Apple iPhone 14 Pro

At first glance, nothing has changed with the latest iPhone. Upon closer inspection, it's changed one: the bangs notch. It's now a pill-shaped notch called Dynamic Island, and the UI adjusts around it to show app-specific shortcuts. Unless an app doesn't support it, it's still a black pill notch.

Otherwise, the iPhone 14 Pro is an evolutionary iteration. You still get the wide-angle, super-wide-angle, and telephoto camera trio, but the rear flash is brighter, the macro zoom has been bumped to 2x optical, and the main sensor has jumped to 48 MP.

Photos feel detailed and vivid, while low-light shots are now better. Up front, selfies are sharper, while the vivid 6.1-inch display is brighter at 2,000 nits. It can also be set to always-on, showing a dimmer version of the lock screen.

As a whole, the iPhone 14 Pro is brilliant. With the A16 bionic chip, everything is fearless. Add an industry-leading display and an impressive camera makeover, and you have a top-of-the-line smartphone. But if you're upgrading from the iPhone 13 Pro, you might want to wait another generation.

Performance was surprisingly good, and battery life proved very frugal throughout my testing. When the 5000mAh battery was drained, the 80W SuperVooc charging filled it up in just over half an hour.

OPPO Find X5 Pro

If you don't mind photographing your subject from a distance, the Oppo Find X5 Pro can challenge the coveted point-and-shoot. From its powerful 6.7-inch screen to its robust internal hardware, it does a lot to justify the big numbers on its ticket.

The top-spec Snapdragon chip delivers serious power, paired with a blisteringly fast 80W wired charging speed. While it may be a fingerprint magnet, the way the ceramic casing seamlessly curves around the camera housing is a work of art.

In all respects but one, the camera performs equally well. Whether you're shooting in daylight or after dark, the main and ultra-wide snapshotters capture bright, detailed and balanced results.

The MariSilicon X neural processing chip can also be enhanced with machine learning. Only one specification stands in the way of its perfection: the meager 2x optical zoom offered by the telephoto. This is a five-star smartphone.

Apple iPhone 13 mini

Battery life is one of the few tradeoffs, though it still outperformed the standard iPhone 12 in tests. iPhone 13 Mini solidifies its position as the top smartphone for a smaller percentage of the market at a lower price.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

Samsung's top-spec foldable phone sets the benchmark for folding smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is sturdy and stylish, as you'd expect for the price, and when folded it's heavier than a regular phone but easier to maneuver than its predecessor.

The creases in the main display are less noticeable than in previous Z Fold phones, and the desktop productivity features make multitasking a breeze.It helps that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor is very flexible.

Top-notch shooting skills are also inherited from the Samsung Galaxy S22. The main sensor produces consistently detailed still images in almost any scene, while the telephoto snapshotter zooms with impressive sharpness.

With color OLED technology and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, the outer panel is as good as you'll find on any flagship phone.

However, it's the smaller of the two: the 7.6-inch screen inside is bright, smooth and vibrant, offering big space for doodling with the S Pen. We just wish we had somewhere to store the stylus.
