Hello, how are you? I am the original huh, click on the attention, more exciting content waiting for you!
If I had asked you a few years ago which phone was the biggest Android competitor to the best Samsung phone, would you have chosen a Xiaomi phone? Well, neither would I! Xiaomi was known for its cheap phones back then, but it has made strides by leaps and bounds and if there is one company that can replace Huawei, it's Xiaomi.
Its latest Xiaomi 13 Pro flagship does come in at about the same price as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and it has a camera system that matches or even beats the Galaxy in some cases. it's also equipped with one of the most successful chips in recent memory, the speedy Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but Xiaomi squeezes a lot of juice out of it when it comes to power efficiency as well.
It's charging speed is a few laps of Samsung Galaxy's turtle-crawl charging speed. So has Samsung found a rival in 2023? Let's find out!
Design and display: Xiaomi is smaller, Samsung has a bigger screen
The Xiaomi definitely rivals the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra as far as quality of workmanship is concerned. Both feel very refined, firmly placed and well made all around.
While the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a glass front and back with an aluminum center frame, Xiaomi offers three different finishes, one is glass like the Galaxy, but you can also opt for a more durable ceramic back to scratches or even a faux-leather finish with a very pleasing texture.
Both phones have beautiful buttons and are IP68 rated for water and dust resistance.
However, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is definitely bigger and heavier and a bit out of the usual range even for a big phone, so keep that in mind, whereas the Xiaomi on the contrary feels less wide, easier to maneuver with one hand, and lighter.
There is also a noticeable difference in screen size and dimensions. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a 6.8-inch screen while the Xiaomi has a 6.7-inch display, but the 0.1-inch difference is misleading because the Samsung Galaxy is bigger.
Both seem to use the latest Samsung OLED panel technology, which is great news as it means you get very vivid colors, little to no discoloration at angles as well as incredible maximum brightness, which makes these phones much easier to use outdoors. You can even see that Xiaomi actually scores slightly higher on maximum brightness, which is really interesting.
In terms of biometrics, both rely on a fingerprint scanner under the screen, but the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra uses an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner while Xiaomi uses an optical-style sensor. Both do the job equally well, so there's nothing to complain about here.
Performance: the same chip means almost the same performance
Both phones are equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and even though the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra labels its version as a special model, the actual difference in performance is negligible.
If you're wondering why that's the case, well, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra version has a slightly higher frequency Snapdragon processor, which gives it a very small advantage in certain use cases.
In terms of RAM and storage, the base model of the Samsung Galaxy has 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage while the Xiaomi has the same storage as the base model but with 12GB of RAM.You can also get 12GB of RAM on the Galaxy but you will have to spend more money on the 512GB storage version to get the RAM upgrade.
Camera: 1-inch sensor on Xiaomi collides with 200 MP Samsung camera
The biggest promise of the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro is, of course, the camera: you've got a 1-inch main camera sensor that's bigger than the one you've got on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which should theoretically perform better at night, and you've got a 3.2x zoom with some superpowers.
On sunny days, you can see that Xiaomi tends to go for darker exposures, while the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra takes brighter photos. If you ask us, the ideal photo should be somewhere in the middle, but we prefer the brighter exposure of the Samsung Galaxy.
None of these phones are ideal when it comes to nighttime shots, but the slightly dull look of the Xiaomi is actually a bit surprising, and we think the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has the upper hand.
But Xiaomi has made a huge leap in quality. Both phones look very, very good at night; they're both beautiful and bright.
But if you look closely, you'll notice a bit more noise on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and it tends to have some very obvious artificial processing at times.
Audio Quality and Haptics
While the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro technically has dual speakers, one bottom-firing and the other embedded in the earpiece, just like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, the sound quality is unmatched.
The Xiaomi is much quieter and sorely lacks any bass tones, so while the sound sounds clear, other issues are really noticeable, and the speaker quality is one of the least impressive we've heard on a flagship phone in 2023. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a big step up from the Xiaomi.
The haptic feedback is nice and tight at least on the Xiaomi, and we actually prefer it to the less refined vibration motor on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Battery life and charging: both last longer than regular phones
In terms of battery size, the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro has a 4,820 mAh battery while the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a nearly 4% larger battery at 5,000 mAh so you might think that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra would be good and win the battery round.
Well, not that easy, because those software tricks that kill background apps on Xiaomi translate into longer battery life than you'd expect.
As you can see, these phones are neck and neck in battery life, web browsing scores are almost identical, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra beats the Xiaomi in 3D games while the Xiaomi actually has a very big advantage in video playback time.
In real life, both phones can easily last longer - expect to get about a day and a half of use on average if you use them moderately, or even longer if you barely use your phone at all.
When it comes to charging, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with its 45W "fast charger" is a D-League player compared to the all-star Xiaomi with its 120W fast charger.
It's a huge difference, with the Xiaomi fully charging in less than 30 minutes, while the Samsung Galaxy takes over an hour.
Both phones also support wireless charging and the Xiaomi's 50W speed is much faster than the Samsung Galaxy's 10W. What's the difference!
Summary
The Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro is a great phone that excels in most of the basic areas that make up a great smartphone: the battery life is long, the camera is very good, and charging is super fast. Our biggest concern is the MIUI software, which still feels a little strange to use and kills background apps, which can affect your notifications. Xiaomi really needs to fix this.
On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a "safe choice" for an Android flagship, but that doesn't make it any less attractive. We're a little frustrated that Samsung has cut some corners with the 8GB RAM case, and gamers may be upset about the throttling, but in general, these aren't spoilers. And the S Pen is still a factor.
What would we choose between the two? I still think the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a bit more refined and a safer choice, but the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro certainly doesn't disappoint.
