Traditionally the best tablets were large-screen alternatives to smartphones. But as cell phone display sizes continue to grow, so do tablet screen sizes. This is a welcome trend for those who do a lot of work on tablets, including students or people who work remotely and want something thin and light but with a large screen.

So this begs the question - who else makes large display tablets? As it turns out, there are more options than you might think. Not all tablets are close to 15 inches in size, but current tablets have plenty of screen real estate. Our pick for the best large-display tablet is the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but we've also included options from Samsung, Microsoft, and others that are launching for the school season.

Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch 6th generation: the best large tablet overall

Apple's iPad Pro line is by far the most powerful and impressive line of iPads we've ever seen, which makes it our best overall choice.

It's also the most expensive in the long run. The exterior design hasn't changed much, but inside, you'll find that Apple's M2 processor is made up of 20 billion transistors - 25% more than the M1. It's the exact same processor Apple uses in the new 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

I spent some time with the 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro and found it to be faster and more powerful than any other iPad model I've tested so far. You can expect download speeds of up to 2.4Gbps, twice as fast as previous models, performance gains of up to 15%, and graphics performance gains of up to 35%.

The Pro also supports the second-generation Apple Pencil and offers a new hover feature thanks to the M2 chip. Here's how it works: Once the tip of the Apple Pencil is within 12 millimeters of the iPad Pro's display, parts of the interface in apps that support the new feature come to life.

The Smart Connector is located on the back of iPad Pro, giving you the option of using it with either the Myo Keyboard, which includes backlit keys and a trackpad, or Apple's Smart Keyboard.

And, while the differences between the 5th and 6th generation models are more subtle, the M2 chip is really the highlight here, making it a powerful tablet.

The iPad Pro, combined with iPadOS and the M2 chip, gives you the closest thing to a laptop without actually buying one.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra: The Best Big Samsung Tablets

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is overall the tablet with the largest display on our ranking. With a 14.6-inch display, the Tab S9 Ultra ensures you'll have plenty of room for work and play.

Included in the box is Samsung's S Pen stylus, which can be used to draw ideas or write notes, or you can use it to navigate the tablet's Android 13 interface, or even write in any text field and automatically convert it to digital text.

Upgrades to this tablet over last year's model include an improved Dynamic AMOLED display, IP68 water and dust resistance, a better S Pen experience, and more.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, which is not certified for the iPad or any high-end tablet on the market.

While I wouldn't recommend testing the waterproof limits, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is dustproof and not only splashproof, but can also be submerged in water up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes.

Microsoft Surface Pro 8: The best large tablet ever made

Microsoft's Surface line pioneered the 2-in-1 detachable computer market, so I'd be remiss if I didn't include it on this list.

After all, it is sold as a standalone tablet. Microsoft redesigned the Surface Pro 8, shrinking the bezels around the 13-inch display and giving it the same basic design as the Surface Pro X.

With Surface Pro 8, you get a tablet running Windows 11 out of the box, not a mobile OS like Android or iPadOS. That means you don't have to worry about finding apps or solutions for your workflow.

I was also introduced to the Microsft Surface Pro and (almost) converted to a Windows user. What particularly impressed me was the addition of Thunderbolt 4 support. The ability to connect the tablet to an external display and have it work as intended has greatly increased my productivity.

Of course, if you want to use your Surface Pro 8 as a laptop, you'll need to purchase the Surface Pro Signature Edition Keyboard. Or, you can opt for a combo that includes the keyboard and Microsoft's Slim Pen 2 stylus. The keyboard itself even has a handy compartment for storing the pen and charging it at the same time.

Microsoft Surface Pro X: The best large tablet for busy people

I've included the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 in this list, but the Microsoft Surface Pro X also deserves a separate mention. The Pro 8 and Pro X share the same design as well as keyboard and stylus support.

The Microsoft Surface Pro X is unusual in that it's powered by Microsoft's ARM-based SQ1 or SQ2 processor. That's the same processor architecture used in the Apple Silicon chips that Apple currently uses in the iPad Pro and several Macs.

The benefits of moving to an ARM processor come in the form of battery life, as well as increased LTE connectivity (at least as far as the Pro X is concerned). However, there are some downsides.

One of them is that apps need to be rebuilt to support ARM processors, rather than the tried-and-true Intel or AMD processors that Microsoft uses in the rest of its Surface products.

I've been using the Microsoft Surface Pro X since it first launched, and while the app compatibility issues have been greatly improved, I still have some work to do before I can't tell the difference between updated apps and non-updated apps. There isn't.

To summarize, the Microsoft Surface Pro X is worth considering if you like to live on the cutting edge of technology and want a tablet with LTE connectivity so you can work from anywhere.
