Apple's next flagship phone looks set to be the iPhone 15 Pro Max, as the so-called iPhone Ultra could be delayed until 2016. As the largest and most versatile phone in the iPhone lineup, the iPhone 15 Pro Max could cause a stir in our list of best phones and set a new standard for smartphones.

While I don't expect much difference from the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple could double down and improve Dynamic Island with all the rumored upgrades that could make for a very impressive phone. We could see a powerful new A17 bionic chip, a periscopic zoom camera, a titanium design and other enhancements. So read on for all the rumors about the iPhone 15 Pro Max so far.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: Release Date

As night falls, we can expect to see Apple launch the iPhone 15 series in the fall, with September as the likely release month.

And the iPhone 15 Pro Max could be the leader of the family, positioned to fend off competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Huawei P60 Pro.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Price

There aren't a ton of rumors about the iPhone 15 Pro Max price, but we suspect it will be similar to the iPhone 14 Pro series. So that means the base 128GB model starts at $8,999 and the 1TB version starts at $12,999.

An early rumor claims that the price of the iPhone 15 Pro will go up by $1,000. But that may just be to keep the price hike in line for iPhone 14 models worldwide. Analysts are the latest to predict a price increase for the iPhone 15 Pro, citing rumors that Apple is making improvements to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In any case, the iPhone 15 Pro Max won't be cheap. But as an uncompromising flagship phone, that's to be expected.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Design and Display

It's unlikely that Apple will change the overall design of iPhone 15 Pro Max or the entire Pro lineup. Lingering Island will almost certainly remain, perhaps with some tweaks and improved functionality and third-party app support; especially since it's expected to be available on all iPhone 15 models.

The display size is expected to remain at 6.7 inches with an LTPO OLED display that supports a 120Hz refresh rate. apple may make some tweaks to improve the brightness and color of the iPhone 15 Pro Max screen and may reduce the bezel to the smallest bezel of any smartphone around.

A bigger change can be found on the edges of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. There are rumors that the iPhone 15 will move away from flat edges and return to curved surfaces. The idea here is that the larger iPhone will be more comfortable to hold.

The rumor is made even more significant by allegedly leaked images of the iPhone 15 series front glass panel that show how the sides of the screen are gently curved.

And the body of the iPhone 15 Pro Max could be made of titanium. This could result in a stronger but lighter iPhone Pro Max, which we think would be an excellent upgrade and, at least in our experience, get rid of the shatter-prone stainless steel edges.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is also expected to come with solid-state buttons with haptic feedback, rather than moving parts. A new rumor adds further to this claim, claiming that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will use a solid-state button that combines two volume buttons into a rocker that doesn't move but uses haptics to convey physical feedback. Such a button would reduce the risk of exposure to dust and liquids inside the iPhone 15 Pro Max and make the flagship more durable overall.

Thanks to the virtual units of all four expected models, we have now seen these designs in 3D. They are not so different in appearance from the iPhone 14 series, but they are still different enough to require new cases.

We haven't heard many rumors about iPhone 15 colors, but we could reportedly see a deep red option for the iPhone 15 Pro line.

iPhone 15 Pro Max USB-C

Rumors of USB-C connectivity replacing the Lightning port seem likely on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, as the European Union requires phones to adopt USB-C as the universal charging standard by December 2024; Apple will likely lead the way with the iPhone 15 series.

Going USB-C definitely helps with charging and simplifies connectivity. But without a converter and dongle, it can make connecting to older iPhone accessors a little awkward; that's the price of change.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Camera

Expect the iPhone 15 Pro Max to stick with the same triple rear camera as the iPhone 14 Pro Max; a major ultra-wide angle and telephoto snapper suite. That's fine with us, because the iPhone 14 Pro Max is one of our top picks for the best camera phone.

But expect improvements in sensors and software; after all, Apple has been hinted to use the new Sony "state-of-the-art" sensor for the iPhone 15.

One major upgrade could be a periscope telephoto lens for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which Apple analysts say will use a range of optics to expand the camera's zoom range without relying on crop or digital zoom. A 6x optical zoom could be in the lens set. The periscope camera appeared in phones a few years ago, but has since declined slightly. So this would be a clever upgrade for the next-generation iPhone Pro Max.

Another rumor says the iPhone 15 Pro will have an 8P prime lens to reduce distortion when shooting wide open. But considering Apple just switched to a 7P lens for the iPhone 14 Pro, I'm a little skeptical.

A new announcement suggests that iPhone 15 Pro models could come with an upgraded LiDAR sensor for higher performance and better energy efficiency. This could not only extend iPhone's battery life, but also allow for better portrait photos with improved depth sensing and enhanced augmented reality apps that could benefit from a better room scanning sensor.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Specifications and A17 Bionic Chip

Like many of the Pro iPhones before it, the iPhone 15 Pro Max looks like it will feature a new A-series chip, possibly in the form of the A17 Bionic.

Expect more CPU and GPU power, as well as upgrades to machine learning and neural processing to better support smart features from computational photography to Siri. The new chip could be built on TSMC's 3nm process, which could theoretically provide it with more power and higher efficiency.

There are also rumors that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will come with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and an increase in memory. Given that the iPhone 14 Pro Max is far from slow, this extra performance may not be noticeable, but it could be a welcome boost.

iPhone 15 Pro Battery Life

There are no rumors about the battery life of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. But with the new 3nm chip, I expect it will be more energy efficient, even if it sticks with the 4,323 mAh battery.

iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted 13 hours and 39 minutes in my battery test, which included continuous Internet access until the battery ran out. That's good enough to be our best phone battery life. So we can expect the iPhone 15 Pro Max to be at that level or better.

I would still like to see a larger battery pack, especially if the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra uses a 5,000 mAh battery.

No word on fast charging. iPhone 14 Pro Max charges at 20 watts, which is good, but not as good as something like the Galaxy S23 Ultra and lags behind OnePlus 11 with its super-fast 100W charging speed. We're hoping Apple will find a way to make its next iPhone charge faster over USB-C.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Summary

Based on rumors and leaks, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is shaping up to be an impressive smartphone. It may not be a huge improvement over the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but many smaller changes could add up to make it one of the best phones to buy.

So it's almost certainly going to be the best iPhone you can buy in 2023. it has to be good, because the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra really impressed us and is arguably the phone to beat right now.
