Hello, how are you? I am the original huh, click on the attention, more exciting content waiting for you!
Over the past few years, Apple's AirPods line has grown from one to four models. Currently, you have the option to buy the second-generation AirPods with USB-C, the third-generation AirPods, the second-generation AirPods Pro, and the AirPods Max headphones.
Let's set that last option aside for now. If you're willing to spend over a thousand or two thousand on a pair of headphones, you'll need to decide between several relatively similar headphones.
This is a different option than wanting truly wireless headphones. Here are three relatively similar looking Apple headphones to choose from. So which one is right for you?
AirPods and AirPods Pro design
The most notable difference between the three headphone models is their design. The second-generation AirPods retain the original design, featuring long white handles and earbuds similar to the wired earbuds that come with the iPhone, only without the wires.
The relatively new third-generation AirPods feature shorter stems and more bulbous, rounded earphones. Despite the shorter stem, the headphones weigh very similar to the older AirPods. The charging case looks very similar to the AirPods Pro - shorter and wider.
The AirPods Pro features a short stem design and rubberized earbuds to provide a better seal, isolate noise and improve sound quality. Whichever AirPods you choose, you're stuck with the classic glossy white color.
AirPods and AirPods Pro Noise Cancellation
That's what makes AirPods Pro stand out, and the unique feature that's most likely to make you choose them over the third-generation AirPods.
Not only do the rubber earbuds help block out more external noise, but the active noise cancellation feature gives you a truly private listening space. It's also worth noting that only AirPods Pro supports Conversation Enhancement Assist.
AirPods and AirPods Pro Spatial Audio and Sound Quality
All AirPods support Dolby Atmos spatial audio in Apple Music. In fact, you can force this feature to be enabled for any pair of headphones. However, second-generation AirPods do not support experiencing video spatial audio and head tracking on TVs and other supported apps. To experience these features, you'll need to choose third-generation or AirPods Pro.
The third-generation AirPods also outperform the second-generation when it comes to sound quality. Apple has adopted a new low-distortion driver design that is claimed to deliver superior sound quality, as well as support for an adaptive equalizer, similar to the AirPods Pro.
Even without active noise cancellation, the sound quality of AirPods Pro is a significant improvement over regular AirPods. Sound quality is significantly improved compared to the first-generation AirPods Pro.
AirPods and AirPods Pro Features and Controls
Operating AirPods can be controlled by tapping on the second-generation AirPods, while the third-generation AirPods and AirPods Pro feature a small, pressure-sensitive cutout area on the stem.
By squeezing the handle, you can play/pause, fast-forward, rewind, or summon Siri, and AirPods Pro also allows you to adjust the volume by sliding the bar up or down (a new feature on the second-generation models). All AirPods models support hands-free control via "Hey Siri.
Water and sweat resistant, both the AirPods Pro and third-generation AirPods have this feature, making them more suitable for sports, although it's not recommended to take them into the pool. The second-generation AirPods, on the other hand, are not waterproof.
The third-generation AirPods support the expanded Find My feature, which can be used to track lost earbuds and set up detachment alerts. Since the release of the second-generation AirPods Pro, they have also featured a speaker on the charging case.
They emit a loud tone when you use the Find Me feature and have a U1 chip so you can direct to them. Third-generation AirPods and AirPods Pro also support announcement notifications, so Siri dictates important messages and alerts as they arrive.
Battery life for AirPods and AirPods Pro
Second-generation AirPods offer up to 5 hours of battery life, and you can use the charging case for about four recharges for a total of 24 hours of listening time.
The third-generation AirPods and AirPods Pro extend listening time to six hours, while the charging case provides four additional charges for a total of 30 hours of listening time. For AirPods Pro, turning off active noise cancellation adds about an hour of additional listening time.
AirPods and AirPods Pro wireless charging
Apple currently only offers a wired charging case for the second-generation AirPods, but you can purchase a charging case with wireless charging separately. The third-generation AirPods offer a more affordable option, with one version that doesn't include wireless charging, but instead comes with a case that charges through the Lightning connector.
MagSafe-equipped third-generation AirPods and AirPods Pro come with a wireless charging case that makes it easy to charge on any Qi wireless charger or Apple MagSafe wireless charger.
You can also charge the third-generation AirPods charging case using the Lightning cable, while charging the AirPods Pro via USB-C (older models use the Lightning connector).
Additionally, you can charge your AirPods Pro using the Apple Watch charger or, if you have an iPhone 15 series phone, by plugging the charging cable into the USB-C port on your iPhone.
Summary
Apple has introduced three AirPods models each with their own unique features. If you're not interested in wireless charging, the second-generation AirPods are a good choice. While they don't have the same sound quality or longevity as the third-generation AirPods, they're a good option for the money.
For those who value wireless charging, the third-generation AirPods are highly recommended; in fact, buying the second-generation AirPods with a charging case can be more expensive than buying the third-generation AirPods outright.
AirPods Pro have been updated to second-generation models and upgraded again. Despite their higher price compared to standard AirPods, they offer superior sound quality and unique features like active noise cancellation, adaptive transparency, and conversation enhancement.
All things considered, I think the third generation AirPods are the most cost-effective option for most people. From a technical standpoint, they're more affordable than the second-generation AirPods (which come with a wireless charging case) and have more new features. They have longer battery life and better sound quality compared to older models.
The second-generation AirPods Pro is significantly more advanced, but it costs extra. If noise cancellation is important to you, the extra cost is worth it.
