Hello, how are you? I am the original huh, click on the attention, more exciting content waiting for you!
There's a new story on the web now, and that's that the more credible analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that only one iPhone 16 model can be upgraded with a telephoto camera, and that the so-called iPhone 15 Ultra will only be able to come with a periscope camera in Apple's next wave of flagship phone releases.
That's according to relatively reliable analysts who say that only the iPhone 15 Ultra or iPhone 15 Pro Max gets the much-improved telephoto camera, while something like the regular iPhone 15 Pro falls behind.
Relatively reliable analysts believe this trend will continue until 2024, with only the top-end iPhone 16 coming with a periscope camera.
iPhone 15 Ultra: Why the Periscope Camera Matters
First, let's understand what a periscope camera is. By using a prismatic system, where the image sensor and zoom lens array are located on the side, the focal length of the camera can be increased to provide a greater optical zoom range; phones such as the Oppo Find X2 Pro use it to provide an excellent 5x telephoto camera.
Apple's iPhone 14 Pro Max currently has the highest 3x optical zoom on its telephoto camera, trailing behind the longer zoom ranges of the Huawei Mate 50 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which come with 3x and 10x optical zoom telephoto cameras. Thus, by adopting a periscope camera system, the iPhone 15 Ultra/Pro Max can fight back against its smartphone competitors.
But if the periscope camera is limited to the top-end iPhone 15 model, it will force keen zoom-photographers to splash out on the most expensive iPhones for what seems like the second year in a row.
Relatively reliable analysts believe that the market's lack of interest in lens upgrades will be the reason why other iPhone 15/16 models don't come with a periscope lens.
Considering how good the iPhone 13 Pro is at photography, one might get tired of the small improvements that new lenses or sensor upgrades bring to the smartphone world.
I'm not surprised especially when any of the best camera phones can deliver photos. Pretty much works for pretty much everything except being enlarged to canvas size or for professional use.
For Apple, it makes sense to limit the adoption of periscope cameras. A periscope camera is more complex than a standard telephoto camera, so if it were to be used on all next-generation iPhone models, it would likely increase Apple's production price.
Analysis: The Shocking Divide
At the same time, for people like me who prefer the regular Pro iPhone in the 6.1-inch size, being forced to buy a larger model for the zoom upgrade can feel bad, especially since there's little downside to being a base iPhone Pro.
Instead, adding a periscope lens to the iPhone 15 Pro as well as the Max and Ultra models could pave the way for more people to use this zoom feature and give Apple more room to tweak its computational photography algorithms to take advantage of the increased zoom range. This could provide potential users with a greater overall camera system upgrade.
Even though this rumor from relatively reliable analysts is more believable, and only one iPhone 15 comes with a periscope camera, there are still some exciting upgrades.
I can expect a chip upgrade for the iPhone 15 lineup, Dynamic Island on all models, a possible curved design, and the eventual arrival of USB-C for charging and data transfer.
In fact, I've decided to wait for the iPhone 15 because my iPhone 13 Pro is good enough, and I think we could see major changes to Apple's mobile hardware with the iPhone 15 in the second half of the year.
