As the end of the year approaches, anticipation is growing for the upcoming new generation of flagship smartphones from Samsung and Apple.
The two giant companies are mulling over their respective powerhouses, Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy S24 series while Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 16 series with the possibility of introducing the new iPhone Ultra. Now, let's follow the rumors of these two series of phones together.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra appears in new renders
With the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, we have seen some striking design changes that are refreshingly new compared to its predecessor. Samsung's flagship smartphone, which had been sporting a curved display, has opted for a flat display this time around, presenting users with an unusual look.
The upcoming 2024 Galaxy S24 Ultra maintains the same 6.8-inch screen size as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but is wider and shorter in profile. While the differences are tiny - 1.1 millimeters shorter and 0.9 millimeters wider - the tweaks are enough to make a significant cosmetic difference when placing the two phones side-by-side.
The innovation in design doesn't stop there. The new phone features symmetrical bezels, which fulfills a long-standing fan expectation. The chin is no longer thicker than the side and top bezels, presenting a more unified look.
Additionally, the front-facing camera's perforation has been further reduced in size and positioned more downward than before. All of these design tweaks are presented in a set of leaked renders of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. These renders were created by reputable sources based on available data including dimensions, display aspect ratio and bezel width.
As the image shows, the back design of the phone remains largely the same, with the three cameras aligned vertically and the laser sensor, LED flash, and fourth camera situated next to them. The front and back panels are slightly curved at the edges where they meet the titanium frame, but the screen itself presents a flat design.
Rear camera setup will change internally
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra's rear camera setup may look similar to the Galaxy S23 Ultra on the outside, but internally it has undergone some important changes. The most notable of these is Samsung's decision to go with a 50 MP 5x zoom lens instead of the previous 10 MP 10x optical zoom camera.
The 10x zoom lens has a slightly improved sensor and the 200 MP main camera has been optimized. However, the 12 MP ultra-wide angle lens does not seem to have changed. This series of camera tweaks provide users with an even better photography experience.
Rumor: iPhone 16 still uses the old 60Hz screen
Despite this year's iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus featuring Dynamic Island displays, it's clear that Apple has failed to boost the refresh rate on both standard models, continuing with the 60 Hz panel design.
There have been multiple reports suggesting that Apple may improve the panel on the 2024 iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, but the move seems somewhat inconsequential compared to the latest rumors.
Apple iPhone 16 (Plus) may disappoint
According to claims by a South Korean analyst, who cites rumors in the supply chain, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will continue to retain the size and layout of their predecessors. The analyst details how these displays will continue to utilize the old OLED LTPS screen with a 60 Hz refresh rate.
If these rumors are true, it means that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus won't have the ProMotion feature, which offers a smoother scrolling experience and an always-on display mode similar to the Pro model with a 120 Hz refresh rate.
It's worth noting that this will be the first time the regular iPhone 16 will be considered to come with an outdated 60 Hz panel. Nevertheless, it's still too early for us to jump to conclusions.
The leaker also confirms earlier reports that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have slightly larger displays at 6.27 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. Previous reports have mentioned these changes, including the size of the two high-end iPhones.
The Ultra branding of the Pro Max is also mentioned. However, there is no confirmation as to whether this will be the final name of the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
