger models overall. It still suffers from the same 12W MagSafe charging cap compared to the 15W of the rest of the range.

9. iPhone SE (2022) - The most affordable iPhone

Apple's iPhone SE line is dedicated to function over form, putting raw performance ahead of design or aesthetics, and the latest model does the same - but probably to its detriment.

With the same A15 bionic chipset and 5G connectivity as the iPhone 13 series, iPhone SE outperforms all Android competitors in its price range, and 5G connectivity is a welcome addition, but that performance comes at a price.

The iPhone SE's outdated design feels older than ever, with a 720p LCD display that not only looks small, but is increasingly unable to render apps and web pages designed for larger mobile displays.

There's also a 12Mp main lens at the rear. It can take good pictures in good or even low light, but it lacks advanced shooting modes like night mode and movie video mode, despite its powerful chipset.

iPhone SE is really only for people who have to have an iPhone but can't afford an iPhone 13 Mini or can't say goodbye to Touch ID. For almost everyone else, there's a better iPhone available.
